BANGKOK (NNT) - Financial Institutions expressed readiness to comply with measures to reduce household debt that is set to begin next year.

The Bank of Thailand will commence with persistent debt (PD) for revolving personal loans as part of the household debt settlement plan and will encourage performing loan debtors to take part in the scheme. Participants would be able to receive an annual interest rate of no more than 15%, compared to the current 25% ceiling rate for personal loan products.

PD clients will be categorized into general and severe groups. Individuals considered to be in General PD are those who have been in debt consecutively for three years, while severe PD borrowers are those who are in debt consecutively for five years, with a minimum monthly income of 20,000 baht if using a bank or 10,000 baht for non-bank users. The measures are set to go into effect on April 1, 2024.

Following the announcement from the central bank, Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) managing director Chatchai Sirilai stated that BAAC is ready to help its clients relieve their financial burden in accordance with the central bank’s regulations. He emphasized that the bank’s 4.3 million customers are mostly PD borrowers who are in elderly and vulnerable groups, stressing that the banks want to get them out of debt as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Personal Loan Club Vice-President Athip Sinpagekan stated that its non-bank members are ready to comply with the measures and will encourage their clients to participate in the PD plan. Payong Srivanich, Chairman of the Thai Bankers’ Association, affirmed that commercial banks will comply with PD measures as well.

BOT Deputy Governor Ronadol Numnonda added that the central bank would approach loan operators and the rest of the co-operatives to join the household debt resolution program as well. Currently, the central bank is in charge of approximately 70% of total household debt.

I have a nice silver ring that's on the large size and can easily slip off my finger, so need it reduced. Have asked in jewellry shops in malls, but either they don't know or want to send it somewhere. Anyone know of a shop that does it on the premises?

Try GEM GALLERY ... Not sure of address BUT they are nationwide sales/custom-made/gemologists etal. Haven't been to PATTAYA recently but think they are near edge of town. They do excellent work!!!

I remember the Great flood of 2011 NOT fondly.

Downstairs of the house and garden under metres of filthy smelling water for months.

Moved what we could upstairs but still a lot of damage to built in furniture, garden 90% dead.

Only transport in or out of the property by boat (until we finally abandoned and went to our condo).

I think we got B20,000 compensation for hundreds of thousands of baht in damages.

As I recall it was brought on by 3 consecutive tropical storms (which had been typhoons before making land fall) then the decision to open the flood gates upstream and let us in Pathum Thani cop it.

    Hopefully not again !

I believe it may have been 6 Typhoons over the China Sea in some 3-4 weeks in that year !

ALL the five main northern TH rivers [which merge at NAKHON SAWAN] were in full flood. I was there when the then earthen levee walls collapsed under the sheer weight of water AND Nakhon Sawan CBD was inundated with floodwaters more than chest deep [in central NS ... much deeper elsewhere]. I was assisting in the flood rescue near Big C up to my chest in floodwater ...

The new ALL CONCRETE levee walls built since that disaster should help prevent this from ever happening again in NS ... BUT who knows for sure ???

I believe the floodwaters covered some 70000 sq km AND sat there for 3 months !!! [Water as far as the eye could see] ...

  4. Any "IDIOT TOURIST" who travels ANYWHERE [in the world] WITHOUT appropriate Travel/Medical Insurance deserves what he/she gets !!!.

It is a large [unnecessary] drain on the Thai medical/hospital financial budget and is also a very foolish decision by the said "IDIOT TOURIST" ...

NB: There are on average 25000 Australian tourists just in PHUKET ; on any given day [from my own research; and on ThaiVisa]

AND that is just from my country AND only ONE TH destination ???

Many countries will NOT issue a VISA unless you have Travel/Medical Insurance in place.

I have been visiting Thailand BOTH as a tourist and International Volunteer worker for the past 16 years AND would NEVER travel without Travel/Medical Insurance. It is just not worth the RISK !!!

  5. I rent an older 2 level house near NAKHON SAWAN from a [now] relative ["AUNTY" by marriage] and used to pay 1 month/1month BUT then asked about paying yearly. I was immediately offered 2 months for FREE [each year] and have been doing that for past 3 years ... no problems. But "FAMILY" not "Landlord" so maybe different ???

They get their rent [Lump Sum] every JANUARY and I SAVE ... SO everybody happy.

Have recently had offer to buy the property AND am considering it seriously as a large block with main road frontage [but house SET-BACK 30+ metres]. Then my NEW immediate family would own 5 adjoining blocks. Good for the family and good for the village.

  6. Next thing we will have compulsory "BREATH TESTING" before being allowed to board ??? These drunken IDIOTS are a disgrace to ALL other Aussies ... and I am an AUSSIE ... who has been injured in 5 MVA's by FOUR of these IDIOTS ... and 1 prescription DRUG ADDICT ... and now have to live on a Disability Pension [lost 2 cars and my job] because of their DRUNKEN STUPIDITY !!!

LOCK them up [for a minimum 1-5 year term AND ban them from ever FLYING again !!!

I have no time for ALCHOHOLICS !!!

IF you must drink ... DRINK RESPONSIBLY!

  7. Try mixing PLASTER OF PARIS and CASTER SUGAR together [in equal quantities] DRY ... ok DO NOT MIX WITH WATER !!!

Place in a large container OR several smaller containers and leave near the problem location. ALSO leave a large container of WATER close by [maybe one metre away] ...

The rats love the sugar and don't detect the plaster till things start to "warm up" [as plaster sets]. Then they rush for a drink and compound the problem.

Sets like cement AND is non-toxic to other animals [as rat poisons usually are] ...

Worked a treat here in AU when the massive mice PLAGUES of several years ago infested the AU wheat silos. Couldn't use rat poison baits due to FOOD PRODUCT storage AND there were just too many of them ... BUT not for long.

A further benefit is that with this affordable method there are no dead smelly rats in your ceiling spaces [or wherever] just some nice solid rodent "STATUES" !!!

NB: I have used this method very successfully myself with both rats and mice infestations.

  8. A GREAT idea [AND long overdue] ...

Also MANDATORY Drug and Alcohol TESTING [DAILY] as has been introduced in some Bus Companies here in Australia would certainly help.

Positive test FIRST time [not allowed to drive for 24 hours] Positive test second time ... INSTANT DISMISSAL !!!!

AND; of course; regular Driver Training and proper Licensing and heavy vehicle qualifications ...

AND FINALLY ... Going downhill in LOW GEAR [NOT just relying on your BRAKES ie very quickly [repeated braking] = LOW air = NO BRAKES !!!] would prevent many of these on-going regular/repeated disasters AND consequent loss of innocent lives.

I am a bus/coach driver [with an OPEN Bus/Coach HC Licence for both NSW and QLD] here in Australia; with several years experience in MOUNTAIN driving; AND [as a frequent visitor to TH since 2001] have unfortunately witnessed some of these [largely preventable] disasters.

  9. WHY anybody would carry ANY large amounts of CASH ... foreign or otherwise ... [not safely secured] is beyond my comprehension ... in TH or any other country ???

PS: Some years ago I [accidentally] left a wallet [one of several such items I was carrying] in the seat pocket on an AirAsia flight into BKK AND it was found and returned to me in less than 1 HOUR. I hadn't missed it until after I had been through Customs AND Immigration ... and thought it was GONE for sure !!!

It contained some cash and personal papers etc. AND was returned INTACT !!!

I gave each of the the TH staff a small reward [even though they initially refused to accept it] as I was so grateful to get my personal papers back.

SO my faith in human nature was restored AND I am now married to a wonderful THAI lady 06april2013

  10. My new Thai wife's family is from Nakhon Sawan. Her parents are both deceased now many years BUT just before SONGKRAN this year her sister [who lives just next door] came to collect PAPA ???

I thought this very strange as he had been deceased a long time ???

But no ... my wife went into the house and came back with PAPA in a nice brass funeral URN !!! Her sister then went next door and returned with a similar URN [from her house] with MAMA inside ... and they were then taken to the temple on the auspicious day.

  11. You haven't indicated what type of goods you are wanting to send ???

"HOME-MADE" foodstuffs of ANY kind to Australia are a "NO NO". They will be seized by AU Quarantine Service AND destroyed. However commercially produced AND packed items are usually okay BUT products containing any meat/fish/bird/feather products are PROHIBITED IMPORTS into AU [including any items containing EGGS and/or egg products including egg shells]. The fines are very severe for attempting to bring any such items into AU.

Any UNTREATED wooden products will also be seized ... BUT in certain circumstances you can arrange to have them FUMIGATED at a reasonable cost. I think the minimum is around AUD $30.

ACQIS has also refused import of any item or product made from ELEPHANT DUNG PAPER for a number of years now and is still not relenting on this decision. These items are admitted into most other countries including USA but not AU.

Personal items [ie clothing; costume jewellery; etc] and/or souvenirs/gifts for family and friends are ok provided they are less than AUD $1000.00 in value and/or not a "commercial" quantity [usually less than 50 items [of any one type] ... ok

IF uncertain you can call ACQIS [Australian Customs and Quarantine Inspection Service] in AU [search their WEBSITE on the net] ...

By far the cheapest way to send any goods is by SEA MAIL through ThaiPost BUT can take around 12 weeks to arrive. I have done this repeatedly over the past 13 years from BKK. Other TH regional ThaiPost centres take longer but I have done on several occasions [Chiang Mai; Nakhon Sawan].

Any other methods are much more expensive BUT if your financial circumstances or budget are not a problem [or you have a set delivery date] then pick what is most convenient from your TH location ...

GOOD LUCK ... ThaiPost is very reliable to AU and all my items seem to arrive ok since 2001.

  12. The part of the equation I fear you're missing is PayPal's popular conversion rates to THB

(I believe they're popular with PayPal)

    .

YES ... I'm aware of Paypal's conversion rate which is around 4% [as are virtually all local and OS BANK's conversion Fees] BUT when you take into account NO local bank fees [in your country] and/or TH ATM fees [150 THB ... rumored to be going to 180 THB soon per withdrawal] ... I'm almost always ahead as I save more than AUD 40.00+ each month; on average; in additional bank fees and/or International Transaction FEES ...
