  1. I did not vote because there was no Maybe... 1. I would prefer to be tested first, to see if I already had the antibodies  2. I would want to know the type of microbiological and other content of the vaccine   3. It would also depend upon who was manufacturing the vaccine  4. As an old timer I had Polio as a child, as well as all the usual contagious diseases and last year had both Dengue Fever and Chikungungya Fever, the latter also induced a heart attack resulting in the insertion of 2 stents into 2 of the 3 major heart arteries (Thank you Poland)...

So yes I am at high risk, since I would like to live for many more years, I would intuitively be for vaccination.... BUT  Regrettably, no one knows if having the antibodies actually offers any form of protection.  So those who have had COVID-19 fever may still be at risk, though probably milder... and those who have had it are being dischareged after testing negative, only to be positive again 30 to 60 days later.  This virus is not behaving like any virus of a similar nature according to leading Epidemiologists, EM and ICU doctors, even using Ventilators, to help a patient's breathing, the rule book has had to be abandoned/heavily modified, current discussions between doctors globally are ongoing as they discover more from those who have had to try and deal with it. (EG the lesson from Italy is not to rush to intubation because the intubation is damaging peoples' lungs - the cure is worse than the disease).  The actual mechanics of the progress of the disease inside the body has never been encountered before and the way to treat it is contrarian to the way SARS and MERS were treated, nor is the rate of mutation of the virus known. It really is a "Novel" (NEW) Coronavirus, hence "Novel Coronavirus-19".... Welcome to 2020...

Yes. Even if it is illegal no-one cares.

Not really true, there is actually a consumer protection type agency working in Thailand, who do actually sort out problems, it is a part of the Prime Minister's office. Quote:

The OCPB receives complaints from consumers who suffer hardship or injury resulting from the acts of the business operator for submitting it to the Consumer Protection Board for further consideration and proceeding. Every consumer being disadvantaged or injury from any product or service can make the complaint at the Office of the Consumer Protection Board, the Government House, Bangkok 10300 by sending letter to P.O. Box 99, Bangkok 10300 or coming by himself/herself or by telephone hotline number 1166.

Consumer rights are addressed in The Consumer Protection Act B.E. 2522 as amended by the Consumer Protection Act (No.2) B.E. 2541.

  3. Hi ...if you can get some 'Saw Palmetto'  450mg and take one before bed time, you may well find the 6 trips a night will be drastically reduced, it works wonders on an enlarged prostate... caution if you are taking a blood thinner such as Warfarin, it will raise your INR level, so the warfarin dosage will need to be adjusted slightly lower, but you should really discuss it with your doctor if such is the case...

  4. While the clear looking jellyfish is probably a Chrysaora_quinquecirrha the orange coloured one is more probably a Lion's Mane jellyfish, the latter has a vicious sting, although supposedly not native to the Gulf of Thailand,  have personally encountered them on many occasions in both Ao Tok bay side and Pu Yai Pung's side of Koh Taen island, opposite Thong Krut on the southern tip of Koh Samui.

  5. Hallo,  Several points... firstly does your friend have any idea of his National Insurance number, many years ago it was also linked to an NHS number... These would give the Pensions office the means to check on the 10years contributions more quickly.  Secondly, if they can find his records without NI number, usually from knowing where he had lived and paid taxes etc (i.e. his old local tax office), then he will have been deemed to have deferred his pension., this would mean if he were to claim it he would have the option of receiving a lump sum payment and his original small 1/3 pension or a higher pension with no lump sum.  All pensions for men are counted from aged 65 at present. The freezing of the rate of the pension because someone is living in Thailand, is only frozen from the day of a claim is made for pension payments, until then your friend would be entitled to all UK resident national increases. Chok dee

Wow, very futuristic, did they use shuttering for the concrete wall.

That was part of the problem we used purpose built 6mm steel ties hooked onto the 12mm steel uprights/9mm steel circumference ties holding the plywood panelling sandwich in place as the form.  The pressure of the volume of concrete was so great that some of the panels bulged.  BTW if using a builder, I would advise obtaining an all inclusive quote for the whole build with detailed specs for everything, have the architect/engineer who did the plans sign off on the quality of the work on each step payment... needless to say this involves having a separate architect/engineer to the building company, but in the long run if the architect/engineer has produced detailed plans, which the local tessabaan has approved, it should prevent shoddy work and save you money in the long run.  I was lucky I had a really good (properly qualified) engineer help me, but I had the advantage of having had a small building company in Samui for several years prior to the build.

How could you build for 2/3 of the cost if you built it today, I am curious as I may build my own house and I am looking out for pitfalls?

    1. The building technique involved... ie poured concrete 2.2 metre circular wall inside a form, would now do with breeze blocks filled with concrete... 2. Interruptions to construction, when the first team had to go and bail out their compatriots on another job, ditto 2nd team who had to return to their country because their leader's passport expired... 3. Building the Dome roof itself was a much delayed nightmare with continual experimentation to get it right, next time would use a Chinese made pvc half inflatable dome as the scaffold... 4. Ensure the Electrician/Plumber/Engineer everything, actually was capable of doing the job required...   just some of the problems of building something no one knew how to do locally...

  8. Hi

If it helps, I built my own Dome in Koh Samui 3 years ago at a cost of ThB20,000 per sqm, (78sqm internal living space) however I employed the labour directly, supervising them myself, to obtain as good a quality build as possible; bought all the materials myself, all high quality hard wood, stone floor tiles, jacuzzi etc with a concrete driveway, separate shed over a 16cum water tank... Materials and labour in Samui tend to be 10% to 20% above the cost of the same in Suratthani... From lessons learned during the build I could probably do the same today for 2/3 the cost, plus 10% for material and labour inflation.  Chok dee. with the build

  9. Approximate running costs:

Social Security and taxes for 4 Thai and self + acct fees = 7662 pm

    Minimum wages 4 Thais = 36,000 pm

Annual Company Accounts = 15,000 pa

    Work Permit renewal = 4,500pa

Company net profit tax between 10% to 30%

    1yr Visa Extension = 13,500pa

Set up cost of company = 30,000

VAT (currently 7%) for goods and services on company with turnover in excess of 1.8millionpa

(Withholding tax on money earned inside Thailand 5- 10%)

Import taxes on importation of anything used in the business averaged at 20%, but ranges from 0% to 80%

  10. It is very easy to renew I have now done mine twice however they will not do it until the license has expired in other words you cannot get it renewed the day it expires but you could 6 months after it has expired. Recently I renewed my passport and because they use your passport number on your drivers license I went to The office to have my current license updated they told me that they could not do this got both my passports and put a band around them and handed them back to me , when I asked why they had done this the guy behind the desk told me that if I was stopped by police then I could show them my passports which in turn would validate my drivers license, yet another reason why they call it AMAZING THAILAND !

FYI. I had my DL updated in Samui earlier this year, with change of new PP number AND change of address. It did not extend the time frame of validity, still expiring on its original date, but did get an updated DL. Perhaps it was because of the change of address that allowed it to happen.

  11. You don't say where you are in Thailand. If in Koh Samui, the Samsung Service centre is on the ring road in a parade of shops on left hand side just before Samui Town Centre (where the Tourist Police and Palm Construction are based) on Opposite side of ring road after passing Bic C on way from Chaweng to Fisherman's village. Need to look carefully it is not well sign posted and is in a break between rows of town houses with shops on ground floor. Best of luck.

  12. Hallo

    1. You cannot apply for a replacement passport without an official Police report of its loss.

    2. I would first go to see the local lawyer and tell him you have been advised by an English lawyer it is your obligation to file a report that your passport is missing. So if he can't find it within 48hours that is the course of action you are obliged to take. Technically your passport is the property of the crown.

    3. Then if no passport is forthcoming I would go to your local Immigration office and explain what has happened. Do you have a copy of your passport showing your current visa stamp and identity page ? If so take it with you when you visit. Request a Police Report of its loss.

    4. OR An alternative is to report the loss to your local police station. Request a Police Report of its loss.

    5. Either the Immigration Police or local police will indubitably contact the lawyer.

    6. Be aware once you report your passport as lost or stolen to https://www.gov.uk/browse/abroad/passports it will immediately be cancelled and you will have the expense of applying for a replacement, even if it subsequently reappears. https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports

Best of luck, (fyi am a retired English solicitor)

  13. SheungWan with respect, though I agree the US is not a larger Export Market for the UK than the EU, if you read a little lower in the Wikipedia article it reads as follows,:

    European Union membership[edit]

As a member of the European Union, UK is bound to numerous EU-wide trade and market policies. According to the 2014 report within the "Balance of EU competences" review, majority of the EU trade policies have been beneficial for UK, despite the proportion of the country's exports going to the EU falling from 54 percent to 47 percent over the past decade. The total value of exports however has increased in the same period from £130 billion (€160 billion) to £240 billion (€275 billion).[155] The report on research and development concluded that "The balance of competence for the free movement of goods and IP [intellectual property] works in the UK's interests".[156]

  14. It really is a crap shoot ! If you can factor in that globally Governments have added $57 trillion to their debt burden since 2007 via quantitative easing etc (a debt-to- GDP ratio increase of 17%) then just imagine what will happen as major currency interest rates begin to increase. The price fluctuations in the Bond market last October is a case in point. The 0.4 percent swing in US Treasuries back on October 15th was an event that was supposed to occur once every 3 billion years or so according to JP Morgan’s Jamie Dimon.

  15. Samui Bike Week was started by Screaming Eagle and Samui Pirates MC with Ohm from Ohm Big Bikes in Samui as a way of raising money for charity while having some fun and had nothing to do with TAT. Screaming Eagle was a victim of Involuntary Suicide 4 years ago...
