  1. Had to smile at the mention of Scotland. This is the first summer for several years I haven't spent in Thailand and ... yes, I'm presently on holiday in Scotland. There is still a certain Thai flavour to the trip in that the Thai wife and neice are here too. We went to Glen Coe yesterday and they agreed that the view was 'suay gwaa Chiang Mai'. They were also very excited about their first attempt at ice skating at a local rink. I shall certainly be returning to LOS in future, but I just feel that several factors, including economics, make a trip there rather unappealing this year. Scotland is not exactly a bargain (though there are quite a few offers at hotels and restaurants) but the difference in travel costs can cover a lot. I'm afraid that there are lots of small things about LOS (yes, even trivial things like ATM fees) that have pissed me off in the last year or two and I felt that a break was in order. Off to Loch Ness today and I have been trying to explain the difference between Nessie and Pra Ya Na. Have to say also that a pint of Belhaven holds up pretty well in comparison to Chang.

Have to write that one down ( I have made someone smile on here ) thanks

  2. ive been back in blighty,3weeks now after 7years in los,and hand on heart im quite enjoying uk,weather okay, food prices cheap, and quite peaceful, dont miss the buzz, yet.
i have reasons to like both places, these people that HATE where they came from must have moved from real shitholes to think thailand is so wonderful ( or be fanny mad ) :)

Tut tut tut ,,,,,,, I hope the ( you know who,s are tucked up in bed now ) what language Timothy ooooooooo I have to look at the organic lettuce forum now

  3. Yes, I got fed up with Thailand and went back to Oz. Main reasons:

    the climate

    pollution

no top class rugby or cricket

    the traffic

    language, culture, and family

    financial security

poor quality of television and the media generally (maybe better now, particularly via internet)

This is a good post to read for any dreamers out there to read ,, my advice would be to go MANY times before commiting ,, I have been over 11 times and I am pretty sure I wouldnt want to live there full time ,, but its different for everyone

  4. sad to see so many people here still judge a book by it's cover.

    so shallow.

i have twelve tattoos, traditional sak yants.

some were done when i was a monk, some where not.

I don't have a personality disorder, and i have never been in trouble with the law,and i treat all people with respect regardless of there personal choices.

should i ever run a business i will judge people by there performance rather then there appearance.

my wife is thai also and she has no tattoos and she dislikes mine, fortunately she is not so shallow and looked beyond my tattoos, and took the time to get to know me.

because of needless stereotypes same of you may have lost potentially good staff and more importantly good friendships and relationships.

Have to agree with you here ,its each to their own, and I would have no opinion of you either way if I saw your tattoos , but I am afraid for ME an tattoo on a woman turns my guts over ,, it never fails to amaze me how some Thai women are trying to make themselves look so much like the women from the west that their ex bfs,/ husbands are prepared to travel half way around the world to escape from

  5. Couldnt think of anything more gross or off putting,, humping something with a tatttoo on it ,, so sexy and feminine a big skull and cross bones on its arms ( not ) Mabe thats why they invented Viagra to help people in this situation

Brad Pitt seems not to have a problem with La Jolie.

They were made for eachother,,,,,,,birds of a feather flock together

  6. Youve just bagged yourself a bargain break to Scotland havent you ?? come on be honest ,,,,,

I never thought of going there. I wonder how that would work out as related to money spent? I spend an average of $5,000 for a 4 week stay in Thailand. I wonder what $5,000 USD would get me for a 4 week stay in Scotland?

The current Scottish / US climate you will probably get a years all incl.. Oh and by the way they also have funny men noncing about in skirts

  7. Many of you may remember me from previous posts about my adventures in Thailand. In those posts I talked about some of the wonderful and great times that I have had in Thailand. I talked about the friends I made and the exciting adventures that seem to lend them self to me while in the land of smiles. I also talked about some of the bad things that happened to me and near me. Some of those experiences caused me to put a return visit to Thailand on hold. It turns out that if I had come I would have been stuck in Thailand at the Airport for an untold amount of time and that would have lead to an avalanche of problems here at home.

Earlier this year I decided that I would come back to Thailand and enjoy the company of the friends I made and explore more of Thailand and make some new friends. I was feeling eager to return and explore and enjoy the things that I have come to love about Thailand; the food, the shopping, the motor-bike taxis, the kindness of the people, the overall Thai style... I wanted that again. I also loved meeting visitors from all over the world who were vacationing in the land of smile.

With all the negative things happening there that I have read on this board as well as others, I have decided to move my holiday from October to December, but as the bad new continues, I have decided to cancel my holiday there altogether. I won't be visiting Thailand this year at all.

I hope and wish all the best for Thailand, its people and those who visit there.

So there you have it. If any of you wonder if all that is going on there has any effect of return visitors to Thailand, yes it does. It had an effect on me.

Youve just bagged yourself a bargain break to Scotland havent you ?? come on be honest ,,,,,

  8. Due to the early release of the Libyan / Locharbie bomber , Americans are becoming increasingly more angry over this and are now begining to boycott Scotch whisky ,, BP fuels ,, shortbread ?? and are refusing to bring their tourist dollars north -of-the border .

  9. Hi Guys,

My Thai wife is applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK,

she has been in the UK for approx. 5 years but has only just obtained the ESOL 'Skills for Life' qualification.

Form SET(M) states she can apply in person at a public enguiry office for a fee of 1070 pounds.

    1. Is this an interview with a number of questions she needs to answer correctly to obtain her visa?

    2. Can I attend the interview?

    3. How long does the process/interview take ie 10min - 1/2 day?

    4. I live in Croydon, is there a long waiting time before we can attend the office?

    5. Any other info that might help?

As always thank you in advance for any help.

    Gibbo

For a fee of £1070 it should be a weeks interview with full board and accomadation ,,,,,,,the tax scamming bastards !!!!!!!!

Yes, I agree - Time to get the credit card out again

Weve all been there and done it mate,,you have obviously been 2 times before for her FLR,s,,,,,the good thing living where you do you can go home for lunch at half time during the grilling and the thumbscrews,,

  12. After over 4 years here I can say it is pretty boring. ..

About 20 months ago I decided to undertake the study of the native language spoken by the diminutive, yet ever-smiling inhabitants here in the glorious "Land 'O Thais". Now I can now speak, read and to a lesser extent write it, so my day to day interaction with the natives has increased markedly.

Believe me you have to be pretty fr*ckin' bored to undertake the study of ANY "one-horse town" language spoken only by a tiny insignificant country in S/E Asia which most people in the world couldn't find on a map if it was hi-lighted.

I am also working on my PhD in "Idiosyncratic Anthropology"; a relatively newly recognized field of study also known as "Oxymoronic Anthropology". This year I hope to publish a companion coffee-table pictorial book called the "Mating habits of old, fat bald, beer-bellied foreigners and their (in) significant others" <-- working title only.

Pre-order your copy now!! Who knows; maybe you are featured in the book. Every page is a 'suitable for framing' picture of of a foreigner as they staggered drunkenly down the Sukhumvit wearing camo-cargo shorts, 70 baht sandals, and a sweat stained Singha beer singlet. All of them are hand-in-hand with their short, tattooed, pierced, gold encrusted, flat nosed, splayed toed, (in)significant other also know as their "thai in tow". As a bonus some even show foreigners pushing a pram with a thai baby in it as well.

As you can see by my posts, I usually just disparage, and criticize the native inhabitants and other foreigners living here about their lives. It's a tough job, but someone has to do it.

I also run a cottage-business of writing heart wrenching emotional emails for "time-share-gurls" to their foreign sponsors in other countries, as well as assisting foreigners get their visas sorted out when they are too stupid to understand the rules. Both are good for a few laughs now and again.

Being retired, leaves me bored to tears most days, but probably not as bored as I would be in the US of A. There are far more 'interesting' people to make cynical, acerbic observations about here than there.

Very funny post ,,,,, we share the same sense of humour ,,,,, I post in a similar vein but unfortunately most people on here cannot see through the trees to the wood pile and just jump on the aggressive attack him bandwagon.

Keep it up its put me in a good mood to finish the wallpapering today.

By the way I dont get bored because I have a busy life in the UK work full time but will be living 2 months a year in our home on the wifes land in North Issan, thats about enuf for me,and her to now she is settled in the UK

  13. Happiness come from inner contentment wherever you are ,,,,,,,,,you dont need a mass of the folding stuff ,, just enuf to be comfortable ,, and be lucky enuf to be beside the one you was meant to be with in this life

  14. Wish you all the best on this one Brig, sounds like you will have to cross over a few minefields to make this one happen ,, I hope your brother in law in Brighton is helping with the old folding stuff with you .

I know you say they have been over here before on visitor visas etc ,, and I know about the pull of the grandchildren , but it seems a hel_l of a step for the older Thai generation to make it over here full time , believe me I would love my Mum and Dad inlaws here with us full time , but it will never happen as they have 3 children and grandchildren LOS ,, were outnumbered.

Good luck I hope it all works out for you all

  15. Well I'm 60 and my partner of 6 years is 38 seems to work for us :)

Good on you mate ,,, similar ,, I am 56 wife 32 today ,, we have BOTH never been happier and more content , allthough only married 1 year now, time will tell , but all I can say is we are going from strenght to strenght.

As for the OP,S question , I had a gf of similar age ratio before my wife and the welcome / reception , whatever you call it from the close and distant family was about the same , treated with respect , given warm welcome into family , and sense that they breathe a sigh of relief their daughter is to settle with a stable western man , someone of an age who is gonna cherish and look after his younger wife. Both of them before had been married to Thai men ( wont bore you with the obvious details of how those relationships ended )

  16. Well done to the Thai goverment, just like in the uk your tesco club card will be used to track your spending, what you're buying and how much you are spending. Think very carefully before you get a tesco card, do you want the Thai goverment tracking your spending? Call me paranoid but the less any goverment knows about my finances (None of their business) the better.

    Brigante7.

What has the Thai government got to do with this? This is a Tesco Lotus loyalty card scheme. Yes they have data on you, but in the UK they use this to send you extra discount coupons each quarter towards goods you have actually bought. And it's great data for Tesco too. They know what is being bought at its stores by what age group. It helps them with store stocking for new stores etc, meaning you are much more likely to find what you want on the shelf. It is good news.

In the UK, goverment departments have access to the data, I know of atleast 1 man who was a taxi driver and was caught fiddling his income tax, they caught him through his tesco club card that he used to buy diesel. How did the relevant department get the data?

    Brigante7.

So the Inland Revenue did an investigation on him for fiddling his taxes and will have to have got a court order compelling Tesco to provide information. Standard routine in an investigation. But you are wrong to say the Government has access to the data because it does not without a court order. :) Mr paranoid ... have to smile.

Well if nothing else its good to see someone smile on here ,,, dont knock it
