  1. Requirements for registration.

    1. Passport copies of front page, your non-imm B visa page, arrival stamp and the departure card

    2. Proof of address by any of the following

    - Yellow house book

    - Work permit

    - Letter from you embassy

    - Letter from your local immigration

In your case you need to go with the letter from immigration, i'm sure others are here to advice on how to get one soon

The dealer will most likely ask you to sign some forms needed for the registration but will take care of it for you. Just use proper dealer, the bigger the better in most cases. If you can take some Thai friend with you to see all goes well.

  2. Nonsense, work permit is not needed to register a vehicle in your name.

Non-immigrant visa is listed in the requirements (i.e. your business visa) but reports say Phuket will register without as well.

I would not buy anything from any car park in Patong, visit any larger bike dealer in your area or Phuket town. They know what to do and will handle the registration for you.

  3. I have the same box, almost every time there is power cut that results re-boot i get error that the transponder is not there and no signal.

Don't know what's going on but sometimes it comes back after reboot from menu and sometimes needs few re-boots to get it right. Couple of times had to leave it to cool down for a couple of hours and after switching it on all was good again.

Maybe similar issue with the CA error ?

  4. I know lot of people who used to buy one year multiple non-O's for 10k without never leaving the country nor qualifying the visa. This was still ongoing say 10 - 15 years ago and quite common. Just using agents who paid immigration to get the visas. Although when these guys got work they went legit and flew out to get non-B and WP. And i can understand and respect that, no one lost. Win win for all parties. Not like abusing certain visa classes and getting trouble for those who are legit.

For information, is this kind of practice still possible?

Who knows, although all those "agents" from back then have disappeared long ago and i haven't heard of anyone getting one for almost ten years.

And even that time lot of guys got busted going cheap and getting fake stamps. Lose your passport and oops, immigration database says you been overstaying for years while you though you had legit exit and entry stamps with records in immigration database.

  5. If your going to do the tests, written and drive test, bring your car. It is difficult without one. And no tea money needed.

If your home country DL is in english try with that one, they might accept and convert to Thai DL without tests. Or get copy certified by your Embassy and you should be good.

There was recent thread on CM process and how it worked, maybe in the pinned thread?

  6. There is one device that may be out in Thailand soon with sufficient market desirability, and that has LTE on it - the new iPad (weird not calling it the iPad 3).

However, it's LTE frequencies are set up for 700 and 2100 MHz (2100 is the global standard - 700 is common in the US), and AIS is using 1900 and 2300 MHz, what are the odds that the AIS frequencies will change and any devices bought now will have to be replaced...

After all, tourists coming here will be using devices with the 700 and 2100 MHz frequencies... - if the operators want to collect any roaming charges, the frequencies will have to change before they go live...)

Not quite, 2100MHz is pretty much global standard for 3G (WCDMA). There is also 3G deployments in 859, 900 and couple of other frequencies around the world. USA i understand has their own, most likely something to do with the military reserving frequencies in their exclusive use.

Now LTE's problem is that there is no "standard" frequency to use yet like 2100 in 3G and that is one reason why there is so few handsets. Manufacturers are waiting to see which frequency countries and operators select before bringing in devices.

  7. Many provinces use different ways of going about renewal, so go to your local DLT and ask what is required, easy, you do not need a IDP to get a Thai driving license for renewal or a first time 1 year Thai license, IDP's are NOT translated into Thai.

Your full valid driving license with a photo and translated to English if it is not already done so is OK.

Your twisting my words now. I replied to earlier posts in the thread and never claimed you need to have IDP etc.

The manual from DS we are discussing states that you need home country DL, printouts from internet explaining the licence classes AND you need to take full written test and drive test as well.

I'm just pointing out that with IDP or embassy certified copy of your home country DL translated to english (if not already in english) and you don't need to take the full written exam and drive test.

As this is Thailand, some locations accept english home country DL without embassy stamp. Unfortunately this was not the case with DS as he needed to do the exam and drive test.

So there is two ways to get your Thai DL

    1. Convert your existing DL from home (present IDP or embassy certified copy in english)

    2. Qualify for one (as Thais do when applying first DL) by passing a written exam and drive test

Both ways above are subject to color blindness and reaction tests etc done at DLT,

  8. You OP says the guy telling you 91 and no gasohol and sticker in tank and book says 95 and E10 gasohol ok. In any case whatever it is go with the bike's manual. It's no brainer really.

And as Richard says occasional emergency fill with 91 does not matter. Just top up with 95 as soon as possible.

Using or not using gasohol comes down to personal opinion, there is lot of discussion here in old threads. I'd use it only when regular is not available but that's my personal view.

So go by the book and your fine.

  9. They were both wrong, it must be minimum 99 E85 jet for fast bike like that. Or you risk serious damage to the flux capacitors.

Hopefully I will get a serious answer soon!!!

ok lets be serious, which one is correct. The company that designed and build the bike or some bloke at some shop that imported the bike second hand from Japan?

Take a deep breath and think hard coffee1.gif

  10. dual sim has al but died on hi end phones for a couple of reasons ,mainly due to the fact that running two sims drain the battery twice as fast and also because the networks i think dont want people to avail of dual sim phones because they can take advantantage of seperate pricing and promotions etc

will notice that nearly all the phones that can take 2-3 sim cards are made by unknown companies in china

strange that nokia ,htc samsung ,apple etc havent capitalised on this market unless the networks are against it

Emmm no, Nokia has few dual sim models and they are selling very well in developing markets like India and Africa. I just got myself Asha 200 and battery life is excellent, it's spare phone and keeps standby several days. Second sim is hot swap so easy to switch. They just introduced new versions in Barcelona end of last month.

Granted these are all lower end phones as that's where the market is. Dual sim mainly sells in developing markets and low income bracket. People buying higher end phones are not going to bother to change sim card based on the person they are calling, They just pay the higher rate or subscribe to post paid plans where it does not matter that much.

Other group is people like myself that travel for work and have numbers in more than one country with need to keep them standby all the time.

I used to use chinese cheapos before but problem is to keep your contacts up to date. Very usual that only way is to manually input all contacts. Even with cheap Asha i can connect to Nokia suite and sync from my outlook. It also takes back-up. The new version will have exchange active sync so does corporate emails. Pretty good for a phone that cost couple of thousand baht and has full qwerty keypad.

  11. Maha Sahrakam is a interesting place I assume. But they have just one and a half 4LTE enabled devices there. So what is the rationale behind a trial in the middle of nowhere?

Trials are better run in areas without too much congestion and subscribers around. If it some reason causes issues with existing 2G/3G network you don't want it to happen in downtown Bangkok. It might very well be that they have some switching center in the area etc making it convenient location. Usually you run these in at least two areas to test connectivity between switching centers.

I doubt the trial is open for customers. Closed trial with network planners driving around with LTE capable test kits fitted in their cars. But who knows maybe they have one base station somewhere open for public access just for PR reasons.

  12. Moreover, the 4G system will help relieve the network density problem once an increasing number of consumers use the 3G system.

Right of course people will sign up for the old 3G when 4G is available.......

You may be parsing the statement incorrectly? I suspect the implication is that by the time LTE/4G is available existing 3G infrastructure may be over-subscribed. Makes sense to me, not sure why you seem confused by the statement?

It is just a simple announcement about a trial; not sure why so many people think this means something more, or less, than that?

Quite right, operators are dying for cost effective ways to increase bandwidth and capacity. The data usage is exploding and in Thailand this is still ahead and will be a big problems very soon when subscribers sign on to data plans in numbers. We have already seen those unlimited monthly plans to disappear with introduction of data capped plans.

4G or LTE is just one way for the operators to increase the capacity of their networks. Next will be so called WiFi offloading meaning operators will push subscribers to WiFi networks in congested locations. Just for the simple reason that WiFi is very cost effective way to provide additional bandwidth in congested locations which usually are malls and cafes etc.

The technology is developing fast, give it few years and you don't even notice nor you are interested which technology carries your data. It just happens and you pay a one off monthly fee as you do now for 3G.

  13. If memory serves, Vietnam launched 4G in September 2010.

Yep, better get that memory checked. USA is using HSPA+ (3g+) and marketing it as 4G. a european operators is only just launching 4G as a proof of concept in once small city to test results / performance / issues.

AIS 4G, just marketing hype at this point. Anyone can throw down a few 4G sites and grab some headlines, in reality they are trailing in the 3G arena and are trying to atleast boost their image as the mobile data leader.

If i remember correctly this Vietnam 4G, same as in Cambodia, was WiMax. Not even close to 4G but marketed as such.

Also good to remember that even LTE is not in 4G speeds yet. Although it now been agreed that LTE can be marketed as 4G.

For anyone looking for the descriptions and speeds just check wikipedia or old posts here. The tables been posted several times.

And US is now running LTE and coverage is improving. Scandinavia has seen selected cities for a some time now.

It's been mostly USB dongles so far but now with US going LTE there starts to be phones and other devices available as well. Latest being new iPad with LTE connectivity (US Frequencies i'd assume).

  14. My wife has applied few shengen visas. There is no guarantee or financial requirements needed for spouse of EU citizen.

When we applied tourist visa before we were married i needed to provide letter stating that i will cover all the costs for accommodation and living etc. However this has nothing to do with temporary residence permits etc.

Your wife or her family can still sponsor or guarantee or whatever your 12 month extension by depositing 400k in the bank under your name. If your thinking just getting letter saying they will give you accommodation and feed you for a year forget it. Not going to happen.

  15. And to clarify.

It is common understanding that your UK DL armed with IDP can be used three months and after that you should have Thai DL. So do not wait until it expires.

Sure this being Thailand you have no problems driving with your UK DL or without any DL as long as there is accident or something else happens. If your lucky insurance companies accept your UK DL but if not.....

  16. Still get the IDP from UK. With it you don't need to take written and drive tests. You could also use your UK one translated and certified by your embassy but it is a hassle.

With the IDP from UK it will be easy as all DLT's in Thailand are familiar with it.

  17. Reported in the "other" paper just this week.

Customs have identified 20 luxury cars that have been imported as used cars by Thai students returning after graduation. The cars were in fact new luxury cars and sold for profit right after import. Customs stated in the paper that they have identified 20 cars so far and will go after them saying their present owners will be contacted and taxes due will be payable by present owners. I'd assume they will just impound them until taxes are paid in full.

Same article also mentioned that they are looking into several big import companies and suspect foul play and corruption. Estimated 1 billion baht worth of taxes been avoided and the investigations are continuing.

It was this week "other" paper so maybe something in nation as well...

  18. I noticed same issue in my HTC running GB. Also i got all the time notifications to link contacts again and again. Bit annoying but always able to restore those few that went missing.

Now i'm running Samsung with modded CM7, i only sync with outlook now and no issues.

As a hint, it costs bit money but not too much, i use Plaxo premium that has save my life more than once when phones are lost or something else happens. It syncs with almost anything like gmail, outlook and so on. I also have 1000+ contacts and have been able to restore from Plaxo couple of times already. They also have android app but haven't used it yet.

And this was legal to use agencies to take the passports out of the country?

To me that is visa abuse right there. These actions lead to it becoming more difficult to aquire a non-o vis for the legit. Setting standards?

Yes, it is abuse and illegal. But i can not see how this made it more difficult to others?

Not like using ed-visa to work which has resulted "crackdowns" already. Remember the guy who after 5 years on ed visa could not say hello in Thai.
