  1. I was never satisfied with the choice of furniture in Samui, to massive and traditional style for me. The more modern things are mostly low quality and most things I liked in the catalogs have been sold out , "cannot order", they wanted to get rid of the old things the had in stock for a long time or they wanted to charge me double of the listed catalog price (farang price). Also forget about Suratthani, ihmo worse than Samui, I did a useless trip there. I went to Bangkok to find stuff which I like. So my point is, I would also advise you to just bring what you have.

Sorry about the little rant about my furniture shopping in the south ;) I am sure some (many?) people are happy with the local choice.

  2. Please note the embassy in Hanoi moved beginning of this month.

When you search Google Maps for "Thai embassy Hanoi" it should show you the updated address already.

Please note there are two entrances to the building, only one of them is open, if your one is closed just walk around the corner to the other road. The closed one also got a guard, but he had no idea when I asked him for the Thai embassy ;)

If you use the address in the below document, it will (should) get you to the right way anyhow. Just in case you use the position on google maps you may end up at the wrong side, just like me. I hope they later will install a sign there showing the right way.

  3. Traffic sure is heavy at times on Samui and as a pedestrain it's not always fun crossing the roads in certain areas on Samui.

Maybe it's time for a few well placed pedestrian bridges as the ones in Bangkok? smile.png

Actually i love those bridges in Bangkok as they let us cross the roads safely, instead of having fingers crossed and pray to live another day.

Actually I hate to climb up those, in the heat and pollution. ;) Well, anyhow its probably still better than getting killed in traffic.

  4. Bangrak, Junction of airport rd, by fresh market. Every evening from about 5pm-7pm, all the shoppers arriving after work, and badly parking their pick up trucks. Often causes chaos, and traffic jams.

oops - I forgot. They also have a 'market/walking street' on The Green on Wednesday and Saturday (?). This is on the corner of that junction opposite the wet market.

    Yes, also on Saturdays.

  5. Riding in a back of a pickup is not so bad, thousands of happy people do it with no problem facepalm.gif

Had a friend get pulled over for no seat belt. But for the tourists or school kids in the back of a truck it’s OK. Life’s cheap.. coffee1.gif

oh and buses have seat belts in western countries? I think not in most of them....coffee1.gif .... good try at Thai bashing....

(Long distance) Buses in all EU countries need to have seat belts since 2006. (Not for local buses in and around cities)

  6. Over priced bloody rubbish. It's not furniture just cheap partical board crap that is lucky to Last two weeks.

I think many of the local shops in Thailand have even worse quality. I am happy there is Ikea now in Thailand. What a great selection of furniture.

Yes they have some really (too) cheap products/low quality but you can also find many things there which are of a high standard. I have some Ikea products for over 30 years already and they are still fine.

And, it strucks me that last year the price has risen by more than 25%.

It is easy comparable with there website for example in the Netherlands, there is a V.A.T of 21% but in Thailand only 7%, many product now are more expansive then in The Netherlands.

Previously I still wanted to buy, but today I come no more.

And yes, there headoffice is in the Netherlands, ofcourse for tax reasons.

Once I complained about there products, I bought in Thailand, in the Netherlands, but they reffered me back to Thailand.

And what kind of answer do you expect to get in Thailand?

Many products have high import charges by customs when bringing them into Thailand.

  8. At a friends business location she receives plenty of mail which is not for her. Its mostly for people around there, but often also completely wrong, last week even a letter from Singapore with a Phuket receivers address arrived there. My friend usually doesn´t bother, she says its not her duty to be responsible for correct mail delivery.

Maybe there are more locations like that, some maybe receive the mail which you miss.

  9. I think you will pay 1500 baht minimum...? That is a guess from a vague memory of another thread.

I find the best route is via the new bridge, which crosses the Tapei river but that is my preference only, it cuts out most of Surat town.

Traffic once out of Surat is not bad at all.

I would recommend that route too, just not sure how tell it to the taxi driver.

Even not travelling from the airport to donsak a lot actually I discovered it already when driving on my own, but I was suprised that many buses and vans are not using it yet. Many seem to prefer to go thru the city, even they don´t have a stop on the way, probably its just what they are used too.

Hey CaptainS, how do you feel about the timeline? You think I can get it done in the time allowed? Is an hour door-to-door my best-case scenario considering no traffic and a competent/aggressive taxi driver?

I think you will need luck to make it. I don´t know about the taxi situation at Suratthani Airport, even considering you get a taxi right away its definitely a tight schedule.

Try to get out of the plane as fast as possible. I think in Suratthani you can often leave the plane in the front and in the back as well, but no guarantee on that ;)

  11. Actually I like to enjoy movies in my own language, while Thai and also English is available on DVDs, my language isn´t. Would be great to use a streaming service like Netflix etc.

For example I have an account with Amazon Instant Video, a great service, I really enjoy it in my country, but as soon as I travel abroad I can´t use it anymore, they are blocking foreign IP addresses. I am paying for it but still cant use it, how stupid. I think those industries are digging their own grave.
