  1. OP, if you drive on any major road, you will be able to see those kites being sold on the side of the road.

Big selection of colours, but usually only one type of kite, more suitable for the kids than adults.

The only time I have seen them for sale by the side of the road was a few years back up by Chiang Mai.

  2. Would any of you good folks know the best place to buy a selection of kites?

The type that kids (and I suppose a few adults) fly, not the type used for kitesurfing etc.

    Thanks :-)

  3. Bali's the place mate, cheap as chips and crank 'em out by the hundreds they will.

I will definitely look into going to Bali.... checked it out online and it seems Ubud is the place, but none of the artists seem to have internet!

Still trying to check out Thailand, but no-one has been able to come up with a name, guess i'll have to do a bit of leg-work :-)

  4. I do know some artists but I'm not sure what you mean by cheap.

Also, can you say what subject matter you want, do you have any preferences with regard to style and do you want them framed or unframed?

It would be portraits and architectural paintings that I am looking for. Copied as true to a supplied photograph as possible and unframed.

    Thanks.

If you want to, you can post an idea of what you are happy to pay for each painting (or PM me if you prefer) and I am happy to pass the info on and see if they are interested or not. I can't promise anything because I have no idea what amount of money they are happy to work for, or indeed, if they want to do that kind of work.

You can rest assured I have no funny ideas about making a commission or anything, I would do it as a favour to the artists in question as I like them. If they are interested, I can of course give you their contact details and you can discuss the matter between yourselves. One is a student who has recently graduated so I thought they may be interested in making some extra cash, others are professional artists but they may be a little pricey....

EDIT: Sample photos and / or paintings of the type of thing you want would help them to quote more accurately as obviously the more detail you require, the longer each painting would take. Some of them do this type of work already apparently (I just asked). if you'd rather just supply samples and get them to send you a quote, instead of saying how much you are happy to pay, I guess that's fine too. It would be helpful to have some idea in advance though, so I don't waste your time and theirs.

    Cheers

    PM Sent :-)

  6. Does anyone know the email address or phone number of a good cheap artist that could produce oil and watercolour paintings for me?
I am looking to get about 20 done initially with more to follow at about 450mm x 600mm (18" x 24") if you know of someone that would be interested I'd be grateful if you could post their contact details.
I'm presently out of the country so unable to go and look at places such as Pattaya's Art Street.
    Thanks.

  7. Off season you may get something for less than 1000 but not on the beach the best places are mostly on the beach and about 1200 to 1400 a night is what we paid, as I remember one was White Sands Hotel up near the statue thats on the beach.:)

OK that's not too expensive, thanks

  8. Thinking of having a few days in Koh Samet in October and wonder if anyone has a suggestion for good accommodation? Don't want to spend much more than 1000 a night, and hoping for some nearby bars and beach. Any recommendations would be welcome. Thanks.

  9. The makeshift markets on Soi Baanzan and across the road from the back of Jungceylon are gone.

Does anyone know where they have moved to?

Does anyone know what is going to be built on the site?

Is it just the places selling T-shirts etc......... or have the food stalls all moved too?

  10. The one thing you can absolutely guarantee is that if you post anything positive about Thai women, or Thailand on here you will bring out every bitter, disgruntled jerk in SE Asia...and there are lots of them. Bear in mind that they chose to come and live here because they were bitter and disgruntled in their own country and many of them in a few other countries before arriving here. They arrive in Thailand...make all the same bad decisions about women and everything else that they probably made in other places and

blame the locals for it...esp the girls. There are many lovely Thai women and many lovely Thai people in general...and like everywhere else there are liars, cheats and crooks....

Those are the Thai's you will always hear about from these guys...who don't have the street smarts and common sense to know the difference in the first place...and probably never will. Just read some of the threads on the current political troubles here and you will get a good sense of the kind of foreign residents we have to suffer with.

    All the best to you.....

    Spot on.

  11. I think it would be fun,

Just like playing Cops and Robbers when you were a kid!

Yeah, your right, that was fun too. So which one are you? Oh wait...I know already. :)

That was probably a brilliant response (apart from the spelling mistake of course) but I am clearly not as smart as you and need it explaining to me........ so what did you mean?

  12. At the last election Thaksin's party didn't receive the most votes. They won the most seats.

I see, so is there proportional representation in Thailand? If not then the number of votes are irrelevant and the number of seats won the only thing that matters, or are you just using this to try to cloud the issues at hand?

  13. Sorry, I was just using the magic word invoked by Thaksin and UDD. I just thought "democracy" was what this whole fight was about. We all know there is no such thing as a "perfect" democracy that truly represents the "of the people, for the people, by the people". But it could be said that the reason Thaksin was removed was because he was taking down the safeguards that protected Thailand from becoming a dictatorship- it was well on its way to being a government of Thaksin, for Thaksin and by Thaksin- the interests of the "people" only came into it when he was deposed.

I understand what you're saying, all I have been trying to say is that all of these feelings of injustice and resentment are only going to have any chance (albeit slim) of being put to bed when everybody believes that the government are in place because that is what the majority want.

  14. Democrats are legally and legitimately leading the nation now and have a responsibilty to do what is right -

That is how the middle / upper classes that want their grip on power to remain at any cost see it. However the lower / working classes see it rather differently, and there is the reason for the tension, if Abhisit and his bosses really wanted what was best for Thailand as a whole then surely holding an election and actually sticking with the result would end any feelings of injustice.

I am not a Thaksin apologist, I would just like the majority to get their voice heard, sadly they are unlikely to ever get a fair crack of the whip.

The lower / middle classes voted. Their votes were counted. Their party could not put a coalition together. So they wait until the next election. That is how it works. What is so hard about that to understand? BTW, if its such a class thing, why is the south so Democratic party leaning? Or are there no working / poor in the south? What about Bangkok - funny, I seem to see quite a few working / poor around, but Bangkok leans towards the Dems. Maybe Thaksin's popularity has something to do with all the money spread around by TRT/PPP to buy votes in the north and northeast. And his carried through threat to cut off money for any province that dared vote against him. Is that how you define "democracy"?

Do you see the word democracy in my reply? No? So why would you think I'm trying to define democracy?

Government of the people, for the people, by the people was a fair definition I always thought.........

  16. Go to a translation service, get the document translated.

Get a taxi, go to the MFA (Chaeng Wattana)

Go to the 3rd floor, take a number and wait.

    Give to the Officer.

    Return next day to collect.

I will say, I got the people at the translation agency to go to Chaeng Wattana for me - so glad I did, they charged 500 baht if I remember correctly and were there for hours , probably would have cost 250 baht in the taxi!
