  1. . I exchange and put into the account, when the echange rate is ideal. I exchanged 16,326 Euros into Baht last year at 49:1 , so now ( 39 : 1 ) I have made a profit of nearly 4,190 Euros !! Are you talking interest ??? That was 25 % !!!

Interesting way of looking at a 'profit'.

Presumably, if you need to transfer EUR 16,000 this year, and the rate is no better than 39, (which it won't be) will you report a loss of EUR 4,000 ?

  2. i don't remember liverpool's penalty appeal from the match. only remember juventus getting their penalty which i think was outside the area anyway and then platini scoring it. i didn't care. tragic, horrible day. RIP the 39.

    it wasnt a penalty

    Irrelevant, as was the match.

  3. I sure wished that was true.. free tickets out..

I find all these freebies good for tourism, but I live here and went to the ATM machine yesterday and was told the exchange rate was 32.14. I proceeded to get money from the machine and lo and behold the ATM exchange rate was 30.48 and there was an almost 5$ fee plus 150.00 badt to use the ATM. What kind of rip off are the banks here pulling now. They have always taken money off the top, but this is too much. Who could you complain to about this outrage. Just last week they were not doing this at my bank and now they are. I now have to figue out how to git around using the ATM machines here as I don't intend to pay this rip off amount for money exchange.

Please understand the facts. The banks "here" are not ripping you off. The exchange rate and the $ fee is set by the card issuing bank or their transacting agent.

Only the 150 Baht (still a rip off) goes to the local bank.

  4. For me Issan was where I had the happiest times of my retired life and being happy is my number 1 goal.

Issan may not be my final destination, but it is my next destination.

A good story but, apart from the first 6 months months entanglement, you make no mention wife/GF.

That almost makes it intruiging because most stories are driven by the relationships. It seems that you did it differently by exploring Thailand alone ? - are you now being drawn to Isaan by it's culture or for relationship reasons ?

Nosey, I accept, but I am genuinely interested to know where a lady/ladies fit into those 8 years of discovery.

  5. What I am waiting for is the Thai government to provide some proof of Taksin financially supporting the red shirt campaign. I believe they have this proof already; they are just holding the information until the right time. Holding their cards to their chest, so to speak. It is presumed he financially backed the whole thing; well we assume this, which now has now asserted itself as a truth. I think he did bank roll the whole thing; I would just like to see the financial trail (and there must be one).

Maybe the government are playing Taksin at his own game? Force him to give up his citizenship of Thailand and then problem solved; he came never come back without the right visa, and who is going to grant that for him?

I also sense that the evidence is there and I am also surprised that it has not been released. It would strengthen the case for extradition and would alienate him from the International community. It would also re-define the recent protests not as a fight for democracy, but a fight for Thaksin :)

Renouncing Thai citizenship would just alienate him from those on whom he feeds. Not a move that I think he would be prepared to make.

  6. chaimai ใช่ไหม?

at the very least, he appears to be the first big shot to have asked for farangs' input into something significant for the redevelopment of the capital city....

chaimai.... as a farang in thailand.... won't you give him the opportunity at least to try out his brilliant ideas.... pls?

i am sure there are many farangs who would contribute ideas and more....

if only they can be sure.... that their efforts and time.... are not wasted on some bureaucratic exercises....

and there will be also those who do not believe that anything can be accomplished in this vane....

let everyone who genuinely wants to.... whether you are pro or con to the initiative.... show up....

and express your concerns to your heart content concerning whatever is in your mind....

at the very least, it is a giant step toward the right direction.... bravo.... :D:D:D

Didn't you read the OP? It is our business. We've been asked for our opinion.

    Yes, I read the headline.

Do you really think that the opinion of Farangs will count for one iota ?

    I apologise.

I was overly cynical in my reaction to the Governor's initiative and got caught up in the "when have they ever listened to the Falang" school of thought.

On reflection this reaction was hasty and unfair. Whilst I shall never be totally convinced, I should at least applaud the initiative and give it every chance to succeed.

    Sorry :):D

  7. There are endless amounts of things to make Bangkok tourist/expat friendly but unhelpful, self righteous people like Chaimai is not one of them.

Not self-righteous at all - I was just waiting for you to provide an idea. In an earlier post you called for ideas from TV members - and criticised them - without putting something forward yourself.

You now have done (in a limted way) and I agree that better sign-posting would help tourists.

In terms of restoration I think of rebuilding and, for Central World, I go with the bigger and better school of thought. I am not in favour of a park - this is a main tourist area and should have appropriate attractions. The bulk of CW's customers were local and visiting Thais.

(I am now off to apologise to nakachalet for a somewhat cynical response to the Governers initial request)

  8. It is odd.

I watched the Bradford fire unfold on television - quite surreal, but I remember it all - vividly.

I was at Hillsborough but had no idea of the extent of the carnage until I travelled home. Again, I remember it like it was yesterday.

But Heysel, I remember nothing of the game only the disaster itself.

  9. Nationwide offers the best deal on exchange rates and fees. Even with the 1% they now charge on FE transactions it is still better than the 4.5% I paid for a long time with HSBC. Using Nationwide FLEX with Bank of Ayuddhaya ATMs goes round the 150bt Thai bank fee.

Are you sure that Bank of A is still free? :)

I tend to use the AEAON (avec Nationwide ) and have commented in the past that as a Japanese CC company they got round the rip off 150 bt shakedown.

agree that the NW is still tops.. :D

Am I right in thinking that is only free with the Mastercard cards rather than the normal VISA cards that are issued on the Flexaccount (or am I getting confused ?).

I would also like to know if BoA is free - I recall it being a bit and miss before.

  10. In my opinion it is ALWAYS worth going to Pattaya... No matter what the critics of Pattaya say, its a fun place and quite the holiday town.

    Go and enjoy it...

But yes, there are alot of Arabs, Indians and Russians there.

    And it is NEVER normal

Would that be a reflection of it's visitors Dave ? :)

  11. Please note that a visa entitles the holder to travel to Thailand and request admission to enter the country. The visa does not automatically guarantee entry in to Thailand. Entry is granted only at the discretion of the Immigration Officer on duty at the point of entry in to Thailand.

Entry was granted and the Immigration Officer obviously made a mistake. I don't think this policy applies to visa holders inconvenienced by incorrect entry stamping.

When you arrive it's a good idea to bookmark your visa with the arrival card. It's not always easy for busy immigration officers to spot visas in busy passports.

Maybe one day I, or others, may be in the same position. One very important question:-

Is it just a simple case of going to the Immigration Office, pointing out your Visa stamp and explaining that the officer made a mistake ?

  12. oh c'mon, i am sure he will be ok, the only problem he might get into is another lazy monkey that just miss his VALID AND PAID FOR VISA, so just help the distract guys to do their job properly wouldn't you? or they might even try to get a fat tip from you just because they can't see you have everything in order, during one of my renewal an officer was insisting that he could provide the stamp even if i didn't had the funds deposited at the bank as required, for 15k instead of the normal 4k(roughly), however, i kept repeating that the passbook was CLEARLY showing much more of what was required by law and for much longer time of what is required too, so, just stay on focus...and smile :)

I too really hope so and I am sure the matter can be resolved.

However, I renewed my Non O Visa this week and I recall seeing the fairly stark warning about the 'admitted until' date. I also remember being told that is this date that controls everything - the Visa expiry date is irrelevant.

I am not trying to scaremonger but I think Matt needs to get down to Immigration asap - which in fairness he is trying to do in Ubon.

  13. if i was you, i would go to the nearest immigration office and see if you can get rectified there, otherways in Bkk they will do it for sure and at no extra charge, in my case i had even to tell the guy at the entrance providing the tickets for the queue to press on his machine where it says "correction stamps" because he was just keeping looking at all the stamps on every page of my passport.......

Thanks very much for the info surayu, I'm obviously awake at 2am worrying about a potential 40 day overstay!! I feel much better after hearing from you. Next time I'm checking all stamps on arrival regardless. :)

Matt, sorry mate but I think you are in the sh!te. Look at this from the Thai consulate website:-

    ALL VISAS

Please note that if you remain in Thailand beyond the “admitted until” date in your passport you may be detained.

Please note that a visa entitles the holder to travel to Thailand and request admission to enter the country. The visa does not automatically guarantee entry in to Thailand. Entry is granted only at the discretion of the Immigration Officer on duty at the point of entry in to Thailand.

Now, I don't want to keep you awake worrying but it obviously needs sorting out. I KNOW there are brighter people on ThaiVisa.com who understand these things and I am sure their will be members who have experienced the same thing - and got round it :D .

I was always told to check the 'admitted until' before leaving the airport - your situation will be a reminder for me to do just that.

    Good luck.

  14. I am sure I have seen an article and footage of a Thai army sniper shooting Seh, and a report in either nation or BP that the press ran to the building where the shot came from. The press were told there is nothing to see here as a team of army personnell with rifles got into a black van and drove off.

LOL ... Democrat is putting forward sheer fantasy! The immediate reports from the scene said the shot came from the top of one of the buildings IN Lumpini. Later claims were a shot fired from the Dusit. The coroner hasn't given out much info yet.

This is typical redshirt disinformation. He won't be posting any confirming links :)

    Here is a clue.

Type in your computer in your internet browser. "www.google.com

In the search field type "army sniper kills seh daeng" or "sniper kills seh daeng"

From there you will get many options select one, and proceed to read the information or view the pictures.

From what you read and view form your own opinion if you wish to share it with us feel welcome.

    Thanks.

In the absence of the requested link to reportage/footage, I googled as suggested. I found these:-

Sean Boonpracong, international spokesman for the red-shirt movement, told the BBC he believed an army sniper had shot the general.

"We [the UDD] believe a sniper deployed by the CRES was behind the attack on Seh Daeng," UDD core member Kwanchai Praipana said on the main stage at the protest venue at Ratchaprasong commercial district on Friday morning.

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN) -- Thailand's army had nothing to do with the shooting of an opposition leader in downtown Bangkok, a military spokesman said Friday.

That is conclusive then, the reds say the army did it and the army said they did not.

..and you formulate your opinions based on this stuff ?

  15. If you know who shot Sah Daeng, why don't you share it with us (and international media, while you're at it)?

I am sure I have seen an article and footage of a Thai army sniper shooting Seh, and a report in either nation or BP that the press ran to the building where the shot came from. The press were told there is nothing to see here as a team of army personnell with rifles got into a black van and drove off.

These articles, AND footage, were in your own imagination or the real world ?

  16. I read it all, just for the sheer hel_l of it. I get the impression that Gman (in red) is a native English speaker, but his spelling and grammar fall somewhere short of atrocious. His point falls between 'I haven't a clue what he's on about' and '<deleted>'. I think I'll give all future missives a miss.

So where do you think HE was when the other kids were getting an education ?
