  1. OK, just ordered the sour cream and this Saturday we have Perogies as a special at the Bistro - served on a bed of Sauerkraut with crispy bacon ... will make about 14 Portions ... anyone interested please note - here you'll find the details where etc.. details

    John

:D WOW! That sounds great! Would love to come with my family of five....but we are moving houses on saturday!! We have been here for a month, and I have made perogies once so far...we don't normally serve ours with sauerkraut, either boiled, tossed with butter served w/ sour cream and bacon bits, or my favorite, but very fattening, mix with a cream and dill sause. My husbands family is Ukrainian, and this is how baba taught me.

If you planned a 'perogie night' like once a month, you could plan on our family of five...couldn't find directions to The Bistro...cottage cheese are my husbands favorite, but not everyone likes them, ---how about the small (meat less ofcourse) cabbage rolls baked in cream, onions and dill?? boy we could go all out...the waist line could only afford it once a month though... :o

  2. I started the topic 'which canadian food items you can get here' I agree that

Probably helps if you have visited the country before you decide to move here

unfortunately, jobs, and work transfers don't always allow the time for 'visiting' a new country before you move there.

This is why I rely on the help of strangers in forums like these. I have learned so much and appreciate the time and effort these 'strangers' have given to help answer my questions.

From what I have learned, I can find just about anything in Bangkok that I will need! This is great! I was just more concerned for the changes in the first couple of months that my children will endure! I now understand that there should be no problem.

I was just concerned for my family as I'm sure you were too,

    with bringing your

child´s favourite food here and filled half the container with it (ok, only a biiiig a cardboard box ;O))
  3. I peel my old bananas and put them in 3 to a bag, then throw them in the freezer. They are great for making banana muffins, or banana bread. (defrost them first, ofcourse!!)

You can even throw them in the blender (still frozen) to add flavor to your smoothies with the other fruit. Or add to icecream and blend with a squirt of chocolate for a banana/chocolate milkshake! (yummy)

  4. 7,500B for trained (agency) Thai nanny, 4 days off per month. Agency keeps one month of their wages as security guarantee.

2,700 - 3,500B for Laos house staff. No assigned days off. They pretty much just folow the family work patterns. (Up to you whether you register them for work or not. Suggest one does. :D )

    Soundman. :o

Sorry, but what is 'Laoshouse staff' ???

House staff of Laos nationality. :D

    :D LOL ok, thanks!!!!

  6. That is ridiculous.

We pay 7000 for live in with 2 days off per month.

She does everything for this, even cooking and gardening, washing, care of the kids etc. No set rules what to do and not to do, she is a jack of all trades and does whatever needs to be done on that particular day.

For a guideline, before coming to us, she worked for a well off Thai family and was paid 6000b for the previous 4 years.

This is an excellent maid/nanny, you could not get better.

By paying more, you do not guarantee getting anyone better. Last year we went through several that were next to useless and were paid between 6 and 8000.

Best bet is to offer around 5000 for first month and see how well she works. If excellent work then tell her you will raise it to 6000 for 6 months and then 7000 for balance etc if still doing really good job.

We are a family of 4 also with young children, so workload is more than with all kids at school etc.

This is in Bangkok also, cheaper in the country areas still.

No bonus at songkran, but for new years it is normally a full months pay as bonus. This can be arranged for the thai new year instead of the normal new year if suits.

Thanks for the info. very appreciated. The guy from my husbands work is currently paying her 11,000 bahts, and he's a single guy. We had said that we wouldn't pay her more, until we saw how she works! From what I have read, he is really over-paying.... is it fair to say she can come work for us but at a lower rate until the trial period is over?? The maid approached her current employer and had asked him to see if the family replacing him would consider hiring her on as a full-time live in maid. (Probably only for a year or so as she is getting married next year!!!) This guy thinks we should pay her more since there are 5 of us, and was only one of him!

  7. It might help if you state what you are paying your maid then use the responses to ascertain if you are paying the going rate.

ok, well, 11,000 bhats per month. Live in, 6 days a week. Keeping house, laundry, ironing, cooking a few meals a week, the odd child care(like twice a month, or so), but my kids are all in school. But there are 5 of us in the family.

My kids and I are actually just moving to Bangkok in a few months, my husband is already there, and has been asked by a guy at work (who is leaving the country) if we wanted to hire his maid. He currently is paying her11,000 bahts/month. Just wanted to know if that was fair or not.

  8. search function might prove useful about now!

I have but all the info seems to be from 2006 or later, just thought that prices would have gone up!

Sorry I meant 2006 or earlier!!!!

  9. :o:D Could someone please tell me what the average fees are for a live-in maid??

Seems like there is no set price, and we would like to know if we are paying the normal expected price, or if we are being cheap!!

Any info on this topic is greatly appreciated!!

    Thanks

  10. If anything, the one thing you want to bring here is good Alberta beef! But it's debatable if they'll let you in with that...

I never even thought.... we sure will miss that!!! Is the beef that bad in Thailand?? Can anyone think of anything else that is a 'can't live with out' or even just a nice to have for kids, just until we get settled and know where to buy stuff?? I'm so nervious, I've even wondered about stuff like coffee! (Ya, stupid I know, just can't live without it!!! )

  11. Hi everyone,

Just found out my family and I are moving from Alberta, Canada to Bangkok in 3 months. My 3 children are not really picky eaters, but tend to stay away from 'new', unfamiliar foods. I was just wondering if you could help me compile a list of some stuff that is not available or very hard to find in Bangkok, so I could bring some extras to get thru the first couple months. PLEASE!!! I've heard stuff like Cheeze Whiz, is hard to find! How about good old Kraft dinner, or peanut butter, or kids cereals?? I have never been to Thailand, and won't be until we move so i could use all the help I can get.

    Thanks so much!!!

  14. I am looking for a very good, original Bortsch recipe, russian style.

    Thanks foryour help!

    Gerd

This is an old family 'original' recipie, but it's Ukrainian!! I hope it still helps. We do make changes from time to time depending on what is on hand!!

    Brandie

    Borsch

10 young beets, stalks and leaves

8 cups water or chicken broth (broth is better!!)

small handful of dill weed leaves

    1/2 cup fresh peas

    8 young carrotts, diced

    6 new potatoes, cubed

    2 tsp. salt

    garlic to taste

1cup or more sour cream, depending on taste

Scrub beets thoroughly, do not peel.

Dice beets and stalks, add water(broth), salt, garlic, onions and dill.

    Boil for 10 - 15 mins.

Add cut up leaves, peas and carrots, boil for 10-15 mins more.

Add potatoes, boil until all veggies are tender.

Do not over cook. Add more water if too thick.

Last of all add sour cream.

    * We add our own sour cream once we have our own bowl of soup.

Each person likes a different amount!!
