I have used this Permedan product on and off over the last 3 years. For the most part it works ok but I think its too expensive for large applications and you can buy other products with permethrin(spelling?) cheaper.

Secondly and the main reason we stopped using it is my Thai wife hates the smell,,,,,,,,,,ads say it is "odorless",,,,,,,but it does leave a lingering ODOR the wife hates

I suggest that you contact 'Central Alarms', they are situated near GDL pool shop on the Phetkasem road over the flyover travelling south out of HH. We have used them for a couple of systems, including ' garden beam systems' and have found them to be very competent and sensibly priced. They can be contacted on 083687147.

And be aware that farangs are first in line to scam you. Just because you are from the same part of the world doesn't mean diddly.

Many brokers position themselves as "a civilized bloke who takes care of his countrymen so the evil thais won't scam you out" only to be the scammer in the first place. Many properties have beeen built without landownership, permits and what not and the sellers just walk away when shit go bad. Leaving the customers with a shitpile of a demolished house they need to pay to get removed from the plot or else.

Do the math on rents and you will see that most often it will be your grandchildren that will reap the benefits of all your work in renting houses. If the houses hasnt rotted away during those 30 years that is.

If you choose to build new you will need to know what you are building and be on site like a hawk to supervise everyting. You will need to become an armchair engineer or hire an independet contractor that does the supering for you.

Land titles, land ownership, not getting a burst bubble in landspeculations and so on are also headaches that need to be solved.

@ india: I have informed myself regarding condos. My original plan was to buy 2 condos here earlier this year and rent out. Fact is: as a foreigner you CAN buy a condo in your own name - no need for a Thai partner and no need to set up a company. The catch is: every condo project has a "quota" of condos it may sell to foreigners. Max. 49% of the entire project (or was it condos?) can be owned by foreigners, the remaining 51% for - yes, you guessed it - Thai nationals.

You can rent to anybody you want to - short term or long term and you can sell any time you want to. The only real issue you will have when you sell is: whether you can sell to either a foreigner or a Thai - or only to a Thai? This will depend on the quote of foreign owned condos at that particular time (maybe the law will have changed my then...).

Obviously the prices vary depending on where you want to buy, city/town, sea view/no sea view, proximity to beach/public transport, etc.

Personally, and I want to emphasize here that I am no expert on this topic, it alarms me to see the number of houses and condos "for sale" or "for rent" - sometimes for many, many months on the market without buyers or tennants AND more houses and condos still being built. I just cannot help but think that the property market here might have reached its peak.

A good Thai friend ouf ours had us visit his house In Bangkok. I was wondering why the big door frames and furniture was discoloured.

Termites. They have eaten through doorframes , bookshelves,bannisters, underside of the roof outside, bedframes.

I believe the discoloration is from some acid the termites excrete after eating up the wood. You could walk around the house and knock on things and they all sounder hollow. They had also chewed through gypsum in the garage to get inside through pipes leading inside the house.

SO, beware if you start seeing discoloration in some wood around the house and knock here and there to see if anything sounds hollow.

We have a constant come and go of tiny red ants that come inside the house. The usually try and find open packages of food in the cupboards. The also feed on all the bugs that have died inside the ceiling lamp covers. In a few days I will place a few bowls of a sugary mixture around the house and try and see where the nests are when they head back that way. It will be their last meal.

Ants have chewed up concrete and gypsum here as well, get rid of them before they do any further damage to the concrete. You may just see tiny holes on the outside but the uprights may very well be hollow inside now or soon.

My wife says she had the whole underside of the concrete slab sprayed with some anti-termite chemical. Haven't seen a termite, except for the ones with wings that come from somewhere else at night.

I live in the north. We have a concrete and block first floor and a wood second floor. The house is about 6 years old and we have had no termite problems. We use no insecticides at all. Our neighbors have similar constructions and use no insecticide and have no problems either. One important thing is to keep your wood dry. Occasionally a house will get some termites and the correction is to remove the infested wood and replace it.....doesn't happen very often and not that big of a deal. This happened at my mother in law's house a few years back. There was a wooden partition built on the ground floor one end of which connected to the exterior wall on the side of the house where rain water gets blown against the wall....so they 1. had wood on the first floor and 2. didn't keep their wood dry.....but in a couple of days the bad wood was removed and new wood put in....no big deal. I've never heard of a house around here that had a major infestation with widespread damage....around here it is not a big issue.

I live in the north too and our termites are VERY healthy. The only wood in our house is the window and door frames, so no big problem there. After I had my garage/workshop built, the workers took the scaffolds and forms from the concrete work and piled them all against my block fence. Three years later all that is left is a few piles of saw dust. UNBELIEVABLE!

"Public Health Minister Chaiya Sasomsab ordered a study on information of electronic cigarettes to find measures to prevent importing e-cigarettes to Thailand because existing law doesn't cover the new product.

The e- cigarette consists of a cartridge, an atomizer, and a rechargeable battery. It doesn't contain tobacco but it has nicotine, propylene glycol, a chemical used in a fog machine, and fruity taste. Each cartridge is the equivalent of 15 conventional cigarettes.

The public health minister said that although e-cigarettes don't emit smoke, they pose harm to smokers with the level of nicotine higher than found in conventional cigarettes.

He ordered the Food and Drug Administration to conduct a study of e-cigarettes and to discuss with agencies concerned to draw out preventive measures.

Mr. Chaiya said the target group of this new product is..."

I am just pointing out the dangers associated with the E-cigs.

E-cigs contain 15 times the nicotine level of normal cigarettes. The idea being they get you completely addicted to this product to a point you can't give them up!

It's an evil scam and governments around the world are in the process of banning e-cigs.

Why not try patches or gum or lozenge or many other aids available.

The other thing they trap you with is the price, they are very very expensive and they automatically take money from your credit card each month for supply.

Trying to stop them is nearly impossible and people that have fallen for this scam have to cancel their credit cards!

Good luck with giving up smoking.

And they are not expensive as this guy suggests they cost around 850 to 950 bht with 10 refills. On 3 occasions, I had uninvited guests in my yard trying to break into my house. The third time they came with what looked like machetes. One of my neighbors who had a gun helped out by shooting at the men from her balcony (true) as I barricaded myself indoors yelling at the men. She missed unfortunately. I live in a fully detached house in Bangkok. Any door or window alarms I can buy somewhere in Bangkok. Something a bit decent quality 1000 Baht or 2000 Baht?

I can get you the sort of alarm you are looking for, either for the whole house ie windows doors roof yard.and smoke alarm also wireless this version is about 20,000 Baht with Tel Dial system no wires all wireless. Or the simple version Infra red room sensor with inside Siren and Also outdoor siren Keypad and remote entry turn on turn off, for 3500 Baht.
