  1. Those dash cams are a survival tool 650 baht I paid

    Yes.

I'll never drive in Thailand again without a dash camera.

Unfortunately they weren't widely available at the time of this incident.

    It wasn't an accident.

It was a maniac on a motorbike, speeding, in the wrong lane.

I normally do not get a thrill out of anybody's pain, but I was SO, SO, happy that he at least broke his leg and totaled his uninsured motor-scooter.

    a bit off topic, but....

i had a dash cam and never had to use it, but my thinking (aside from documenting an accident) was that it would be a good BIB bribe deterence. Kinda like, "smile for the camera" but not as obvious as a phone camera.

  2. My 5 year TDLs (auto and motocy) expire next year and I no longer live in LOS with a non immigrant visa. I wonder if it wiill be sufficienf to show a condo contract with a tourist visa to renew, or will I need a retirement or ed visa or something more permanent than a 30 day visa to renew.... ?

    Any thoughts?

  3. Blood around the ears and it was not washed off after floating face down? There must have been a lot more blood to still have some left on the head. That suggests trauma to the head. From a fall against the side of the pool? Then his glass would have fallen onto the pool apron.

Sunglasses off? As a consequence of the head trauma or from the later force in hitting the water?

Something doesn't seem quite right here. Quite convenient that the TGF was out of town.

My sympathies go out to the man and his family. I hope the cause is found and justice served if needed.

(Sorry, Mod, the facts in the article do not clearly indicate a medical accident IMHO).

  4. I have always preferred DMK over BKK... I can arrive at Don Muang 10 min before the flight and still make it on the plane. Coming home on arrival, I can be in my house in about 35 min after touchdown. At BKK, I'd still be waiting for my bag to come out of the horrible mess they call a baggage claim.

BTW, it will also make the flights cheaper. I was paying an extra 100 baht surcharge when Thai Orient moved to BKK, and I'm sure the airlines also pay AOT a lot more for gates at BKK. than DMK.

As far as inter-airport transport goes, I remember Thai Air do a fairly good job of checking ppl in at the Ladprao Metro station and taking them by bus directly to Don Muang, when Thai still had a few domestic flights operating from DMK. I think the inter-airport solution will happen, either on a per-airline basis or as an AOT initiative.

  5. seems like the security guard was in on the action with the second woman. i would think the hotel would make sure heads roll.

also, nothing was mentioned about what the farang was told when he went into the room with the phony cop and second woman. what were the threats made or fabricated charges discussed?

knowing how corrupt the BIB are in general and in pattaya in particular, it is not surprising that it was difficult to tell the "good guys" from the bad. It was just extortion by a different bunch of thugs...

And when everyone around you is speaking in a language you don't understand and citing laws that are unfamiliar, it's easy to see how the easiest exit is to pay the money.

  6. wow, it must be s slow day at the MICT now... I guess after having exhausted the number of websites to block (already at 850,596 URLS as of April 5), the censors and PC ppl must be looking for fresh fodder, with no more topless gaming dens and songkran shenanigans in sight for another nine months....

  7. Thai is the National Carrier and not a budget airline so why people are commenting on them is beyond me? (I am talking about Thai that will be stay fully operational from Swampy not ThaiSmile or Nok)

Well, THAI was one of the three airlines that retained its domestic service from DMK after the international airport moved to the "new" BKK. It was only later that it moved *all* of its flights to the new BKK.

That's why. THAI can always be used by its government owners as a lever to bring traffic at DMK up to sustainable economic levels.

  8. If I'm not renting a car at Budget or Avis, I *ALWAYS* take a metered taxi at the airport to my Surin/Bangtao condo. Sometimes the taxi queu is 30 min or more, but it's worth it IMHO.

The fare is usually about 200 to 250 baht, on the meter, never any hassle. I usually get the guy's number and arrange for him to pick me up again in a few day's time (you cannot request taxi pickup from the company phoneline). And I've *never* been cheated by the taxis.

Compare that to 450 baht by airport "limo" or the 500+ baht via the gypsy taxis.

    It's a no brainer.

    RIP tuktuks.

  9. Not very newsworthy here.

Airlines in the "process of considering moving" is hardly the same as the story title "3 Budget airlines to return to Don Muang Airport". The head of Orient Thai has already said it needs incentives to offset the cost to move operations yet again. And no mention of THAI, who vacated a couple of years back. I guess Nok will sub for THAI in this case.

Thai Air Asia actually has a good opportunity to build its regional network feeding into its other hubs in Phuket and elsewhere. Southwest Airlines in the US built up its whole network by using secondary airports and quickly turning around flights.

  10. yeah, i thought about that, but sunset is 6:40pm, and sunrise is 6:10am. Seems like plenty of time to call a boat or chopper. I would have thought the Navy must have at least one small boat at Chalong Harbor , or call out a few longtails.

I think it's probably more that the communications channels are not set up to handle emergencies. At any rate, if they wait long enough, it's no longer an emergency.

  11. It is a young mans dream to travel the globe. The stout of heart do and some find early death in a geophysical circumstance that had prevailed for eons. Such is the mystery of chance. Rest in peace dear traveler.
I have been working over 35 years in the field of geophysics. How much longer can I expect to dodge the bullet?
I am in Astrophysics. How long do I have?
I'm in Quantum physics. I'm elsewhere at the moment.-mel.
omg, I've got 30 years in geophysics... I'd better check my life insurance...

in all seriousness, I hope he rests in peace

  12. My expat friend's son was caught by the BIBa few years back with mj after leaving a BKK club. His parents had to spring him from the police station at 3am with a 35k payment. Of course the price is higher if your perceived wealth is greater.

I would consider 20k a bargain to stay out of a Thai prison. Why Is this guy even questioning whether to pay?
