I'd stay away from Ali Baba on Le Thanh Ton...the place was worthless in 2006...go up the street to the Lotteria and get a burger and chips instead...
nice rendang at the malaysian restaurant on Mac Dinh Chi in district 1 across the street from the City View apartments...
Alibaba hasn't been located on Le Thanh Ton for several years. That location is now an A&EM Hotel. Their new location is on Mac Thi Boi. Was OK before, but it's not anymore.
I tried going to Saigon Indian, but the staff wouldn't even come over to seat my wife and I, so we left. Will have to give it another shot.
I prefer Tandoor. The owner is always there and will make special orders that aren't on the menu if you ask him. Always busy too with Indian customers.

"Ah, guys....It's not Saigon for quite a while now...it's Ho Chi Minh City. Not that I care, but you won't win any prizes with the locals by still calling it Saigon."
Not sure where you get your information, but many of the locals do still call it Saigon.
"If I travel to Saigon...
Is a taxi the only way to travel from the airport to my hotel in the middle of the city?
I'd rather take a bus... as taxis may just try to cheat me and/or take me to another hotel."
The 152 bus will take you to D1 (Pham Ngu Lao) for around 50,000VND.

No, you can't get a visa on arrival in Vietnam. If you don't want to get a Visa beforehand, you'll need to arrange for a Pre-Approved Visa. You can do this through many travel agencies. I've used this one many times.
of course you get a visa on arrival based on an online application.

You get a Pre-Approved Visa added to your passport. Visa on arrival is not the correct wording. Visa on arrival is what you get in Cambodia. Without the pre-approval letter, you will not be allowed to board your flight to Vietnam.

Mrs. Balbirs is very good.
Himali Cha Cha's isn't very good now. Had dinner with a friend who was Indian and when we asked him what kind of Indian food it was, he said I don't know. It was quite awful.
I still like Rang Mahal the best.

Living in AZ for a few years, salsa came with your tortilla chips. Hot sauce either came in a bottle or in a little bowl like the salsa. I usually ask for hot sauce when my meal comes. Never have asked for Pico de gallo.

I ate there last night. Had the shredded beef taco/chicken enchilada combo plate (295B). Taco was good and the enchi wasn't bad either. Beans were quite tasty, but shredded cheese would have been better than the slab of cheese. Didn't care for the rice and the margarita was just OK. Hardly any customers (was there at 8pm).
Overall, it was good. Not the same as back home, but this is Thailand. And by those standards it was good. I'll be back.

Sounds just like how my process went, but through the US Consulate in HCMC. Biggest hassle is all the paperwork/translation that you have to do.
The conditional status is for her Visa, not her green card. She'll get the green card a few weeks after you arrive.

I've used them. Service was OK. Biz Class seat wasn't as comfortable as Thai. Food wasn't as good either. Still, with the money you can save, I'd fly them again.

For the OP, take a look at these 3 threads and note that you can get the visa invitation online (travel to VN with letter of approval from VN Immigartion obtained through stayinvietnam.com and collect visa on arrival in Hanoi or Saigon airports).
Order and pay for the visa online through stayinvietnam.com and avoid going to the embassy here.

Bun Thit Nuong is my favorite. Be sure to spice it up with a little chili sauce.

Both are available in quite a few supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City (even the tiny 1 room store in our complex). Surprised it's not available in Bangkok.

Passport is required.

Great, Mexican food for gringos
I'm skeptical of any Mexican restaurant named after a place not especially known for good Mexican cuisine, but I wish Mr. Vaughan luck. He has four respectable competitors relatively close by - Mamacita's, Tacos & Salsa, Senor Pico's and Sunrise Tacos. Soon Sukhumvit may have almost as many Mexican eateries as Italian ones
Senor Picos is hardly respectable. If it weren't in Rembrandt, it would have closed a long time ago.

My wife was told to bring her chest x-rays to verify she didn't have tuberculosis. They didn't even look at them.

I would also suggest to consider offering a Sope or Gordita on the menu.... never seen them here as well. Great for lunch or dinner. Might be worth a test, anyway. You would need a supply of masa, in which case you could also offer tamales - something else I haven't seen here, other than the frozen section.
I have to agree with this. You need a niche. Something the other restaurants don't offer. Stand out and be unique. People will come because you have something they cannot get somewhere else.
One niche would be an actual Tex-Mex restaurant. I know, many people think that is what is served here. It is not Tex-Mex. And I should know since I grew up eating it.
What is served here, for the most part, is a very bad version of California-Mex w/ Taco Bell creeping in.
Tacos and Salsa at least produces some decent Mexican food......it is not Tex-Mex, but it is OK.
The first person to open a real Tex-Mex restaurant in Thailand will make a fortune........still waiting.
I would strongly advise you to avoid existing "Mexican restaurant models" in Thailand. The same old rotten thing will not work.
About tomatillo...........I did get some seeds and some did sprout and one even reached maturity (died later because the roots his rock bottom).
It would be nice of have real green enchiladas.
So what's the difference between tex and cal mex? What makes them different from az mex or new mex mex?

Sunrise Tacos about soi 12 and Sukhumvit.Has the most authintic Mexican food in SEA.They opened antother one in The Siam Paragon but never been to it.Let me re state this.
The best Tex-Mex food in SEA.
I ate at the Siam Paragon branch. Had beef burritos. They were terrible. Wouldn't bother to eat there again.
And saying it's the best Tex-Mex in SEA isn't saying much. I'd rather have Taco Bell.

"To qualify as a sponsor, a petitioner who is residing abroad must have a principal residence in the U.S. and intend to maintain that residence for the foreseeable future..."
Sounds like the State Dept needs to update their information. As I said, my wife was granted a Visa and I did not have a principal residence in the USA (had been living overseas for 4 years).
-
The Indochine across the street from the Bong Sen Annex is another good option in that price range.
-
My wife received a CR-1 Visa and I did not have a residence in the USA. So as noted above, it is not necessary to have a residence in order to get the Visa.

"quite often you'll end up in some battered old private car with a driver who doesn't have a clue."
Really?? Never had this happen to me. I always do the same thing as Hanno. Quite simple to get a proper cab at Tan Son Nhut.

I'll be boarding the plan in LAX in about an hour or so. I'll report on the flight afterward...business class...it should be reasonably good.
Well, here's my report. Take-off from LAX was a little late, but on the other hand, arrival at BKK was significantly early. The cabin crew was very efficient, although I wouldn't say they were particularly hospitable...just neutral. The food...well, I'm not the best judge of this because I prefer a more regular down-to-earth menu. This was pretty fancy food, and what little I ate (I tend not to each much while flying) was very good. The flight was particularly smooth. I know most people really like the new seats. I think they're wonderful for sleeping...and most were...but not so wonderful for sitting (for example, I think the lumbar support really doesn't support the lumbar). But, I slept for half the flight, so for that it was wonderful. Not as wonderful as 2007 when I took the non-stop TG from NYC, but still, hard to fault them. B+.
The service on all my flights has always been better BKK-LAX than it is LAX-BKK. The dinner meal on my flight on 5/24 was not good (Teriyaki Salmon). They no longer serve appetizers (used to serve Satays, now they give you a bag of pretzels). No champagne served prior to take off either.

I got the form the other week coming in from Singapore by Sin. Air. Just a one-sided, photocopied A4 sheet with some relatively innocuous questions - do you/have you had headaches, sweating, fever, nausea hallucinations, uncontrollable desire to roll in mud, etc. Plus your seat number, name, address, passport number etc. Handed it to the masked bandits at that pinch-point just before immigration, where they had the body temp cameras too.
Interesting...I saw none of that. I was on the look out for it because I was expecting it.
I flew into BKK on Sunday morning from LAX and there were health officials and thermal imaging cameras at each of the immigration areas.
