Please make it clear that it's not a tractor you're driving but in fact a racing quad for which you do not need a WP.

Have a nice time in the desert, it should be safer than Barnsley. Bob

  2. I recommend against the pla nin. they reproduce so fast that you can never feed them enough. You end up with thousands of small fish and no big ones. Try pla duk and pla suway.

If you put Barramundi with the Pla Nin they will eat the Pla Nin fry and you will quickly get some very large Barramundi and some great sport. Look on youtube. GB

  3. oh, and by the way....watch your testicles if you feel like taking a dip.

The plan was strictly a fish pond, not a pool. But I hated the dirty old earthen pond full of weeds. Now that I see the concrete and rock banks taking shape it may be too inviting on a hot day. I am thinking of a diving board off the sala...

Forget ball coppers. Barramundi seem to be one of the best sport fish. They will take bait, spinner or fly. If you stock with Tilapia, the Barramundi will keep the overstocking under control. They are available as fingerprints and grow rapidly

Fingerprints should read fingerlings. Predictive spelling. I hate it. GB

  5. GB Thanks for the info on ratio's. I have a column filter connected to the fish tank as well as the grow beds.I am going to try adjusting the water output so two thirds of the water goes to the column filter and the other third goes to the grow beds. Will let you know next week if it works or not.

Pic of the column filter. This is a vortex filter that works very wellattachicon.gifDSC05574.JPG

The seedlings I started were doing well for the first week then they stopped growing. When I checked the root system I found they were clogged with fish excrement high in nutrients. I think by diverting two thirds of the water will work.

Any advise you can give will be gratefully appreciated

    Thanks

you can also put worms into the media, they will help by eating some detrius and clean up the roots  contact Wormfarmer for a supply  you wont need many because they will breed  you can feed the surplus to the fish  win win win

  6. I have to agree with you sayonarax that you need experience with fresh water fish before attempting aquaponics. 6 months ago I bought 2 male and 4 female redclaw crayfish. I now have about 500 and to date I have not lost one. I also have 100 Tilapia. I consider myself experienced in keeping and breeding aquatic animals but am still learning aquaponics. The welfare of the fish will always come first before the plants. I still have a lot to learn about aquaponics. The problem I am facing at the moment is the question of balance. The volume of water in my big raceway tank is far greater than the volume in the growbeds. This is giving the plants too much nutrients and it is clogging up the roots. At the same time the water going back to the fish tank is not being purified by the plants. I have put the system on hold at the moment but will re-plumb the growbeds to the small raceway tank which is holding 40 Tilapia fish.

There are hundreds of videos about aquaponics but nothing beats hands on experience and a little commonsense.

After reading your post, I, as GB, was left a little confused.

if you want to operate a system without additional filters then the growbeds have to be double the volume of the fish tanks. you will not have a successful system unless you adopt this ratio  GB

  7. You need to be experienced with rearing fresh water fish before even attempting this...

As an aquarium hobbyist ive spent a good 18mths understanding and perfecting my fish keeping skills.

I really dont like the dyi jobs on youtube who just toss a few fish in a box.

It takes a lot more knowledge and experience then ya basic DWC setup

Could you please explain  you say that you need experience before attempting this. xunsure.png.pagespeed.ic.E7Vo3qsmeC.png How do you get experience without attempting this.

  8. I worked a career of night entertainment business for a period of 18 years, had a good reputation, within the top choices and was always head hunted and always made my bosses wealthy. I was an expert in my field with my marketting skill and tricks up my sleeves, made high yearly remuneration package.

But i wanted to get out of the rat race badly, i missed my baby boy and my loving wife very badly in Thailand (back then)......so i make plans and then work the plans accordingly...

Sometime it's jush a hunch that things will work out. Through feasibility studies and comparison. A lot of research on possibility, market, margin, P&L, bottom line...effort, obstacles, trial & error and "if he can make it, so can i" believes and "i will do it better" type of mind set...

One needs to study market saturations and share of a piece of of the pie.

Before i decided to leave for Thailand, i already knew my wife has 11 rai of land inherited with endless flow of water. I research for the best possibility of farming produces with a good income. I ended up with an integrated farm of layers and fishes. I adapted to what is best for my operational capability, sticked to the fishes and loose the layers (i worked my catfish farm for 5 years alone, hired 2 farmhands after i expanded further and not work anymore). Evolved to changes, upgraded my skill level by researching through internet, spending thousands of hours studying high value information and analyzing materials and cycle after cycle of trials to achieve a better yield and production. Started small and expanded accordingly. Have a fighting spirit, never bow down to hardship and always work smart (very smart)...

You need to start some where before you become an expert... Question is what is holding you back and what is pushing you out to do it...

I agree with all you say. You learned the fish business from the ground up, learning from your mistakes and from others. You didn't invest your hard earned money into a scheme that you had no idea whether it is viable or not that relies for its success on other people's expertise. If you haven't the knowledge how do you judge if your "experts" know what they are doing?

Everyone should be encouraged to start, but do the research first, and a lot of it.

  9. Thanks for the helpfull replies guys !

The area of Nakon Chaisi is full of fish / shrimp farms . The option I have as mentioned is to take on Upto 4 plots although I can take just 1 or 2.

Its purely an investment outlook , there are several plots allready taken care of by a team of people that manage the fish on behalf of all the individual owners and costs are split between all and I am able to utilise this base of farmers for any of the plots I take on.

The options have been offered to me first , although I know there isnt a shortage of takers should I decline.

Ill take a while to go through all your posts and suggestions so far and see if it is viable from my position and what the risks are .

    Thanks so far !

Never, never, never put money into something you know nothing about. Stick to things you have expertise in.

  10. Hi Dasboot,

Thanks for sharing so much of your information and experience. Ive got the aquaponics bug and and am eager to see some fruit!!

My PH is good to go, the filtration is always a challenge but it works, I use a 200 liter buried tank with 65(ish) talapia of varying size and maturity. On top of the fish tank is a grow bed (black concrete mixing bucket) and I use golfball sized lava rock media. In the middle of it all, I have a bell siphon which gives me about a 15 minute fill and drain cycle.

Generally speaking, the system processes work properly however I just dont get much growth. Its been more than a year, loads of time and energy put into it however with these results, Im nearly ready to give it all up. Do you have any thoughts or suggestions which might turn my system from a fancy fish tank into a productive AQ system?

    Thanks!

My guess is that the media is too large. I wouldn't use anything bigger than pea gravel. You should be able to sow seed directly into the bed. With smaller media I think you will get a better root growth with more nutrient absorption that promotes growth.

  11. i started an aquaponics system 1 week ago, an ibc 1000l tank, 2 300l growbeds filled with gravel the kind of gravel they use for concrete 3/4. started with 5 goldfish to get the system to start planning on introducing tap tim fish next week. i just trow in seeds and after 2 days alrdy i got sprouts.

Only problem i got now is that my water is becomming green, need to make a lid on top to keep the sunlight out biggrin.png

Did you mean 2 x 300L growbeds? If so it's not big enough for the bio -filter to work efficiently. You need at least to have double the water volume.

To reduce the heat cover the whole area with a shade net canopy.

BTW. The green water is not a problem for tab tim but the heat could be

To clarify the growbed size, you need at least 2000L of gravel for the bio-filter to work efficiently

  12. Hello All, thanks Scoop1 for the calcium nitrate info.

The husk pieces in this pic is what runs Bt.80 for the

big bag, have not seen this wide of tray before.

    Rice555

    Two questions

Do you plant seeds directly into growing medium or in seed trays?

How often do you have to change the growing medium?

    Thanks. Bob

  13. If you cannot find one make one. My 14year old grandson made one 2 weeks ago. He looked on YouTube. Polystyrene box 25watt bulb and holder. A digital thermometer a bowl of water and a glass panel gaffer taped into the lid. It appears to be working fine with all the eggs showing activity
