Bangkok Urges Work from Home Amid Severe Air Pollution Threat
whitfield replied to webfact's topic in Bangkok News
The pollution at this time of year comes mostly from China, but soon it will be home grown with the burning season in Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. It's the same every year, but getting worse. The farmers need tractors to plough in the stubble instead of burning, but the government prefers submarines. For the cost of 3 Chinese submarines they could buy 30,000 tractors, 3 for every Tambon. They could rent them out and even get a small return. Instead of platitudes about working from home the government has the means to change it, and it's time they looked after their people instead of their egos.- 40 replies

Thailand issues four major announcements on new visa measures
whitfield replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
I went to Immigration the other day and they asked why I only kept 400,000 in my account. I told them that we don't want to bring in more money than we need because they are going to tax us. The girl looked at ,e with eyebrows raised and said, "How?" She had no clue. If it ever did happen that Immigration needed to sign off a tax return or similar, you can bet your life that the only thing that would change would be the "Agent's Fee". -

New Tax Rules for Expats in Thailand Spark Concern
whitfield replied to webfact's topic in Thailand News
Too many of these articles promoted by Tax "Experts". The emphasis is on earned income. So there are many loopholes, like inheritance, selling of a property, transfer money to wife etc. Most pensions are taxed in home country so only the difference if any to pay. I think the struggle to collect the tax will outweigh the gains. We'll see, but remember it's income, not capital. -

Why on earth do they want to repatriate the body. One family member fly out to attend the cremation, then fly back with the ashes. You're supposed to get permission but if you put them in a wooden box in your luggage no-one will care. Have a big memorial service back home. RIP -

When you have to buy your job you start in debt. -
So pay for your big purchases like school fees by direct transfer. Pay by credit card wherever you can, like Revolut. Send your day to day living expenses to the gf. It won't be possible for Thailand to demand 800k in the bank and then take 20%. There'll be a lot more discussion before any of this actually happens.

Everyone knows it comes from crop burning across SE Asia. Why do they burn? Because they don't own tractors to turn the soil over, so burning is the cheapest way. Now for the cost of 3 submarines you could buy 28,000 tractors, enough for three in every agricultural tambon. You could rent them out for a nominal fee and over time the investment would pay for itself. Immediately the nation would see an improvement in health. But of course defense of the realm must take priority over the nation's health.
