  1. I thought I read somewhere that being a digital nomad was kind of kind of kind of OK to do.

    http://www.chiangmaicitynews.com/news.php?id=4366

What if I want to work in Thailand?

If you are working for a Thai company, you will need a non-immigrant (type B) visa and then a work permit in order to work legally.

If you are a 'digital nomad' running your own business on the internet, the immigration office says you can do this on a tourist visa.

This was the response by Pol. Col. Rutphong Sanwanangkun, Superintendent of Chiang Mai Immigration when asked directly about "people working online" on Aug 21, 2014

  2. Done, but had to laugh at this:

What else do you use your cell phone for / ท่านใช้โทรศัพท์เพื่อจุดประสงค์อื่นนอกเหนือจากข้างบนหรือไม่ โปรดระบุ

    Uh...... calling people!

Ya, it's certainly not the best written survey that's for sure. Girlfriend laughed as this as well :)

  3. Hey guys.

There's no malice in this and I'll post the bank statement of the sent money after she reaches her quota.

No I don't own the domain, it's a free service provided by http://freedns.afrai...nd_for_mooo.com

The survey is most likely to be used for marketing I assume, they're performing it in various countries including Thailand. Unfortunately, currently Thailand has a flood, but this isn't opportunistic, it's just bad timing.

She's getting paid for it (which will help us with our flood problems) and sending some of the money over to flood victims as well. Win win for a couple seconds of your time.

If there were no floods, she'd be doing it on the streets and keeping all the cash instead of donating any of it. We're not actually supposed to be doing it online, but I'm a programmer and spent 2 hours to put up the site. It seems like harassing people around a flooded PATA to fill out a survey would also be in bad taste. We've also had to evacuate out of Bangkok, since our house is flooded and the friends house we went to also flooded.

Thanks to all those who have submitted it so far. We're about 1/2 way there.

  4. Last week before the floods my girlfriend got a job where she was to complete a survey about mobile phone usage in Bangkok. Unfortunately two days ago, our house near PATA in Arun Amarin got flooded. We've moved our things and headed over to another province to escape the water.

We decided it would be a good idea to donate some of the proceeds she'll get from completing the survey towards the flood relief efforts. We need 200 more to finish complete and she'll be sending ArsaDusit 3000 THB once it's complete.

    Here's the link:

    http://mobilequestions.mooo.com

The survey is short and the questions are easy and non-invasive, so if you can spare 2 minutes and fill it out, you'll be helping her out and donate some cash to flood relief. Sorry to post this, but we've got no other way to get it completed now.

    ---

As a warning to people still in Bangkok, if you see water starting to pool near your house and you have the means to leave, start preparing now. It really only takes 2-3 hours for the waters to rise 60cm and leaving after that isn't fun. Take it from someone who's already had to leave.

This is what my area looks like

My soi is even worse hit.

  5. From a thaidroidupdate.com via Google Translate

He said he would sell the two separate types of 850/2100 MHz and 900/2100 MHz frequencies available to the network, both AIS and DTAC (perhaps with a Prince of True Move), but to limit the frequency of the word. the Samsung seems to be limited to the Software, if we remove the non-Samsung's New Flash Rom, we can use the 3G spectrum has four well offline.

While this sucks, I'm ok with it as long as the hardware hasn't changed. I can fix the software.

  6. GalaxyS2 is quad band 3G & quad band GSM. It also has NFC. I managed to figure out, that the model being sold in Thailand is the 16GB model & not the 32GB model. I wasn't able to get information on the chipset it will be using.

If the phone I go and pick up doesn't have quad band 3G or NFC, I will claim shenanegans when I go and pick up my phone. I'll also be pissed because any deviation from the normal will cause me problems when flashing custom roms. These are two of the three reasons I purchased this phone, the other being LED flash. I purchased pre-order at the mobile expo and before I purchased I specifically asked these questions. To be honest though, I knew more about these phones than the staff and they might have just been agreeing with me to get me to shut up. The phones should be arriving now and I'm curious to hear first reports on people who have the TrueMove models in their hands.

    Here's the specs;http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9100_galaxy_s_ii-3621.php

Let me know when you get the phone in you hands.

  7. @channyshort the girls there are useless. Find the guy. Most of the staff know that hockey is on in the mornings, I've probably seen about 6 games there already and I'm usually not the only one there. The morning staff is useless and lazy as fuc_k, so just keep pestering them until they put it on. It's ASN channel which is between some channel between 100 and 120 (i think it's 106 or 108).

@lomatopo just because the fact the announcers are Canadian, doesn't change the fact that they are in fact horrible at their jobs. Rather be listening to Jim Hughson over the games. Hughson also does commentary for Baseball.

Don't believe me, check out the commentary over the same play:

NBC Commentary for last goal in Game #1

Summary: ".....blank....played on back, challenged 3 and onside KESLER gave it on the cook (?) defeated (?) SCORES!!!! TORRES!!!!!"

CBC Commentary for last goal in Game #1

    Summary: proper play by play

Those guys NBC don't provide any insightful information and pretty much just yell the players names louder as they get towards the net. They're even worse when nothing's going on in the game. I can only imagine trying to listening to these guys call a game over the radio, wouldn't work.

    Game #6

Gonna head to Mulligans for Game #6 at 7am on Tuesday morning June 14h if anyone would like to join me for early morning caesars.

Shocking Trivia: Last time Canuck's won a Stanley Cup? Never.

  8. I was at Mulligans for the first game, but I didn't see anyone else there. Managed to run into three tourist Vancouverites looking for the game, so we watched it together.

The quality of the streams isn't great, but works. I used LiveTV.ru for the last game.

I'll probably be going to mulligans for the next one, if anyone wants to join.

But ya, as you mentioned the ASN has the US commentary which is fuc_king horrible. No wonder American's don't like hockey.

  9. Alright, sorry about not keeping up with this thread. I've had some Canadian friends in town and I've been watching the games with them. They're back in Vancouver now, so I'm looking to form a crew to watch the cup with.

I've been watching games at Mulligans 24 hour Irish bar on Khao Sarn. For the early games they have a 160 THB breakfast buffet. The buffet kind of sucks, but you can get some fruit, bread, yogurt, coffee, eggs & bacon. Worth it just for the coffee & the game to be honest. Beers also available, for the early drinkers (or nail biting 3rd periods). Here's the link http://www.mulligansthailand.com/

ASN plays all the hockey games. It's in the TrueVisions Silver & Platinum package. ASN isn't included in the Gold package, which most smaller bars seem to have.

You can check TrueVisionsTV.com for the ASN schedules. It's been wrong in the past, but usually is on point.

http://www.truevisionstv.com/trueworld.aspx?key=&date=02/06/11&w=0&chid=108&pk=0&mode=3 (after loading, sort by time)

Game #1 on at 7am, 12pm & 7pm on June 2nd. They all appear to have 3 hour time slots, so they should all be showing the entire game. In the previous rounds, if they didn't have a full 3 hour time slot, they'd usually switch to another program in the 3rd period.

With that said, it looks like our options are open to The Tavern & Mulligans. I'm interested in seeing the game at 7am as if I don't my phone blows up with the results from friends back home. My vote is for Mulligans.

  10. Some say Thailand has a holiday on April 13th because of Thailand, but secretly all Canadian's know this is because the NHL playoffs are starting.

So with that said, which bars in Bangkok show the games?

From a quick google of past years it seems that Larry's Dive Bar and Sports Academy have shown in the past.

    http://www.sabkk.com/

    http://www.larrysdive.com/index.asp

With that said, anyone know of bar's in bangkok which will have the NHL playoffs going on? Personally looking for Vancouver vs. Chicago games.

NHL fans get in here. Let's make something out of this.

    Found some more promising bars:

  11. Is it possible to setup a non-blackberry phone (android) on the TrueMove PrePaid unlimited EDGE/GPRS BlackBerry plan? I've been toying around with it, but the default TrueMove APN (internet, user: TRUE, pass: TRUE) still takes data costs off your balance. I believe I have to use the APN blackberry.net, but when I set this up, no data is coming through.

I vaguely remember a friend having to register on http://truemove.blackberry.com/ to get the data working, but I could be wrong. Either way, I don't have a PIN and can not find out how to generate a fake one to register my IMEI. Any assistance on how to set this up would be appreciated. If you're 100% sure it's not possible, also let me know so I stop wasting my time.

    Thanks in advance.

  12. Between 9.04 and 9.10 they introduced a higher integration with all communication type applications. You'll notice that your IM, Email and other communications are integrated more deeply into Gnome. While I feel this is a good direction for them to be going, I felt the new default IM application was a little rough around the edges and I switched it back to Pidgin. I think this is the right direction and they're talking about integrating more social applications into this framework in 10.04.

The biggest reason to update from 9.04 to 9.10 for me, was the faster bootimes and shutdown times. This is important to me, as I use a laptop and I'm always taking it down and back up. 10.04 completely removes HAL, which they claim will also improve boot times. Awesome. Ubuntu has also mentioned they will be redoing the 9.10 boot up process for 10.04. This is great, because while the 9.10 boot process was much faster, it didn't provide any details as to what was booting up and would make it harder to debug if you had problems.

In 10.04, they're changing the default search engine in Firefox to Yahoo! This seems kind of silly to me because who the heck uses Yahoo!, but they're doing it because Yahoo! (we assume) is providing a better revenue sharing deal than Google. Fair enough. I have never paid for Ubuntu and I feel anything that can help boost their revenue is a good thing. Here's more information on this: http://arstechnica.com/open-source/news/20...-with-yahoo.ars

I usually switch to the latest version of Ubuntu when it comes out. While this has been causing me less and less problems, I think as a rule of thumb to avoid trouble, wait at least 1 month after the release to do so. I'm an idiot though and will pay no attention to my own warnings and mess my machine up with the new software and probably spend 1 or 2 un-productive days, resolving the early issues and complaining in the forums.

  13. I've got internet banking with Bangkok Bank.

One of the reasons was to try to fund my UK credit card online. However it seems I can't do that - I printed off a document like they asked in order to add a 3rd party international transfer to my list.

Does anyone here transfer money by the internet to the UK?

What would be the best way to fund my credit card? It would cost 28 pounds per transaction(normal transfer), according to the bank.

I thought, prehaps naively, that it would be free online. :o

28 Pounds seem like a tonne of money for an international wire transfer. In US / Canada it's roughly $30 dollars (which is still rather expensive).

I would recommend some options to reduce these fees.

    1. Don't use your foreign credit card, so you don't have to pay the bill. Or get a local BKK credit card at BK Bank.

    2. Transfer a tonne of money to your credit card, thus reducing the fees and amount of times you'll need to transact. In North America with the cards I use, you can actually put money ONTO your credit card and then use it like a debit card reducing the balance.

There's also a good service I've read about from XE.com to transfer money internationally and get the cheapest fees and best conversion rates. You can read more about this service here: http://www.xe.com/fx/how.htm
