  1. I am returning to Penang next week to renew my non-imm 'O' visa. Last year I got a multi-entry, 12 months visa. This time I'm told if I want the same I need a letter from the British embassy. I'm a single, retired 61 yo. Anyone throw any light on what this letter's all about.

As I'm travelling from Chiang Mai, will I be able to pick it up from the Consulate there?

    Many thanks,

I live in Chiang Mai and it is fairly straight forward to get a retirement visa, assuming you already have a multipule entry visa. You need, photo, letter from hospital saying you are healthy. You can get this from Rama11 for 60baht, takes ten minutes. Then arrange with you bank to provide a letter showing you have adequate funds (800,00baht), this needs to be done on the day of the visa application. Photo copy all the documents, all pages of your bank passbook. I found Ching Mai immigration very helpful. They will stamp your passport then and there. Nigel

Many thanks for your helpful replies.

Ok, so we talking about converting to a retirement visa. Unfortunately I'm at the end of my 15 months which I got with my 'O' visa so I believe I'm too late to transfer. (1 month before 'O' visa expires) Now I have to apply again for an 'O' visa, and this time I will transfer to a retirement visa before it expires.

The guy in Penang who helped last time has told me about the need for this 'standard' letter from the British embassy, with out it he says, I will only get a 3 months visa.

    Any info on the letter?

Nigel, I agree with your comments re. the CM immigration office, very helpful indeed.

    Thanks again,

  4. Johpa,

I believe there is a Ballet Academy on the side road just before Le Coq d'Or (same side) in Nong Hoi, not sure what it's all about, just saw the name plate on the gate. Looks active. Also there is a recently opened Dance School on Chiang Mai Land off Chang Klang Road. Just on the right as you turn into Chiang Mai Land. Hope you find what you're looking for...good luck.

  5. Being a traditional Pommie (only on Sunday that is) I like a succulent roast lunch with the usual, roast beef/lamb/pork, Yorkshire puddings, crispy roast potatoes, fresh green (not over cooked) vegetables and topped with homemade Bisto gravy...ahhhh!

Pointers in the right direction would be appreciated. I hear the Pub has a new manager who has upgraded the Sunday lunches so might just give it a go today. Will report back later.

  6. Looks like I missed another good night! Drat!! Now that P1P has done quite well (thank you) out of the meetings I trust this 'bon homme' will be shared around the other, suitable, expat venues. I know alternative places have been discussed at some length and I missed the final summation of it all, nevertheless lets not get bogged down in one place when I'm sure there are similar locations which would equally stimulate the meetings and provide food and service of the same quality and dare I say it, maybe even better that The Mango Tree (God forgive me!)

What these place may be lacking is the support and promotion (and sheer adoration) that I feel P1P was afforded (instigated?) but that's not to say they are not worthy of our esteemed patronage. I know Dave and Ann at the Bears Den and dear old Bob at Lanna Paradise, to name but two, would be delighted with the kudos bestowed by our benefaction not to mention the extra Baht especially during the forthcoming downturn in business.

So, for those who can tear themselves away from The Mango Tree, (and the Hamburgers) at most for a few hours, let us once again open the topic of the meeting point for our next get-together before the bars close at 8 and the alcohol ban becomes total (and we become teetotal...shudder).

  7. I've just received my renewal notice from Blue Cross (BUPA) for my health insurance, with a wacking 20% premium increase, my reward, I guess, for reaching the ?ripe old age of 60 and not making any claims since day 1.

Was wondering if anyone had any experiences/recommendations with health insurance. Something I don't really want to scrimp on too much but maybe I'm using a Rolls Royce service when I could get by with a Toyota.

  8. Just back from Penang by air, cost Baht 10,200 from Chiang Mai return by Thai Air.

Leaves CM at 17:30ish to Bkk. Bkk - Penang leaves 19:30 arrives 21:50ish local time Penang. (1 hour in front) Taxi to George Town centre costs RM 28 (100 Baht = 9.5 RM) set price. Imm and customs very friendly.

Stayed at Merchant Hotel in centre, cost 78 RM/night. Room clean, and and more than adequate.

Rang Mr Muthu (0164729991) came to see me next morning. Completed all necessary paperwork. Paid RM 500 for visa and RM 95 'T' money. Passport was back with me @ 14:30 next day with 1 year Non imm 'O' multiple entry visa.

Paperwork: Copy of Thai Bankbook, 2 photos, completed application form and Passport. (Muthu will guide you with form)

Next morning took taxi (RM 25) to airport for 08:40 flight to Bkk and on to CM arriving @ 11:30. (No airport tax in Malaysia for international flights)

Note of caution: 'Weekends in Malaysia vary according to the location. Although it is a Muslim country weekends in Penang are Saturday & Sunday, not Thursday & Friday as in other locations. Thai consulate therefore is closed on Sat/Sun.

Hope it is of some help.

  9. I live in Nong Hoi, so anywhere central is pretty much the same for me. I do like the Home, but parking would be more difficult.....but whatever.

BTW who is making the final decision? Seems like this could go on forever. :o

  10. Just come back from a visit to Chiang Mai Immigration to get full info of what they require for a Retirement Visa. Officer confirmed they will convert a Tourist Visa to a Non-Imm 'O' without leaving the country, but of course not the 30 days stamp deal. Full list of requirements posted on their notice board, incl. items the medical certificate must address.

    Yes they will.

  12. Roger,

Read my post again, the only info I gave was that a work permit wasn't needed for a driving lic. As for Suzy, it must be that time of the month! Please don't be so hard on we humble newbies. We are trying our best.

But must say we have a long way to go to catch up to oldtimers like yourself....OA discount at the cinema, now yer talking! What do you need to show to get your cinema pass? And how much discount do they give? At 90 Baht a show it can't be that much. 10%? A whole 9 Baht to buy your favourite candies. The hits just keep on coming!

PS I visited CM Imm. as promised, the info is posted. Hope it helps.
