Hi Rob, I'm not so sure you'll miss the water festival...
It was a few years since I was in Luang Purbang but they played Songkran there also.
Expect to be smeared with white paint and some kind of oily black substance which turned out to be soap proof.
It seemed a good idea to join in at the time until I showered and no matter how much I scrubbed the dam stuff just wouldn't come off!
PS. take the slow boat for sure, you'll understand why when you hear the longtails coming and see what fun the passengers are having all huddled together with their crash helmets on (that's if they're still running!)
oops sorry, posted twice!

I have noticed it a lot in my travels around thailand that many people put their bikes inside the house at night even if they have secure fencing with locked gates.
I've seen many houses with a little ramp as part of the steps and I imagine thats to make it easier to put the bike inside and out again.
Yes they do, even though the gates are locked those bikes are not that heavy and it doesn't take much to carry one over a gate and into a pick up.
Not a very good photo but if they can be lifted up here I suppose over a gate would be no problem!

Puzzling notice in (some) toilets
in Chiang Mai

The pipes which are used in Thailand have knuckle bends and are glued with no provision for access to clean the pipe.
In the west, UK at least, we use slower bends and access is provided with cleaning eyes in the even of a blockage.
So even though the Thai pipes used are actually stronger, they have a thicker wall, they can block up easier
