  1. What happens when you are pulled over by a copper .. breathalyzed .. and found drunk in LOS? Is it the same as getting busted for driving a motorcycle without a helmet? .. That is .. pay a fine and get sent on your merry way .. still without the helmet?

    Back in Oz ..

No Helmet .. get a fine and have to leave the bike where it is until you return with a helmet.

Drunk driving ... go straight to the cop shop .. do not pass go .. do not collect $200 .. cannot drive again.

    Just wondering .... ?????

    :o

  2. Hi all

I'e seen return tickets to Sydney Australia advertised for around 11000 to 16000 Baht but have never bought an air ticket in Thailand before.

Can anyone give me a "ball park figure" of the extra taxes on the above prices?

I guessing the total price might be around 20,000 to 25,000 ... but I'm just guessing ! ..anyone have more accurate info?

    Thanks

    :o

  3. Hi all

    1. I have a work permit valid till July 6th.

    2. My visa was extended with the WP till July 6th.

    3. This was done at the Korat Immigration Office.

4.I am leaving my teaching job on March 31st.

    5. I told the Immigration Officer at Korat I will finish job on March 31st.

    6. I asked him "When I hand in my Work Permit on April 1st (it's not a joke !) .. do I have 7 days to leave the country?"

    7. He said "No" .. I can stay until July 6th.

    8. I said " I thought I had 7 days to get out after I hand in my WP if my visa extension was based on a WP"

    9. Again .. he said "No" .. you can stay until July 6th"

    10. I said .. "Are you sure?"

    11. He said "Yes"

Now the BIG question ... "Who is right" ... "Me or him?"

Do I do a Lao vsa run for a Tourist visa after I hand in my Wp? ... or can I stay till July 6th?

    HELLLLLLPPPPPPP !!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks

  4. Its new for me , that Thaksin and his wife are Thai nations .....instead of nationals ..... :o

Think its a poor written article , but is it true ?

I think it's a poorly written article. but is it true? .... Hmmm? .. a case of the pot calling the kettle black?

Sorry, I'm just getting a little tired of the pedantic "spell checkers" on this site. Time to dish out a little of their own medicine.

  5. Before telling the world your Thai boss doesn't respect you, it might be worth taking a moment to consider why not.

I've seen many a foreigner in Thailand wash the respect they were given down the drain by behaving in a manner that could only destroy the respect they thought theirs by right of being a westerner in Thailand.

Just because you can't see/understand the rules does not mean there are no rules.

Before telling the world your Thai boss doesn't respect you, it might be worth taking a moment to consider why not

Because she is my mother-in-law. Duughh

I thought he was "asking" ... "why not" ???? .... Duughh .. whatever that means.

NB .. for more intelligent discussion .. please go to Ajarn.com. (Dr PatPooo not invited)

  6. Many expats i see, seem to go to great lengths to constantly show themselves as being more than just a tourist.

Some use Thai language in situations where it's not necessary. For example, i've seen expats in banks trying to explain something in Thai (and failing), when it seems that the bank teller's command of English is somewhat better than theirs in Thai.

Another instance of trying to prove one has settled in Thailand is in the ordering of the spiciest food. Not that i question that the expat in question doesn't enjoy hot food, but there seems to be an element of pride in being able to stomach what the locals do.

It sometimes even seems like the tourists themselves are doing anything to avoid the tag. Some frequent travellers to Thailand are a bit like wannabe expats, and try to convince you they really are the genuine article.

Meeting with other expats i find there can be an underlying current of competition as to who speaks the most Thai, eats the spiciest food, knows the most about Thai people, and so on...

So just why is it expats are so keen to distance themselves from being a tourist. And why the need to prove it every time they step outside the front door? Or have i got it round the wrong way? Perhaps it's not so much a case of not wanting to be a tourist, but more like just trying to fit in. What do you think?

What you are describing above are "wanke_rs". The handfull of farangs I socialize with don't seem to be like that. They are just ordinary Joes going about thier business with out the need to "prove" anything.

  7. Over the last couple of days here in Phuket, I've seen a a few foreign husbands speaking Thai to their kids.

I really don't see any reason for this as they should be speaking to them in their mother

    tongue so the kids

can be bilingual. Anyone have any idea why it is preferable to speak Thai to yo

ur kids when you are not Thai?

I would think that most parents would want their kids to be bilingual and speak

    each native language like a

native. I would certainly not like my kids speaking Thai like myself, nor would

    I want them speaking English

like my wife. I'm not saying it's either good nor bad, but just trying to understand why the native tongue isn't used.

P.S. Not sure why the formatting turned out like it did, but I guess the forum software doesn't like my browser.

Lets put the situation in another country and look at it.

    1. We are in Australia, a Greek immigrant is speaking English to his Australian born kid .. do you think thats OK .. my guess is that you do.

Whats this prove? ,,, that you are a facist pig. "When in Rome " etc etc. Whats wrong with speaking the national language of the country of you choose to live in? .. nothing .. in fact it should be encouraged. All you fat, sweaty, balding Jomtien Cowboys please take note.

  8. I stated over 3 weeks ago on Ajarn that I would take on the job of "resurrecting" TEFL Watch" into a new and better version.

Well I have worked hard over the last 3 weeks doing just that.I finally finished the site yesterday .. the same day That I received an email from TEFL Watch telling me they have tossed their database to a new owner! .. what a slap in the face!

Never mind .. the new owners site just appears to be an off the shelf script with the old TEFL Watch database dropped into it. No real effort has gone into the site .. which leads me to think that trend will continue into the future.

If you compare it with my new site "Thai EFL Watch" http://thaieflwatch.rahost.org .. I think you will see the amount of effort that's been put into it.

The main difference with "Thai EFL Watch" is that i'ts attempting to be more fair and balanced.. wheras the old TEFL Watch was mostly orientated to the negative...so at "Thai EFL Watch we also have the "Hall of Fame" for "good"schools.

  9. Hi all

Moving to Pattaya next week, starting a new job! believe it or not I'm the only farang that hasn't been there yet ! .. does anyone know if there is a luggage room at the Bus Station or anywhere nearby where I can leave my stuff while I run around looking for an Apartment?

If not I guess the only option is to get a hotel for a day .. but I'm a bit tight on funds (last employer screwed me on my final wage!)

    Thanks :o
