  1. Hi Guys,

I haven't posted in a few years...gots to get the house payments down far enough before i can leave and try a life of farming like we once did before the war in cambodia. We have two plots of land, 65ha in kompong cham, 75ha near sisophon where 50ha gots 3plus years of eucalyptus, 25 has been cleared and plowed. I'm heading to down to visit and recon a 17ha plot northeast of siam reap closer to thai border.

I would really like to meet all of you one of these days, if anything bbq, charred meat, and beer session just to listen to you fish farm veterans.

love reading all your comments and wisdom of fish rearing... I would really like to try my hands on tilapia and catfish. There is a guy in florida who started tilapia in a big plastic pool, don't think i can do the same in Portland, Oregon...too dayum cold!

Thanks guys and keep on posting. Thanks TT, by the time I start. I'll be to you as you to RBH and Ozzy now.

  2. Finner...what did you do to her? thanks for the help as always...if you guys are near Surin...then, there is a possibility we might have a chance to meet? my brothers plantation is between poipet and sisophon. Although Surin might be further east...at least we are closer to the thai/cambo border. If...i ever get a chance to visit...so busy with two jobs...

on another note, my brother, two other cambos and a few thais made way to, his word...."very large" tractor dealer near bangkok. he was in heaven of course....heheeheh...anyhow, he metioned the dealer, no wait, the translater and finder guy, mentioned to him a Ford 6640 had an asking price of $25,000. I thought this was a little too much...so we are back at the FT-90 again. He couldn't remember the dealer's name. He wanted a used Ford, but at the asking price, my family decided to just get new.

I would love to be there myself for purchase of something like this...due to my work, I can barely leave for a week....it sux!

He sent me a dvd of the plantation...from what we saw...we can definitely use a few medium size tractors and a few mechanical buffalo's, but for now, it'll be the ft-90 and a mech buff. I am investigating importing a chinese FOton 30-50hp, do you have any thoughts..?

Thanks...P.S. please say thanks to the GF for translating for a fellow Cambodian.

  3. Finner,

You seem to be wealth of knowledge! Thank you very much. THis will give me more general picture regarding pricings. WOW...I can almost get 3 used Ford 8210 for one FT90!!!!

"Plow my way huh" yea we need the HP due to a few large plots of land my family have. ONe day I'll move back and work the field with him when my engineering days are numbered.

BTW...are you Finnish? Regardless..."finner" sounds/looks like, "Fin" as "Finnish", "Fin", Finland...just reminds me of a Finnish woman I'd met in Singapore during one of my visits back in 1996. Whats funny was she sent me a few letters after I left and headed to other parts of Soutwest Asia....about 6 months ago...I was able to track her back in Helsinki...on Facebook. WOW...the memories when younger and in the military...at 23..and she was 29...the most beautifull thing I'd ever seen.

Okay...thanks much for the info..that will help me much.

  4. Try this web site

    http://www.eurotrac.co.th

I was driving between Chok Chai and Nong Ki and stopped at a place that was selling tractors. They were all used tractors but I believe they were most likely imported as parts and reassembled here.

The one that impressed me most was a "Euro 55DI" it had 8 hours on the clock ( maybe a new clock??) but looked new and was for sale for B380,000 which inlcuded the mandatory bladeat the front and one implement at the back ( I suppose that means either a disc or rotary.

As I had never heard of a "Euro" I just typed in Euro 55DI into gooogle and it come up with the above site.

By the way they also had used used Fords, Kubota's and Iseki's for sale.

AAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH...I knew there was mistake in translation...FT 90 and Eurotrac..not just Euro! Thanks for your help. I email the above biz...the lady that responded would not give me pricings. However, she did tell me the contact to a Cambodian Eurotrac dealer.

Is there anyway I can get someone in helping me get pricing for an FT90...just so i can confirm what my brother is talking about?

    Thanks

  5. Thanks for the input Maize, much appreciated!

I've sent an email to Mit Alai Tractor requesting a list of what they have for sale; new and used! We just doing research at the moment and won't buy until this october.

What's strange is that m brother mentioned that there aren't any used Fords available in thailand. He could possibly means just areas close within the borders(or just dam_n lazy), becaues it seems Fords are everywhere in SE Asia...used ones albeit.

According to him, Ford is the best brand in terms of used tractors to use due simplicity, robustness, and available of parts. He just couldn't find any. we'll see when Mit Tractor responds.

  6. Hey guys,

My brother in Cambodia keeps telling me about this brand of tractor "EURO" model ST90.

I can't seem to find anything about this....closest google search netted, New Holland TS90.

I'm pretty sure he made a boo boo...can anyone help decypher what he's talking about?

price was something in the $30-$35k USD.

    Thanks,

    Sok

  7. Thanks for all the replies! Its really contradicting hearing y'all words...yet I also hear of company starting plantations of Jatropha.

Jatoil just started 500ha in Vietnam...and there are various others I've read about with SE Asia and abroad.

anyhow...my acerage has drop from 300ha to 220. I'm in the process of purchasing some equipment at the moment and just recieved a few quotes from chinese mfgers. Not bad for prices.....!

I'm not to worried about fueling these equipments, I'll pay for 100% diesel just up to harvest of the first year.....after that...any of y'all can come by and get some!

  8. Here is something for any of y'all to chew on.....

okay, let say i was able to grow 300 ha of jatropha nuts purely for fuel use. Lets say i'm able to de-hull the nut from the meaty flesh and just have raw nuts ready to crush/expell and ship.

who would be interested in getting some these, or maybe just the oil after extraction?

I would like to hear what y'all have to input on this subject.

    Thanks,

    Sok

  9. Hello all,

I would like to know or be recomended as to what type of containers would best be suited for shipping raw and un-cracked nuts for ocean freight?

I've shipped a few containers from LA to Laem Chabang...but those were regular iso closed containers.

    Looking forward to some insight.

    Thanks,

    Sok

  10. Whats a village tea-leaves?

Well, I've got a 60m x 40m x 5m reservoir/pond....that was dug a few months ago. From the rain alone, its filled up already. According to my brother, there are signs of frogs, fish, and other creatures calling it home.

This was a dedicated reservoir, so we would welcome any aqua animals...so i'm pretty sure there would be preys and predators combatting each other. As to what, I haven't a clue...maybe some of them Pla chon will walk in some day and settle in.

  11. man...theres more here than just "farming in thailand" bunch-o-hicks, beer, and HP.....ahahahahahah....my crowd...

isn't compression inherent(sp) in regards to turbo chargin? gots to raise them octane!

hahaha..sorry, i'm nursing a cold one and trying to sleep, n listening to Allen Jackson "it's 5 o'clock somewhere"

  12. Does anyone have a farmgate price per kilo for the Red Claw Yabby / yabbie?

    redclaw.jpg

    ( Cherax quadricarinatus )

A farmer in the NT claims to get A$18-20/ kg.

Call it 500bt/kg for Thailand and you'd have to sell at least 150kg/month.

    to gross 75000bt!

Yabbies weighing in between 75 -100gms might command 750bt/kg.

    Is that feasable?

    Is the market out there?

    cheers :o

Okay...i've read the "Yabbys" in thailand, crawfish, and this...I know Dhakar says he doesn't have anymore for brood stocks...so,

where can i get some for trials/test in my ponds....?

here in Portland, Oregon...a chinese seafood store "OM Seafood" were selling crawdads at $3.99/lbs. 3 weeks ago were the last batch. the owner says they get them from farmers in the sacramento deltas.

I lived in Sacramento and used to venture into the rice fields and harvest these bad boys before the owner rolls up and tells us to take a hike off his rice fields.

    oh...hehehehe...check these babies out!

  13. Hi,

I am planning to plant 55hectares(1ha=6.25rai) of cassavas. I already purchased the land.

Some of the land is still virgin(with shrub). some is already cultivated with cashew.

-I am planning to plough the cultivated land in November. Is it possible? but i think it's impossible to find cassava root in november.

-And do the rest in March-April, after cleaning the shrub land.

The problem is my virgin land is gonna give very little yield during the first year coz of too much big tree root and i don't have tractor.

    My questions are:

Is it possible to improve yields during my first year?

Wat kind of variety to choose for me?

Can i get some cassava root in november?

Is fertilizer will improve my yield for my shrub land?

i'll be very gratefull for Any of ur comments?

    I am totally new

    Best regards

Welcome to TV "Farming in Thailand"....although i can't answer your questions at the moment...I'm pretty sure the more experience members will jump in when they have time.

I believe one of the gurus of casava is "Khonwan", hopefully he or someone of experience will be able to help you...it takes time cus they too busy with their plantation...or if the farangs...always after a few cold ones like me...which is cool! hahahaha.

  14. I am planting 638 per rai for a total of approx 280 rai. I'm kinda worried I might not get it done before the raining season ends.

I'm also trying to build a few reservoirs north and south of the property with approx 16 rai. The reservoir is in planning stages for now.

I won't make a visit till this december...for sure then, i will have many pictures to share.

  15. Jim,

Small world ey? In regards to my land, its in the begining stage of ploughing. Initially my brother was able to source/hire 3 tractors for the work...but couldn't get it cept for 2. Good news came over the weekend of acquiring 3 more...therefore, we should get the ploughing done by the end of this month.

The land has never been farmed. We had finalize the deed/paper and commence straight to clearing. Since my brother (who is currently living there) already has 13 hectres of eucalyptus...we decided that what we initially start with my land.

Due to my work, "Application Engineer for a company that supplies Freightliner (Daimler Trucks North America), I won't make to visit Cambodia till the Xmas holiday, each and every year....unless i quit. hahahahahaha! I'm only 35 so, that might not be an option yet...actually, i'm working in hopes of saving enough to buy a few tractors next year. I don't know much of the availability of Ford or John Deere in Cambodia...but, according to my brother....Ford is the King of tractors there. I myself like John Deere due to my experience as sales engineer for an OEM Hvy Equipment Mfgr out of Hillsboro.

If things goes well with the plantation...my plan is to acquire more land for other ventures. The sole purpose of course is to make a comfortable living...and ultimately provide some work for local villages next to or near Batambang...where I was born.

  16. Trying to make own Biodiesel out of used oil ....went through online resources and my question is did anyone try to make it at home and

Where to get Methanol ,which is part of the ingredients for making Biodiesel, in Thailand ? thanks mbox

    mbox,

i'm looking into this also...in the states, any chemical supplier can get methanol in whatever quatities. haven't been to thailand, but i'm sure a business that supplies chemical might be able to help you.

please let us know when you find them.....

  17. Gary,

you need to distribute the tractors weight on a larger surface area. The paddle wheel just helps in locomotive force but little of what you are trying to do...keeping afloat.

I've seen pictures of farm tractors in the states with big ole swamp tires. I would imagine using something like that should help in this situation. maybe add two more tires to the back and front, one on each wheel?

  18. Hello All!

I'm new here. This will be my 3rd post, the first was just introducing myself in the new topic forum. I'm jumping in here because I have 50 hectres in cambodia north of Batambang and slightly south of Aranya....

The land has never been used before....and it is now in the 4th day of ploughing. My oldest brother lives in Batambang and has euca plantation on 13 hectres. I don't know what species his is, but according to him its an inferior type for the area/soil/land.

For my 50 hectres, he says will get from supplier in thailand, after 3-4 years, is initial harvest...then the second batch will spring from the first root and possible of multiple trunks. He mention that whomever supply him with the sapplings will come check the ecua out after so many years to verify all is good for them.

After reading this thread, his words resembles what you guys has been discussing. maybe just for quick turn around for biomass.

someone mentioned its been known that company sends out people to assist in determining the best stock to use for various land if plantation is of 100 rai or more.

    i have 50 hectres(6.25 rai/hectre) = approx 312 rai.

can someone help me with contact info or who i can get with in this area....? oh, we will also be building water storag man-made lakes nor and south of the property....and let the yearly rainfall fill it...hopefully anyways?

Please help...if anything just to learn more so as to understand this whole side business. My brother doesn't speak english, and I can speak cambodian..but understand just up to basic coversation level.

    Thanks,

    Sok
