  1. I had exactly the same situation, my wife got a job in bkk in February. I worked in SAP consulting, moved to Thailand with her, took a leave of absence from my previous employer and started looking for a job in bkk. There were lots of positions open suitable for me, but in practice only for Thais. Even multinationals recruiting to english-speaking projects only wanted Thais.

So I took a job in Beijing, with a contract stating I can work part of the time in the companys bkk office. That way I didn’t have to recruit myself through Thais. For example Chinese welcome foreign employees and knowledge in quite a different way than thais. Now I need to travel a lot and spend quite a lot time in bjj but that’s ok with me.

So maybe you could consider taking a job in e.g. Singapore and do some traveling? That is, if you don’t iinsist on being in bkk all the time. For me working in different places just makes the experiences richer.

  2. Thanks for your answers. Anything above 50 usd a day sounds very reasonable to me, if tax-free, since the hotels are anyway paid for and I don't plan to eat in expensive restaurants daily. I'll have to clear this with local hr people after arriving in Bangkok next week to figure out also the company policy.

and no, I'm not at least as short as the friend of Snow White .. :o

  3. Finally got a job in Bangkok, in a subsidiary of an european company. :o I had to accept a deal, which includes lots of travelling to China though. The deal is I either get my expenses in China paid or a daily allowance for the travel. Does anybody know, if there is anyhting like a tax-free "daily allowance" in use in Thailand? This is the practise in some european countries, but I don't have a clue about Thailand -neither has my future boss.

    Thanks.

  4. Thanks for your very good answer, Steve.

Starting a business in Thailand sounds doable. I’m still wondering whether it its worthwhile in my case, since I wouldn’t be working in Bangkok regurarly, most of the time I would be traveling in other countries. My client wouldn’t be in Thailand either, I’d only use the clients Bangkok premises for working and no money would change owners in Thailand. I’d just have my regular address in Thailand.

The visa wouldn’t be an issue for me – that is already arranged by my wifes employer, one international organization.

One thing that makes me wonder are the “potential complications” you referred to, what might those be...

Thanks again for your message, would I start considering the business in Thailand option seriously, I’d be in contact, your www pages seemed professional.

  5. Hi,

Here's a short description of my situation:

i'm moving to Thailand from Europe, VISA is arranged allready via my wifes work there. My issue is how/whether to work there. I've already discussed with my present client and they would let me work at their Thailand office as an external consultant. The problem is, if I start a company in Europe and move my permanent address to Thailand, I suppose work done there would require a work permit in Thailand etc, even though all financial transactions might happen in Europe. I haven't even imagined yet what starting the business in Thailand would mean...

Anyway, I've someone likes to comment this or even has similar experiences, please feel free to reply.

  6. I’m moving to Bangkok shortly and should rent a condo. Any ideas of areas to be considered? Many of the rentals seem to be around Sukhumvit, but any other ideas? How is for example Ratchathewi? The monthly rent could be around 20 - 35k or of course also less. Quite near central Bangkok anyhow.

    Thanks!
