  1. cant understand why its only got 512mb internal storage compared to Iphone/omnia 8-16GB

wouldnt it be a pita to carry around a little memory card or losing/misplacing it.

    http://www.htc.com/www/product.aspx?id=64796

Yes. It would be and if I didn't have a seperate iPod I wouldn't consider one. Does seem odd that other phones in their product line have much more storage but this one only has 512. I guess some people haven't gotten past the limited storage out of the box but I can carry 10,000,000 add on chips with me mind set. I think Apple got it right in this respect. As nice as an expansion slot on the iphone would have been it is still more memory out of the box than any phone at the time of it's launch had. I hope this becomes standard across the board.

On the other hand maybe they couldn't have fit so many other feature sets into it if they had included a bigger memory stick. The phone is a pretty big brick as it is, it looks to be about twice as thick as an iPhone from what I can tell. Perhaps it would have upped the price point. Who knows why they made this compromise but I am sure they had some reasoning, at least I would hope so.

Thanks to MMR for the link. I am not typically obsessed with mobiles but if I spend this much on one I don't want to get stuck with a piece of crap.

I'm still a newb when it comes to smartphones so my concerns about the HD's lack of internal memory may be unfounded.

Apparently quite large micro sd cards are available and I presume these just slot inside the phone so perhaps this option is better/more versatile than large internal memory without a slot ?, ignoring the extra cost for the card

Question is would internal memory react faster than memory retrieved from a the sd card, or, no difference ?

As for size, weight, here's some comparisons

    HTC HD 115 x 62.8 x 12 146.4gms 3.8" 480 x 800 display

    Iphone 3G 115 x 62 x 11.5 133grms 3.5" 480 x 320

    Omnia 112 x 56.9 x 12.5 122grms 3.2" 240 x 400

I guess if you can handle carrying around an Iphone , and given its popularity a lot of people can, then HTC HD is the ultimate choice if you want WM and in my case WM office.

Otherwise, for pocketability, the Omnia would be my next choice.

Guess I'll have to weigh it up, literally, when the HD hits the stores later this year.

Btw, does anyone on this thread trade for a living. My main motivation for the big display smartphone is having the option of ultra portable trading as I prefer not to carry around a notebook. I need a decent size display so I can easily view webpages, and I need to access/edit my excel files and view pdf files

Prior to the HD, I tend to think there wasn't a pocketfriendly WM smartphone with a big enough screen for my use ?

  2. HTC is rumored to come out with a model called, Touch HD which will get a 3.5" 800 x 480 pixels display

Thanks for that, seems to fit the bill

Same size as Iphone but runs WM which I need

Rumoured release xmas, will watch for updates.

Doesnt seem to have much internal storage compared to Omnia, iphone or Diamond ?

  3. I got to test it @ the new Samsung store @ Paragon, Im not that impressed with the display. It's light, but the case feels plasticky.

I'm waiting for the SE X1, HTC Touch Pro and the Android.

Those are totally different animals, since they all have slide-out Qwerty keyboards which make them ticker and less pocket friendly.

So it all depends on what kind of device you are looking for.....

HTC is coming with a new slim touch screen model with a soon though... (800 x 480 pixels) and Nokia Tube is just around the bend too....

I've been looking at the specs of the various contenders for a while now.

I need windows mobile office, excel in particular so that narrows it down

As you say, the full slide out qwertys make the phones thicker , heavier , and less pocket friendly, so that further narrows it down to the touch screens.

Samsung Omnia seems about the best available atm for my needs with HTC diamond second

Omnia has a bigger display but HTC has better resolution

Most of the reviews re the Omnia comment that the screen resolution could be better, ie, website text on the HTC is more legible than the Omnia even though its squeezed into a smaller display.

I guess the ultimate would be if HTC make a slightly larger diamond with a 3-3.5" display or Omnia improve theirs

I'm not aware of any new WM smartphones that will fit this bill

  4. Has anyone tried these, they're made in Taiwan and are DOT certified

If so, are they available in Thailand, where and how much ?

    http://www.amazon.com/Zeus-ZS-2100-Sport-H...3583&sr=8-1

The Amazon pricing is very cheap but they retail in Australia for $250 and pass the laws there so must be reasonably good quality

Anyway, need to try one on for sizing so hopefully someone can point me to a Thailand distributor

  5. I've read that the haptic feedback does not work with the keyboard

A fix may be on the way but not certain

Now here’s the disappointment, this phone was supposed to have haptic feedback and it does to a small extent however where would you most want to have this great feature, yes on the keyboard, and is it there, no!!!! Come on Samsung what is the point of giving us haptic feedback on big icons that we press when we really need it to type with. Modaco are reporting that a new Rom update will be released soon to enable the haptics on at least the Samsung Keyboard but it should be on it now.

    http://www.mobiletechaddicts.com/2008/08/2...0-omnia-review/

there was a recent rom update but this apparently caused the haptic feedback to disappear altogether.

    August 25, 2008

samsung-i900-omnia-rom-update-teaser-thumb.jpg Samsung Singapore just made its first ROM update for the SGH-i900 Omnia Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional smartphone available which can now be downloaded from the web........

.......There are several posts in the comments section that this update has an adverse effect on haptic technology implimentation that Chris noted was missing in his review. Those who had it seem to have lost it:

    http://www.mobiletechaddicts.com/2008/08/2...bye-bye-haptic/

I guess they'll sort it out eventually ?

  6. I bought the OMNIA a few days ago and tried to set up a connection to my laptop to secure all the addresses (contacts) etc.

    My laptop runs on Vista.

I installed the synchronisation software from the CD in the OMNIA's package (Windows Mobile Device Center) and then tried to set it up properly. But the set-up insists on "Outlook not installed" and I cannot backup my Samsung.

Apparently Window's own synchronisation software does not know that under Vista, there is no Outlook anymore. It's called "Microsoft Mail" now. And this program is properly installed. There is no way to install and old version of Outlook under Vista.

So just a warning to all you potential OMNIA buyers: The accompanying software is seriously flawed. (Why am I not surprised, it's Microsoft, right?) Back-up are NOT possible.

But if any of you has an idea how to solve the problem, i would be more than happy.

I've got no idea but you might find an answer on this forum

  7. Hi

I have the HTC P3600I, very hard to see the screen in day/sun light, but the phone is very good, never had a problem with it, just that i like the Omnia

Apparently the HTC Diamond display performs slightly better in sunlight than the Omnia

<H3 itxtvisited="1">Display: VGA wins on points</H3>The specs tell the whole story here - the HTC Touch Diamond VGA screen has more than three times the pixel count of the Samsung i900 Omnia wide QVGA unit. What can we say - seeing is believing: the Diamond pulls off a much finer image in some applications.

The problem is that a 2.8" screen is a bit too small for VGA to show its full potential. Still, there are plenty of applications where the difference is as tangible as it gets - navigation apps, the web browser, and the gallery just to name a few.

Of course, size does matter when it comes to displays, so the 3.2" screen of the Omnia earns a different kind of pat on the back. If only the Diamond had a similar-sized display, it would've made much more of that VGA resolution.

Sunlight legibility issues have been plaguing PocketPC displays forever and sadly they remain unsolved in both the Diamond and the Omnia. In all fairness, the HTC performs somewhat better in the sun but still doesn't come even close to Nokia screen standards for example (let alone Apple iPhone).

  8. I've been using the 4GB Asus EeePc 701 for about a year. I use it when I travel because the 'traditional' lap top was just a pain to lug through the airports.

The light weight and small size are a huge bonus - it's good enough for email, and the bundled software handles Excel, Powerpoint and Word well enough to work on the move. The quick boot and shut down is also great when doing a quick check of mail before a flight or wifi-ing over a coffee.

I brought some 4GB Asus EeePc for the kids and what annoyed me was [tounge in cheek] (1) too cheap compared to the other note book we use (2) works too well for what it is (3) upset we never went that route for the office notebooks .

All in all they are the best for users on the move without a doubt.

The EeePC 1000 looks like a good compromise between screen size and rugged portability.

It has a 40gb SSD so should be fairly robust.

Only problem is the SSD only comes with Linux but I suppose getting XP installed wouldnt be too hard.

    http://eeepc.asus.com/global/1000.htm

Anyone seen the 40GB SSD Eeepc 1000 in Thailand yet ?

  9. I was actual looking for the same mobile phone and found that somebody in Thailand already seems to have tasted the phone Samsung Omnia SGH-I900 Experience

There's a discussion forum here dedicated to the Omnia

    Official thread for Samsung Omnia

    http://www.ppcsg.com/index.php?showtopic=101064

I've read a lot of reviews and comparisons with the Omnia, HTC Diamond and Iphone.

For me, I want windows mobile office, excel in particular so that rules out the Iphone.

The Diamond sounds good but only 2.8" display vs Omnia 3.2" display and Iphone 3.5".

However the resolution on the HTC is superior to the Omnia so apparently text on webpages may be easier to read on the HTC despite the smaller display.

Will be interesting if business oriented smartphones start going towards large lightweight touch screen display phones and abandon the conventional qwerty keyboard.

  10. I've got it a few days back at MBK, totally love it. Except I've always had problems with Nokia build quality, I have some chrome peeling off at the bottom of it already, and I use the supplied pouch all the time.

    Hi Paveet,

I'm after getting the Omnia too, is it officially released here now or was that an 'unlocked' version ? And how much are they selling for ?

  11. I bought a VAIO when I first moved here and I have had two problems with it. First I had to replace a dead battery (6k) and then the DVD was causing me a lot of problems so I replaced that too (2k). I should add that I am a power user and use the computer at least 10 hours/day and it is on 24/7.

Out of curiosity, why did you have to buy a new battery? Was it out of warranty or is Sony service really that bad, or is battery warranty short?

Asking because I am also a power user and usually manage to break the battery before the 1 year warranty is over, meaning I get a new replacement one. I did it with Acer, did it with the MacBook Pro.. :o

@OP: If you can get a 3 year warranty. Notebooks break and in Thailand they break even more (heat, humidity). Looks like you don't need dedicated graphics memory - you will actually probably never use the graphics card and run in "Stamina mode" instead. Stamina mode uses the built-in chipset graphics and turns off the dedicated NVidia card. The advantage is that it uses much less battery in this mode. It also should not get as hot. Chipset graphics are just fine for everything except heavy 3D stuff. If you just run some normal Windows apps, you'll never notice a difference.

Other things - one of these has a processor with 6MB cache, that's definitely the fastest one, newest processor and all. Other models are the same price but with a worse processor so I guess they must be older models. If they were the same generation, they should be cheaper. The latest generation of intel processors has 6MB or 3MB cache, so that's easy to tell. 4MB and 2MB are the older ones. 2GB or even 1GB built in RAM is a joke for this price, I'd get 4GB for Vista's sake. Vista needs it :D

    Good info, thanks for that

  12. I'm also not a VAIO fan at all...even if their hardware doesn't break (which it does), their software is EXTREMELY buggy...on my VGN-C23S the Sony Vista apps for controlling brightness/volume from the function keys don't work most of the time (requiring a restart), the DVD-RW is a highly shoddy Quanta OEM drive (this is just ridiculous given that Sony makes their own), the volume from the speakers is also crap and the VGA monitor output is not exactly pristine quality...plus it has only 2 USB ports, located one next to another (so basically 1 USB port).

Buy DELL. Excellent build quality and top-notch software.

yeah, I was quite keen on the Dell XPS M1330 until I read this

Dell's recent software patch to control heating problems caused by faulty Nvidia graphics cards has attracted a fierce response from unhappy users, who say Dell is shying away from addressing the larger problem of bad hardware.......

  13. I'm moving down the list of 13.3" notebooks available

At first I liked the Toshiba portege M800 but have heard its a bit flimsy and only comes in white.

Next The Dell XPS M1330 looked good value but recent media articles say there are overheating issues with the graphics card.

So now I'm looking at the Sony Vaio 13.3" and trying to decide which model is best for me

I dont mind paying extra for a good display so that means I'll choose a model with the LED display.

I want to run an extra monitor when at home so which Vaio 13.3" has the best graphics for this amongst the models with LED display.

According to the singapore site these three models have the LED display

    http://www.sony.com.sg/product/CompareProd...dels=VGN-SZ55GN

I dont really understand the difference between the dedicated video memory (64MB) of the VGN-SZ79GN/C compared to the VGN-SZ583N/C and VGN-SZ58GN/C which seem to have a higher total available graphics memory

Which one is better for running an additional monitor

Thanks in advance to any Vaio users that can advise

It really depend on what you want to use it for.. They can all use an external monitor just fine.

The only reason I would go for a dedicated memory solution is if you expect to run fancy 3D programs and or 3D games.

On the dedicated memory it is less likely to experience internal bandwidth bottlenecks, thus better performance.

Are you 'just' going to do Windowsing on the box, the difference will be absolutely minimal and probably not even noticeable.

I'm not a big fan of 13" systems. Unless you are on the road most of the time and the weight is very important to you (bicycle or similar), I would recommend a larger screen.

One advice: don't buy the top model as it is usually ~20% overpriced.

As Reimar said, their service isn't the best, but I just wanted a VAIO, cause I hate all the flashy, blinking alternatives. VAIO simple and elegant.

Forgot: .... and James Bond has one!!! :o

    GL with your purchase.

    EDIT: Typos

    Thanks for the feedback

I'm not a gamer but trade for a living.

Wrt to running an extra monitor, an additional larger monitor would have my trading screen running on it while the notebook screen would be for viewing websites and excel.

The Vaio's with the dedicated video memory are the same price as the non dedicated , at least amongst the LED models so I suppose get the dedicated ?

I'm attracted to the 13.3" for portability, carrying on a motorbike.

Majority of time (at home) I will use an additional 17 " monitor so the 13.3" notebook screen size not a big problem

  15. Have had my E90 since launch but switched to the E71 a few days ago (had to go to Fortune as the Nokia shop had sold out of them)

By far the best phone I've ever had and a steal at less than 16k

So small yet so usable and has the same battery as the E90 so lasts for days without charging

    Awesome awesome phone

    Here's a review:

    http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/207654/nokia-e71.html

Its not a comparative product to the iphone..... people buying this would have no interest in the multi media functions of an iphone which is really 50% of the iphones use. Nowhere in that review did they even attempt to compare it to the iphone since its not in the same line at all. Actually they did: "As an entertainment device, though, the E71 certainly falls behind the iPhone." Dont get me wrong, Id be the first to jump on a new phone that offered what iphone offers, I hate apple for trying to put restrictions on their paying customers and would happily give someone else my business. Im just saying, you shouldnt refer to this as the anti-iphone since it wont tap into the same market at all.

That's what I mean when I say it's the anti-iphone - it is the complete opposite of the iphone as the E71 is designed for work and not a media device. I've tried using my mates iphone for typing but have never liked touchscreen keyboards and until a tactile touchscreen comes out never will.

Right now this is THE mobile for people who need a phone for work. For business use I think the E71 beats both the iphone and Blackberrys

What do you guys think of the Samsung Omnia i900 as a business friendly phone with Iphone capabilities

There's plenty of reviews avail if you google up Omnia so I wont bother posting a link

The touch screen has haptic feedback which gives a slight vibration when you type etc.

It runs windows mobile and office so will cover business applications and can sync to ones PC.

The screen is 3.2" compared to Iphone 3.5" so little difference there but the Omnia is smaller and lighter.

16GB memory, 5 MP camera, GPS, 3G, etc....

Price is ~SGD1000/USD750 so that might be a deal breaker for some but otherwise it seems hard to beat ?

  16. The rapid wearing away of the painted surfaces on Dell laptops is appalling, and their biggest shortcoming in my view. I managed to convince Dell customer care to replace the entire casing (which they claim was not covered by warranty as it is a cosmetic issue) but they said they did it as a "one-time gesture to restore faith in their company". I only had the computer 10 months and it had very light use. I sold it immediately after the case was replaced. We also had this exact same issue with two other Dell notebooks in Thailand, not to mention multiple overheating issues on two units. I would discourage the OP against purchasing the XPS M1330 he is interested in for these very reasons.

    Thanks for the feedback.

I too read very good reviews about the 1330, they did mention it got warm but not a major overheating problem. Nevertheless I'll take on board what you said and do some more research .

Back to the original question, are there any Dell authorised agents or just plain retailers in Pattaya or Bangkok ?

I have been using the XPS M1330 for the past 3 months and i like it a lot. It just gets warm sometime but definately not skin-burning temperature.

Also dont choose the Texedo Black. It leaves your finger-print marks there. I went for the Blue and my girl went for the Red, they were very good quality. The paints dont drop for us.

Go for it. I bought it from Singapore and the warranty is valid internationally. You can buy it there or if you need help to purchase it, feel free to pm me as i travel between BKK and SG often.

Thanks for the reply and offer.

I'm reside in Cambodia but visit Thailand every now and then. May look into a reliable online merchant that ships to Cambo, havent found one yet.

As a notebook noob, I have a few questions

:What is the main source of the overheating.

    :Is it the CPU.

:Does a faster CPU run cooler under the same workload.

:I want to run two monitors when at home, should I get the optional 128mb Nvidia Geforce card as opposed to the standard Intel® Integrated Graphics Media Accelerator X3100

:Would the notebook run cooler with the 128mb video card.

:The 1330 comes with optional 64GB SSD which is enough storage space for my needs. What advantages does the SSD have over the HDD.

:During heavy home use, if it does get a bit warm, can I run an external keyboard and mouse ?

If so, how is this done, USB or Bluetooth..

Sorry for the simple notebook questions, just running an ancient desktop atm.

Heres a link to all the XPS 1330 options. The 64gb SSD is under the customise it link
