  1. Ordinary security guards are as much a liability as a safety for a village. This based on experience in Bangkok and Pattaya. I guess 'Good intentions' or serviability make them more often a liability than 'bad intentions' or personal economic interests. So in this context I definitely prefer technology based solutions (electronic gates, camera etc).

Whatever the solution, I wonder what are the legal basis to impose barriers (or any kind of access condition) to a set of indivial houses and plots of land? Basically, access must be granted unconditionally? It must be a public road, to be controlled by police alone? As rubbish collection, water and electricity are collected be the respective service provider, as is the common fee (gardener, guards). If it is a legal entity that owns the village roads, how would your co-ownership be documented? In the land title? In a separate contract? What if a later buyer does't agree?

For condos there is a law addressing these issues - but what for house villages?

  2. A lot of documented doubts expressed in this thread.

I understand that in Thailand like in many other countries there is a reluctance to sell its land to foreigners for many reasons.

What I miss are some views what would happen, if the current arrangements become null and void? How much would the market break in, in areas preferred by foreigners? Would the local land owners accept the subsequent reduction of their wealth at these locations? Other tangible consequences? Would the system (government + private services involved) jeopardize its international credibility (face) by revoking the current arrangements or they wouldn't care?

I guess the next steps are likely to be forward - gradual, constructive, but pretty sure more expensive in terms of obtaining as well as holding. But I wonder what others think ...

  3. Anyone knows the whereabouts of the family members of the current PM - that would be a more relevant indicator for the appraisal of the situation

A lot of current government families have police/army protection. But that's completely understandable given the number of threats from the red leaders.

I keep wondering who has an interest on getting the pot to boil (and our blog is part of it)? Precisely the third party group/s you mention may have a particular interest to control various players. If these families would have left the grounds - that would be a serious situation, would it? The family of the sacked PM keeps on travelling since quite some time, isn't it? Thus nothing so special.

  4. I wonder if they can use some of the money to teach people to drive!

They know how to drive fine. Lots of close calls but no more accidents then any other places. Maybe you are just scared of the roads.

Have you really ever actually driven here? Your comment suggests otherwise. :)

That there is some reluctance to give up up traditional driving styles is more easy to accept up in Nan than in larger agglomerations - but that there are plenty of Falangs apparently proud adopting the same style (and risks) is puzzling. Traffic is a collective behaviour and 'Blending in' a surviving skill, but where are the limits?

  5. hi do any of you guys know where i can get a new fuel pump for a bmw r1100s near pattaya

    new or s/h thanks

Unfortunately I could not find a second hand fuel pump for your model. Usually a car fuel pump is fitted here around, however should have sufficient capacities. Some of the BMW parts are the same in their cars as well as in their bikes, different numbers and different price of course ...

May be this web page helps you to find substitutes.

    good luck

  6. hi do any of you guys know where i can get a new fuel pump for a bmw r1100s near pattaya

    new or s/h thanks

Didn't find any BMW parts near Pattaya. A new one can be ordered from Barcelona by phone or internet provided you have a part or bike number (usually 3 weeks delivery time).

There are reliable second hand parts available - but again in BKK.

  7. BBC, DW, TV5 all mentioned Pattaya in their headlines - of course in connection with a largely violent-free demonstration (Thai TV reports a total of 17 injured) that succeeded in disrupting an Asian summit - after all not too bad PR. Some research suggest that even bad head lines are better than no mentioning at all.

  8. At least two years I benefited of local adission fees (based on my Thai driving licence) to parks all over Thailand. In recent months I observed that some parks deny to lower fee. Not consistently so.

In one occasion the very same park I visitted weeks ago insisted on the higher fee. The only difference (beside the date) was that I arrived with a Thai partner (witness?) and that a internal gathering took place in the back yard . Discussing the puzzeling practice we were shown a letter dated 2548 (missing reference number) outlining the fee policy (200 / foreigner).

This inconsistency is anoying. :o I'm stupid enough to let it spoil my mood. Does someone know more about it? At what level in the administration this practice to consider driving licence holders as locals has been approved?

Unfortunately the higher costs seem not to be related to the services or 'values' offered by the park to the visitor.

  9. http://www.likito.com/

    here's a shop

kawasakiksr.com proves very usefull (english too), including prices of quality upgrade and links to ksrthailand.com with lots of suppliers.

'Kawasaki KSR options' Vol 2 is a publication distributed in bike circles (083494-5453). Had some problems finding it but it's worth the effort (all in thai but very informative)

A certain Pekky seems to be the leading guy involved in modifications.

  10. smoking in one-way streets on odd calendar days is prohibited too (i think) :o

jokes may hep to overrcome frustration: in BKK they bring you an ashtrey on the noble venue terrasse beside Landmark but have all over no-smoking signs and fee-warnings at a - din'd believe it - Issarn food stall along fume polluted road close to Khao Sarn area! Stickers not only on the stall's cart but at every table glued to the shutter of the closed shop behind!

    SB :D
