  1. There's a need some basic geography lessons.

How does an earthquake 50km off Padang Sumatra propagate a wave that could come anywhere near the coast of Thailand?

    :)

In 2004 the quake reached South America as several oil rigs where going up and down...

Whatever the quake before was a quake but as far as I know some very large blocks fell down into the deep sea....

They spotted during the next few days they were missing! note in 2004!! I think they even had a submarine checking out what happened..

sending a silly warning out about a day after it happened is worse then useless.

I live in Phuket and any quake with Tsunamis will have got here in a few hours max. The first thing I did was to look at times etc and it was clear there COULDN'T be a Tsunami!

Samoa quake would have to cross Indonesia and Thailand... Likely also the Philippines!

The one in Sumatra could have been here in 2 hours...

  3. better safe than sorry, always register YOUR things(money, bank account, vehicules) with your name.

Exactly what he says, only a fool would open a joint account.

This is not the western world, there are some things you just don't do.

It's very easy to get a bank account, currently Siam Commercial Bank are taking all applicants (with no silliness)

    PS

You come here with a multiple entry non-immigrant 'o' visa valid for 1 year (I assume you are over 50 as you talk about retirement), but do a border run every 90 days (very cheap). VISA Cost $150 or £100, no evidence of anything required, you just post your passport off to a Thai office in your country, along with the application form (avalable for download online), a couple of photos and the money. Nothing else at all required for the over 50s (I have this VISA, it actually lasts 15 months if you make the last border run in the last few days of the 1 year).

    No medical

    No police check

    No funds check or proof

You apply for the retirement/married person visa while in Thailand (can take 3 months, usually shorter) during your 1 year stay (but then have to report to local immigration every 90 days). Phone up your local Thai consulate if you don't believe me, they never publish the Visa requirements online for some reason.

    PPS

I believe under Thai inheritance law, your wife gets the contents of your Thai bank account on your death unless you have made out a Thai will saying different.

Ok, sorry to say something different..

MY bankbook is in my name. You never know what will happen!

After 23-26 years of staying here I can say that whatever they tell not all ladies are equal...

What you will want to do depends on your situation but use your brain (sober) if you can...

You can be very happy here and I am even after previous warnings BUT it depends on you to keep the family as much as possible out of your problems (UNLESS necessary) and to make sure that financially and insurance wise you are covered.

NOT a joke as I myself found myself kicked out of the Thai social security (which I used as security) as wife managed to NOT tell me that if you don't pay for 3 months and she changed the payments. NO WARNING!! They kick you out... of the insurance. It wasn't really good but it WOULD cover you for the essentials cheaply. Most of us are 50 and over so if you have an insurance watch it like gold!!

Inheritance wise I have a family here so as far as I am concerned my daughters who are studying in University in Thailand can sort it all out...

  4. Let's face it, if he didn't have those shady telecoms deals, he would not be who he was today. Didn't he start off selling computers or something like that? Anyway, it is very sad to learn that a lot of Thais seem to take his word for everything simply because he is rich.

When around 25 years ago I asked what was available in computer jobs (g) I somehow seem to remember a Mr T. being active in selling used computers to the Thai government... Its a long time ago though...(g) Sorry for asking but did they ever check what he really did all these years before being PM????

  5. True, it's like with so many other things in Thailand. The customers blindly go for the cheapest "product" without thinking, they would rather pay 100 THB for a Windows XP installation and get crap and problems and have to come back then paying 1000 THB for a proper cracked version. We see these customers every day in our shop, and we simply don't want to go to such a low quality level to compete with the Thai shops' prices.

The problem is it's often a lot more than 1,000 THB for a proper legal (cracked? Was that a freudian lapse?) version. Check out the price of Adobe Suite in Thailand. It's over 100,000 - a LOT over. Then remember the same product can be licensed legally in USA for about half the Thai price. Where's the justice in that?

You should know that key-generators and whatever float around FREE. Now I don't want Adobe on my system. Its good software but it isn't what I need!

I use the Bat! for email, and yes its paid for. Comodo antivirus etc (plus some addons I wrote myself).

What I did to 2 years ago was sell them the real stuff, make no profit BUT charge for the install. Worked out to about the same end-result! AND I wasn't responsible for any crap MS put in... Now there are good copies but you have to know whats good...

Imagine the following situation: Real MS windows XP pro. sr2. You have to reinstall it...I found a good copy (I had to as I couldn't locate an sr3 version...). If you reinstall everything from scratch it can take you 2 days or more...

Using a copy sr3 (with real serial number) solved my problem! 2 hours and and everything was working!

  6. I bought a new desktop at Airport Plaza a month back - I was told that it didn't come with an OS or software (just driver disks) - but they will put pirated on for me free If I want, "Is a problem for you?" the kind man asked.

    Yikes, what did you do?

The place where I bought my computer had sold me one that also did not have the OS installed and they took me to a place where that pirate installed the software for 500 baht. It caused damage to my hard drive and I brought it back. After much ado (to put it very mildly), they gave me a new computer that had the authentic OS installed. I think the software caused the damage. But this is face saving Thailand where no self respecting person can be held liable. Now, after two damaged hard drives, most likely caused by pirated software, I'm more than just a wee bit nervous about it all. It's not like refunds are an option here. :)

I very much doubt that if the guy knew what he was doing would have damaged your drive...

Whatever, damaged new drives HAVE warranty. Even in Thailand. What drive did you get?

  7. By the way, Regarding this nigerian scams. Just got in the mail a check for 12,000.00 USD. Thinking to F*** them over and keep them all.

Or maybe they are just hard working scam artist and should I share?

I'll think about it for a while and we'll see...............................

Gosh I must be missing something here.  You have heard about those people that come in to the middle of a  conversation.   Either I did or you did..if you think your going to scam them by keeping a check they sent you...LOL.   THe best thing you could do is deposit it and keep half the money...send the rest back to them....so at least your not a complete idiot......only a half-wit....LOL :):D:D    Let us know the actual amount you end up with after 60days it will be interesting what you learn :D:D:D:D oops!

Well I had YEARS ago a taalk with some of the Nigerians and at that time, ie 23 years ago, I kept them communication via mail but when a Thai tried to interfere after one call they stopped communicating...

Whatever, I heard them speak and it was a beautiful real English accent....

I found at that time one thing out, they need help in getting money out? shit , they OWN a bank...

  8. 6 foreigners arrested in online investment scam

Crime Suppression Division police have arrested four Britons, a Filipino woman and a French man for having allegedly deceiving foreign investors to buy stocks online and cheated them.

Pol Maj Gen Panya Mamen, deputy Central Investigation Bureau commissioner, said the six foreigners were arrested at a house on Soi Thonglor while deceiving foreigners to invest in stock markets through Internet.

Police seized seven desktop computers, six notebook computers and 31 mobile phones from the house.

Information from the seized computers showed that they had deceived the investors to invest over Bt100 million in fake firms.

The foreigners claimed that they were hired by a man identified only as Paul for Bt30,000 to Bt50,000 a month to make phone calls.

    nationlogo.jpg

    -- The Nation 2009/09/19

Interesting that they call it an online scam. The foreigners were paid to make phone calls rather than type emails. Sounds like another typical boiler room to me. Maybe they were using Skype to make the calls. I guess then it would be online.

I would imagine it depends on who analyzes the computers as the software and settings should be still there.

Need any help if the Thais get stuck?? FIRST thing to do is make sure that nothing in the computers used to call out is changed...

We had a group of these conman 4-6 years ago in Patong...

Anyway, I might be able to help but note, I cannot work any more officially...BUT I have extensive experience with computers...

  9. If you are using a REAL copy of windows your system is ALSO wide open.... and WILL be compromised, no matter what firewall or anti virus software you use.

Absolutely false. I have yet to be compromised at home or at work since Windows98. People who take the needed steps to protect themselves and use their heads will more than likely be just fine. In fact out of the many infected machines I've fixed the client was always asking for it with either an un-patched system, a lousy (usually AVG) antivirus, or no firewall.

In a way true as all it says is that in the end its the user who controls the system. What gets put in sw wise to prevent it...

But that's always the case whatever is used....

Doesn't matter if it is a real windows or a fake, the same user will get it BOTH ways. I have seen it happen too often. If you had been in sw support, some users ALWAYS get the problems...

  10. If I could make a business out of fixing people's computers then I'd be very happy.

    Just need customers... :)

I am glad someone else agrees with me. I am sick of all the press blaming pirated software when really it is the user at fault. If pirated software was really so bad then people would actually pay for real software. The fact is that pirated or not the software will install, look, run and feel the same in most cases. The company I work for once bought Symantec EndPoint from a reputable company and that came on copied media (with a stuck on label to look real).

    Ian

    not totally true but almost...

Most of the users, experts or not, get caught. We all have been having silly things happen with the machine...

I have, and believe me I have been using them since we had mainframes with Telex tape input and solid core...

Some things are avoidable: after windows is in: next things to install and that's before verification of serial number and internet:

    install AV and firewall.

Business : its possible but there are too many farangs around doing repairs in their spare time for bar-cost...

And believe me, alcohol and computers have a problem when mixed...

  11. What's the price of a genuine windows license here? I only paid 7500 Baht for the whole computer including monitor, speakers, keyboard and mouse, so I'd be loath to spend 3500 Baht on just a new OS

Cost price is about 5700 baht but remember there are end copies (real ones) of XP going around at I think something like $100.

That depends which Windows version you want, if you just want XP home, you can get a genuine for 3500 THB. And as I posted somewhere you can almost get Vista for the same now after the distributors almost halved the price this week to get rid of Vista before Windows 7 arrives.

As I mentioned somewhere I donot fix anything now except my OWN computer. Prices are collapsing but I have to ask to find out latest... real sw only.

oops one mistake: my kids have computers really bought laptops: I haven't checked them to see whats inside...

  12. All this talk of pirated Windows causing viruses and whatnot is just rubbish. The operating system (real or fake) and its working state is only governed by the user and their actions. Therefore a Windows OS (fake or real) with a virus will act the same way. Viruses do not discriminate according to whether you paid for the OS or not. Any half decent PC Technician can install a fake version of Windows that actually works. If you buy a PC with a pirated version installed by someone who does not know what they are doing then it is your fault in the end because you did not check it yourself. Sure, genuine software is obviously better than fake purely for the 'I actually paid for this' factor, but if it was not so expensive to the majority of users to buy a license then maybe more people would go genuine.

    ************

Partly right and wrong: there are copies around as good as the real programs but if you want something FIXED, the problems start.

    ************

    Ian

    +1

    My thoughts exactly!

However, I always advise people to be wary of the software that is (pre)installed onto PCs bought or serviced in Thailand. More often than not, they'll run into problems -- especially if the operating system on the computer came from a ghost image rather than a fresh installation. My advice: Learn to setup Windows yourself or have a tech-savvy friend do it for you.

    ********

totally true and I always install from the good cd I have.

    Its a pain though!

Last time I did it and I think I myself have to do it again soon, it took 3 days to get all those damned updates back in...

    ********

But, other than Windows and the like, where can one buy legal software here in Thailand. I've yet to find it...guess I'm not looking in the right places. For example, Corel Photopaint or Dreameweaver?

    Yeah really...

Where the heck can one buy LEGIT software in this country? Since piracy is so rampant here, a lot of folks I know are quite hesitant to shell out their hard-earned $$ on software -- fearing it might turn out to be 'pirated'. And to be honest, I can't really blame them. If you've lived here long enough, you'd probably feel the same way.

    Check the internet.... USA obviously!

  13. We are wanting to but genuine versions of the following - does anyone know the best place to buy from i.e. that they really are genuine and the best price ?

    Thanks

Microsoft exchange server 2003 10 users

Windows 2003 Server standard edition OEM 10 users

Windows 7 corporate license for 10 users with both XP and win 7 media

    First one question :

OEM you mean you buy Hardware as well??

Ok, I can ask the question this morning but you should consider if your company can get them from the USA... There are some special offers there and from what I saw I wasn't watching them...

Also you HAVE 10 users or you want it to be usable by 10 users.

Who installs them? NOT me as I am now properly retired...

As you saw from my posts I was really annoyed by being told the 3 of 5 cd s were supposed to be faked and leaked.

They had the cd's but serials were locked up... I personally installed them and while you can extract them from systems, the guys in this office really only use their windows for proper business as far as I know!

  14. M$ does not revoke a license in a legal sense but they can and do block re-activation of the OS, which amounts to the same!

We have an older PC which started out with legit OEM XP Pro. Over time it had hardware problems including MB, all were solved and replaced for free since under warranty, but eventually M$ no longer allowed re-activation of the OS!!! guess on what this PC is running now.

    opalhort

Have you considered that if you used a copy of a real CD with your OLD serial number might have reactivated??

  15. If you are using a pirated copy of windows your system is wide open.... and WILL be compromised, no matter what firewall or anti virus software you use. Is it worth it ?

If you are using a REAL copy of windows your system is ALSO wide open.... and WILL be compromised, no matter what firewall or anti virus software you use. Is it worth it ?

    Answer likely NO....

OK to be honest, if you get an original CD you can at least be partly sure nobody messed around with it but how in one case 5 keys, all real, ended up with 3 on a MS list not working AND me getting silly answers about them being pirated etc.

  16. I answered real as I have a laptop running a real version of Windows XP Pro, a desktop running an evaluation copy of Windows 7 Ultimate (which is good until June next year I think) and another desktop I bought second hand that came with Windows XP that I can not be 100% sure is genuine, but it is an HP Pavilion computer, so I presume it is.
Did they give you the original drivers with your HP Pavilion? Personally, I would not buy secondhand unless they gave me the drivers to go with it. That way I can easily reload the OS incase I need to. Otherwise, you're sorta out of luck. :)

No disks, but there's nothing specific on it that I think would need specific drivers that were only available from HP and weren't on the website. Having more than one computer makes it easy to DL and burn to a disk if one computer stops working

I usually format the HD on a new computer anyway and reinstall a clean version of the OS to get rid of all the crap the makers put on it, so no biggie if I have to do that again, although with no Windows disk, it would mean putting a pirate version on there or shelling out for an XP license.

  17. Genuine Version Of Windows, yes Vista. I always run the genuine and always will to avoid trouble with upgrades.

Well I had a beta test and kicked it out after an hour, it gave me a big headache and having sold/supported all kind of computers it was a first... Anyway, Vista will die the death it deserves...

As an example I have exactly ONE customer who uses VISTA and he needs it as its 64 bit and he bought the computer with Vista installed.... I never saw the need to install the latest windows just because it was the latest!

Also as a sideline with another customer I installed XP-PRO, and after a while the stupid messages appeared about it being a pirated copy. The disks were supplied by the Thai distributor and as customer paid money for it, we were very annoyed.

I didn't charge my profit on the disks as essentially I prefer to get paid for the INSTALL, which I did, but not the software for arranging it. Works about to the same and one can at least in theory say, complain to MS...

He had 5 systems, 3 keys were recognized after I send them to MS. However the funny part was that I NEVER stick keys on the side/bottom of a computer as MS keeps suggesting. After installing the thing I make 2 photocopies of which 1 was going to the boss of the company to stick into his safe and the originals going somewhere else. Other copy went in my safe. I NEVER lost a key....

I complained and the silly stories I heard were amusing and to me it looks like MS hasn't got a clue whats fake and what isn't.

I reinstalled the lot and ALL were accepted.

Fatal flaw: one should have been able to reinstall the valid key without reinstall.

  18. As with all things here - the advisors advising have limited knowledge and do not understand thus the blind lead the blind. This is happening now in a totally unrelated deal on Tax Credits for the Thai Film Industry. A woman with no understanding and who has never done a tax credit funded film is advising the Government and Film Office. There are people here in Thailand who know Telco's inside out and ditto the film industry but Thai on Thai is how it has to be so the bribes can be covered.

Simple really - hang the sensibilities or common sense of looking to the future... :)

Sensibilities, now that is funny, putting Thailand and technology into the same sentence is like putting military and intelligence together in the same breath, totally mismanaged and doomed for failure....why not wise up and look at a successful model then mirror it or better yet hire their managers to implement and upgrade your systems and Fing learn how to Fing allocate bandwidth on your circuits, don't let the managers do it, let the technicians.....God my F'n head is going to explode dealing with this IPSTAR crap from TOT....sorry I'm about to flip.

Sorry, I thought IPstar had been created by Taxin's company , did it end up in TOT? lousy system... Nothing but problems but partly due to installations etc... and the Satellite assuming its still the same one...

  19. not to be a#$hole but it couldnt have been that bad, you did get into the country.. And the taxi guys, just ignore em or a simple no always works with little stress. I fly once a week from swampy, was stuck there waiting for my ride home for a hour on monday night got plenty of offers, but nothing a no thank you didnt work for..... sometimes negative attitudes just make a situation worse.

You could try what I often do in (different) circumstances... It basically shows you are not interested in a KNOWN Thai way.

Stretch you lower arm of the left arm to the idiots not leaving you alone and move the hand Horizontally from left to right etc and normally this is understood as meaning "NO". As said you do the movement 5 times in a row and they leave you alone...

Note its a movement rotating left /right/left etc around the wrist and if necessary ask a local farang or Thai to show you...

  20. well Rob, with my athletic figure and propensity for cold beer and good food (is that an oxymoron?), suffice to say I learned along time ago that it's better to feed a pack of soi dogs than try to fight them off.

I never liked fighting so i try to avoid it when possible. (it almost always is)

    Once a kaaskop, always a kaaskop; you can't be(come) an ex-kaaskop :D

The moment you read this I'll bet the water is running from your mouth, thinking about a nice piece of Old Amsterdam.... :)

    post-13995-1252498180_thumb.jpg Old Amsterdam Cheese

btw: I happen to know a "Blok" family from Uithoorn once...same-same ?

    If so, pm me.

    LaoPo

How much is that Cheese at present? Any smart idea how to get it here in Thailand without getting fleeced?

I have seen them like 37 years ago but I do not think there was at that time a label on it!

Secondly I was some 24-25 years ago working in Egypt and cheese there (Leiden and Gouda) was cheap.

Also someone had married an Egyptians sister and I spotted them in Cairo of all places chopping slices of a nice piece of Jambon.... (which was Ardenner Ham!). Now waiting for a Frenchmen to come back with Camembert!

  21. cop volunteer but you cannot spell ? maybe you should concentrate your time in going back to school to learn basic english ?

Here we go another spelling lesson, Funny i could not spot a spelling mistake. Maybe you could enlighten us all and point it out?

Well a question then: Both of you had capitals missing or present where they should have been or missing.

And I know I did the same in the previous sentence!

Please no more about spelling, its anyway rude to complain about it.

Personally I am surprised the farang's were used to do that sex-sting operation.

Would it not be a lot more useful if they got rid of the many timeshare con men?

I heard quite clearly from one it cost them or their bosses 1000 baht per day to operate... And they were a damned pain!

Personally I am not interested in such a setup anyway as you likely not all know that the normal police etc has to buy all their uniforms etc , have to pay their coffee during the day. I was by accident visiting a police station and was treated well but while I normally speak English to them I can understand what they say. One was asking his boss what he should charge me and it was 100 baht for the coffee which was almost finished; when they figured out I had understood the whole conversation we had a good laugh together and yes, they were welcome to that 100 baht... I just wish that in the villages they would hrab anyone with a hand-phone near his ears, no motorbike helmet, driving on wrong side of the road and lots of similar things!

  22. Finally!

This will be a short-term fix until they enact laws with teeth, i.e. quite harsh penalties. A 1000 baht fine is chicken feed and has no deterrent effect whatsoever. Make it 100,000 baht or more in addition to jail time of at least 1 year and really enforce that law and they can then clean it up. Many laws here have paltry fines and have not been updated for years. 1,000 baht may have been a lot 30 years ago, but it's chicken feed today.

It wouldn't be too hard to push through such a law in Parliament I would think especially because these vultures tarnish the image of the country and as we all know, first impresssions are everything.

    1. Personally I would say confiscate the cars, and donot give them back....

    2. If possible tatoo them on the forehead to identify them.....

  23. I am a firm believer in giving a test to all who want to come to Thailand before they get on the plane, weed out the fools and misfits. This is no place to be without a brain.

What to do otherwise, let them rob banks at home??They get out again way too early!

Same with drug-users: let them on an airplane and fly to Singapore. Saves a LOT of money if they take care of them(g).
