  1. Yesterday afternoon me and my friend went to the Immigration office in Hua Hin for my friend's visa extension. Myself have to do this on the 29th April 2008. We came to the office with all the necessary paperwork including a teaching permission of the Phetchaburi Service Area of the Ministry of Education.

Hua Hin immigration office wants to see the Teacher License from the Teacher's Council of Thailand. The teaching permission given by our Service Area isn't valid for them. If you don't have one, they won't give you an extension. Upon asking they showed us a letter from the Prachuab Khiri Khan Service Area of the Ministry of Education which gives an explanation about the rules.

Recently several members on this board and the other one wrote that they acquired a visa extension without having the TCT teacher license. For sure, that wasn't at the Hua Hin Immigration office. I will go to another Immigration office for my visa extension because currently I don't hold a TCT teacher license.

This is just a warning for our members about Singkon (Hua Hin) Immigration Office. It's reported that there are similar problems at Songkla Immigration.

Below you find a scan of the document they want.

  2. It's Songkran now and the embassy states on its website that a new passport can take up to two weeks.

I understand your dilema, however I believe songran has finished in Bangkok but that aside it would be worth spending a few baht on a phone call to the embassy, explain your situation and ask them if you come up in person with the application and old passport can they renew it prior to the 28th? Worst case scenario is you waste a few baht on a phone call, best case is they say yes! end of problem.

Thanks JohnC. The mrs. and I have decided to go to the Embassy first thing tomorrow morning (17-04-08). Our holiday by car to Kanchanaburi and Mae Sot which starts today, will get a little detour. If the Embassy can get me one in time it would be perfect. If not I should get an extension in my old passport until September 2008 according to several posters.

  3. i am astonished to read this story.

    it is so unThai.

    1. a test that can be failed!

    2. a test when you haven't been given the answers beforehand!

    seems like blatant farang persecution.

as a good teacher i always gave answers to tests the day before,

so the real test in a test is to remember the answers for 24 hours.

gee, isn't that hard enough already????

Come on, mark lamai. Why are you astonished to read this post? You've other things to worry about.

You've pain in your right teeth

    You've lost your golf game

Your bar can't be sold for the price you want

You want to sell your bike but nobody wants it

  4. a) send him to the office.

:o cajole him in front of his friends and embarrass him.

    c) explain to him why his behavior is wrong.

    d) nothing.

I think it's C. This one fits Thai school culture. i.e. Students can not be sent out of the classroom, you don't shout at students, you don't let students lose face and you can not let students fail.

  5. Gusgorman and JohnC, thank you very much for your quick response.

It's Songkran now and the embassy states on its website that a new passport can take up to two weeks. I have to go to Immi on the 28th April. It seems that I'm too late. Stupid, stupid, stupid me.

I really hope that things will happen as JohnC wrote. i.e. That Immigration will give me a visa extension until September 2008. It's sad for the vice-versa travel, the paperwork and the costs but that's the price I've to pay.

Any other insights are very welcome. Thank you very much.

  6. Why do you have to close the thread because you don't agree with what I said?

I agree with what you've said but not all teachers are intelligent as you are.

Any educator should know about multiple intelligences theory (Howard Gardner) , it is basic knowledge.

    You are educated. We aren't.

I haven't seen the tests yet myself as I believe that I don't have to do them, but they look like they test some basic knowledge that is covered in any teaching qualification course.

I've seen them twice. Don't you really get it?

We are teachers at government or private schools. We came here with our degree in A. or Sc. That seems not to be enough anymore. We are trying to coop with that! We are not teachers at international schools with Education Degrees, PGCE's or Grad.Dip.T.P. because that wasn't asked before at government schools or private schools. I'm a teacher in Thailand since June 2002. At that time schools only wanted a B.A. or B.Sc. Don't shoot me about the TCT exemption. I didn't have a WP in those first years. I was working for a Siam agency.

    Haltes, mate. You should know!

  7. I would be interested to know some of the content, not specific questions.

Did it ask about models of curriculm design?

    Development psychology? Piaget, Vygotsky

    Learning theory? Gardner etc

Bloom: cognitive, affective, psycho motor domains?

These specific questions were left out this time. One single question I remember was:"who invented Multiple Intelligences"?

Many questions involved case studies. To answer them, one should have read some books about Educational Psychology, Curriculum Development, Learning Management and the Thai Educational Acts.

  8. Hi there, could anybody please tell me where the fuse box location is for the isuzu dmax highlander,i was thinking of dis-connecting the air conditioning by removing the fuse,or is there another method,my reasons are not madness, mainly a joke.....thankyou Mr jay

In the cabin, at the right side of your dashboard. When you open the driver's door you can see the fuse cover with a slot in it.

  9. During the three years or so we "worked together" she did everything she could to avoid meeting me.

Are you sure it's related to the French language only? I work with Thai teachers of English for years. They avoid me. Not because they're not able to communicate with me. They simply avoid me because they don't like me. Perhaps my armpits smell bad. I don't know.

  10. Why didn't they notice my overstay at the border?

Immigration at the border noticed it. You came there with a visa extension but without re-entry. But Immigration at the border couldn't determine how long you "over-stayed". That's why you were sent back.

So, back to Labour, get the dor tor 10, look at the second check box. This box mentions the date that work has stopped. Add 7 days and from that date until you leave the country is your over-stay. 500 THB per day with a maximum of 20,000 THB.

  11. Had the truck (Cab4 3.0 VGS) a week now, went to the village in it and the left hand side has a scrape down it from branches and the drivers door has numerous scratch marks from the dog jumping up at it....went into Isuzu here in Sakon Nakhon and "No problem covered by warranty". I would have been a little more impressed if i could drive it over rough terrain without worrying about the paintwork! Anyone else had this problem? Have i bought a "pup"?

That's the problem with every black car paint.

I've a Starry Black Mica D-Max October 2007. Scratches and pits. It's all in the game!

I replied 'its a pickup - its supposed to get dirty'

Sorry, we're not talking about dirty cars.

  12. My contract is not being renewed. I am going to begin looking for new employment.

A colleague of mine e-mailed me the following:

'It appears that there is a new regulation requiring you to get a confirmation from the school (your employer) on when your contract ends and you then need to take this to one of the bodies as this is the end of your contract and then the seven days runs from then.'

My colleague informs me that this will 'protect my visa'. Apparently the 'bodies' to which he refers are the Immigration Department or the Work Permit Department (I think the formal name is the Department of Labour).

Anyone know anything about this?? Do I need to get confirmation from the school that my contract has ended?

You don't need a confirmation that your contract has ended. Employer nor employee have to confirm that. It simply ends. When the employer likes you she will offer you a new contract. Most foreign teachers in Thailand have a contract for one year. When your contract will not be renewed you have to look for another job. The moment your work permit, thus your visa-extension is cancelled, you've seven days to leave the country and apply for a new non-immigrant B. Some, really some teachers manage to get a new work permit within 3 days, valid for 4 days in case they have a new job, but that's rare! These teachers don't have to leave the country.

  13. In my previous school i paid personal income tax with deductions for marriage, health care etc and received reciepts monthly. At my new school however i have been paying tax (albeit at a higher rate) however they inform me they pay this as a school rather than individual thus i have not received a monthly reciept (nor pay slip!?) I have been informed that i will receive a yearly receipt under the school owner's name.

No problem at all. Before the 1st of April you go to the tax office with the school's statement that they paid tax at the amount of xx,xxx THB for Mr. FTC. At the tax office you fill in tax form nr. 90/91 and it's done. In the past you received a yellow/white receipt. Currently it's an A4 print.

I am very confused and lost with it all......... i need a receipt to show my taxes as i plan to leave LOS in a few months and do not need trouble with immigration regarding this at the airport.

You need a tax clearance receipt for a visa extension. Not for leaving the country.

    Good luck.

  14. Could you post a link to the Labor Act? It would be very helpful to us teachers.

    Here it is.
