Ive read that Bangkok Bank is open in Yangon as well as UOB are now open. Any experience with foreign currency (USD?) accounts? Cheap fees?

hey - thanks for all this very useful information! Looking forward to getting up there some time soon

Has anyone ever went to Lashio? I believe it is in Shan state, which is restricted to travel to w/o proper permits or documentation. Is it easy to apply and receive this? Anyone have any experiences with this Lashio, or otherwise?
Thanks

I was just looking at this online. Too bad the audio is in cassette format.

I remember, now that you pointed it out - but totally forgot that incident completely. jeez~

They have yet to encounter mass protests. These would be quite easy to pull off with social media theses days.. imagine something along the scale of 73' https://youtu.be/1Qm9pzYs-oU
although.. can't see it happening.. students aren't that hungry anymore

surreal place!

Briggsy : yes true - lots of guess work - all i am saying.. don't think she was calling the heavy hitters in at that point in time.
Being a Leo girl isn't a big accomplishment; magic lobbying or not.
giddyup: I doubt a foreigner would get out of a situation like that, especially if causing death.
Time will see what happens - I think a few people may be overestimating her clout.

Ah need some rain boots to wade through the ignorance in this thread.
The comparisons with the Vorayuth Yoovidhya case, aside from a dead police officer, are totally baseless way off the mark of the reality of this situation. Vorayuth Yoovidhya is part of one of the richest and some may say powerful families in Thailand. This is a non-entity actress who has been in some b-films and cheap TV dramas. Owning or driving a Mercedes is hardly a marker up the often wrongly and illogically applied hi-so title. Considering she is half Thai, one may consider the fact that her family probably does have some money and may be middle or upper class. Since we don't really know her whole background its probably better to not just regurgitate tired stereotypes, and old and boring labels.
If she WAS high and or drunk then she should face the consequences, although considering the whole scene being filmed and (disgustingly..) shared and watched online kinda leads me to believe the last thing that was happening at the scene of this accident was a corrupt fast one being pulled by an evil, rich, powerful socialite. Just a out of sorts 28 year old who is obviously in shock.
I grew up and studied with lots of girls who were like this - by no means rich, but probably upper middle class, who probably don't face the hardships of TV members favorite poor-ignorant-farmer demo-graph may face, but by no realistic reasoning can be consider elite, hi-so, or even rich for that matter. It is pathetic that the amount of people on this forum that are jaded and misled stemming from their own laughable experiences (unexperiences? (sic) ) in this country.
A very tragic situation.
You want to explain why she wasn't alcohol tested at the scene or immediately after? I don't know how they are going to charge her with being drunk (if she was) if she wasn't tested until 48 hours later.
I can't explain and have no idea. Kinda doubt that she waved her ELITIST MONEY WAND and got out of it though. Easy to make the assumptions - but maybe its better to be opened minded.
I will take a wild guess that the untrained first responders and police on the scene don't know how to deal with a raving, woman who was obviously quite traumatized to the point of even soiling her self. Don't get me wrong I am not saying this woman was in the right or wasn't coked out of her mind after smoking ice and drinking all night at an orgy - my point is that it is unfathomable to compare some 2-bit actress with the tragic and grossly corrupt Vorayuth Yoovidhya case. That case rivals infamous other cases like the that of Sherry-Ann Duncan and that bitch Suvibul Patpongpanit or even Duangchalerm Yubamrung executing that police officer in a night club. etc etc.

Very tragic !
you go out for a snac as you hungry ,
you speed your car and kill a cop !!
Thats right - tragic. As in it is a tragedy. Senseless loss of life. Check google, it can sort you if you are confused.
Tragic because many avoidable factors apparently played a role in this. Whether its speeding, drug or alcohol abuse, sleeping in a parked and unlit car, on an expressway.. etc.

Can anyone recommend a gym in Yangon that has a squat rack (for doing squats..) or some decent weights for lifting.. ie.. olympic bar, bench press, etc.. rather than the typical ill equipped (ie, a few weight 'machines' and some cardio equipment) hotel gyms?
Thanks for the help

Nah - Lets just put some percentage on power eh ?
big city in the middle - bkk eh ?
there is a real reason why those farmers are the down trodden eh
Quite funny as when these luddites are throwing out there blank generalizations they forget that a lot of the North and North / East are most comprised of ethnic Laotian and quite often Khmer. Anyways my point is that despite population mass - its not always the best litmus test. Now I do understand that a lot of the degenerate scum riff raff here are shacked up and exploiting these people (or vicE versA?) for what ever, they/we/ thai forum/ should focus on reality of Thailand, which really is the old bkk / กทม kinda thing. its like reading <deleted> who stay at khaosan complaining of expensive taxis or pushy tuk tuks. for this i say: you made your bed, now have a nap

sorry whats a fortnight ? is that a month?
-
also another note - please understand just cause you live in hillbilly land or are involved in some scenario (which ever that may be) that doesn't apply to the whole country nor all of its people. Noticed that <deleted> here are in the ol province trap and then are shocked at country bumpkin behavior.. when in Thai reality that doesn't mean much.. cept for you

didn't read the drive - direct reply to the subject header.
i think in the west many people have these invisible walls constructed that protect them from other people - strangers, ie not much smiling at the mall, or manners (cept maybe Canada?) etc etc yet people still have a strong kinda sense of values (real values..) etc..
I noticed many Thais are are super open and happy and (etc.) on the surface but really ethically and morally may be in different categories, **
although by saying this, I find it hard to paint all people with a single brush.. considering the more specific class structure in Thailand, especially when compared with the west - I believe differing sets or morality start to emerge. Many people on generally (a net forum thing maybe? or else where too) seem to point towards theravada buddhism as one of the factors, which seems to explain certain mindsets yet also seems to create a huge clash in certain situations where one would assume the buddhist approach would be .. "morally superior" .. but then again deeper investigation to the buddhists here also can be quite revealing as well.
I think its a top to bottom different approach than what most western people used to.. I use this from a NA point of view then European. The media is different, tradition and respect is different. Societal hierarchy is different and prevalent. Community, class, and family are totally different. Morality, but perhaps more importantly mortality is different as well. Fear of death goes pretty far in the west.

"Don't mua"
"mua for sure"

I thought as kinda explained above >> the name was changed from "SIAM" to Thailand ie.. Land of the People .. kinda makes sense if you think of it like that, although again this is just guesswork on my part. citation needed.

Ah - I am going to be based in Yangon for a while earning in USD. Thinking about best way to take care of the cash. Was looking into foreign savings accounts but from what I have seen - not the best fee structure for STORING your money there
