  1. I'm about to start building up the near katchet in October. Only know two builders so woundnt mind knowing a couple more to get quotes. One builder I know says he can build at half catalog price.

Would be good to get together

Us ban pheians. You'll find me in christys from Oct 20.

Ill be the drunk falang, narrows it down at bit.

  2. It's good to read this thread, as I was just about to start one myself. I live near Thonglor at notice the BIB doing their spot checks most days, certainly every weekend along Sukhumvit. I don't mind being fined if I have done wrong, well I do really, but I really object to topping up their salaries because I am a foreigner, though I do observe a lot of Thais being stopped as well. Slightly off topic, I am about to buy a car and I will need to drive down this section of road, what docs do I need to have with me to stay within the law? I know I must keep my cool and be polite, not use a mobile phone, and try to stay within the traffic laws - but anything else?
If you buy a used one get one with bk plates. Every time we go to bk with rayong plated car we get done. My driving is rubbish but no worse than Thais.
  3. I just bought a Honda airblade and I love it. Haven't seen it just recently as in Spain, probably has a som tom kitchen welded onto it by now. Payed 52K new from dealer opposite lam tong. Not as quick as hayate but I heard that hayate has theottel sticking open problem. No good for darling. Just noticed that predictive text on my blackberry comes up with farlung when I type darling

Probably a bit high tech for smilesville but it cruises ok at 90 kph and its comfy. .

  4. Can anyone tell me what I should be paying for rubber land out hat ban Yai way? Proper prices not falang prices.
If you post up a land map and location - I'll get you the real price. Cheers
Haven't got a map but east of rayong as far a klang. I've heard of Thais buying land very cheap but obvious I can't find any. The other factor is I don't know the criteria that governs prices. I asked my gf who's family farm rubber why we can't find any cheap stuff and she said no know Darling. I suspect that those selling know there's a falang in the mix somewhere. Mai pen rai.
  5. Hi Andy I hope you can help My brother wants to be able to build a bungelow on land owned by the mother of his thai girlfriend This will be unpaid work What visa does he need to get so that he can do this without getting into trouble and where does he get it from He already has a type o non immigrant visa Many thanks for any advice offered
If you look on the Visas forum you'll find links to info that tells all you need to know. But the bottom line is this: There are restrictions on foreigners doing most things that Thais can do (immigration has the whole list) and among the list is carpentry, bricklaying, labouring, etc. Which means you'll not get a work permit to do any of the jobs involved in house construction. The term 'work' in Thailand includes any activity apart from sleeping, so even if you're building a wall and not getting paid for it - you are classed as 'working' under Thai law. It's a shame really as this has prevented some voluntary workers doing a lot of potential good in Thailand. Having said that, I'm building a house on land belonging to my wife, and have done a bit myself (including the paperwork like design drawings, etc, but I'm not sure if this is classed as work as I could have done it outside Thailand). So far nobody has bothered me, but then our land really is in the country half-way up a mountain. So I suppose it depends where you are. But be warned there are very serious implications if you get caught. Unpaid work is still work in Thailand.
Perhaps I won't cut the lawn this afternoon!

  6. Hi All, This is my first post in this section. I've been reading previous Eastern Thailand Forum posts for quite a while now and haven't been able to adequately determine the answers to the following. 1) As a married (non-Thai wife) U.S. retiree, which locations along the coast between Sattahip and the Cambodian border should I consider the better choices for condo or home rental in conjunction with an active, retired lifestyle. That's "better" in terms of access to services, shopping, restaurants, communications (Internet), beaches, reasonably-priced housing and the potential for social interaction with "English-speaking" expats. 2) After extensive searches both within TV and via Google I find very few ads for condo/house rental services or listings, in general, for the areas mentioned in #1. I've found Rayongproperties dot com, but their inventory is pretty small and not far reaching. Are there any other sources that members living in the areas mentioned can provide as resources that can assist in the search? 3) My wife and I expect to come for another visit in a couple of months to investigate the area. What would you suggest as a good base of operations from which to conduct the search? For example, if we stayed in Ban Chang or Rayong could we easily do day trips via motor bike to the various towns. Or should we plan on staying somewhere halfway between Sattahip and Trat? 4) Lastly, which mid-range hotels would you recommend for a visit as described in #3? We're not back-packers, but are also not looking for upscale resort accommodations.

My wife and I have visited Thailand five times in the past six years and have stayed in Phuket, Chiang Mai, Bangkok and Pattaya during those visits. The Pattaya visit was a three-month trial run of sorts at a residence hotel. It provided a basis for determining that the coastal area identified in #1 is where we should focus our efforts and attention rather than up north or down south. We did day trips to the islands from Pattaya, but never spent much time in any of the coastal towns though. If any of the expat residents of any of the coastal towns would like to convey personal preferences, experiences, recommendations or other feedback via PM, please don't hesitate to do so. It's sometimes much more productive an approach than public postings since there are always a few lurkers who will take any opportunity to incite rather than enlighten. :o

I would recommend the tawan inn on soi tawan in ban phe. Food is good and only 10 min drive to rayong. Also plenty of falang expats including American to give you low down on area.
  7. Well, regardless, I'm not hearing anything that would convince me to move there.
Rayong is a very pretty province. I hang out in the country about 10 miles north of ban phe. Beautifull rolling country side, beaches with little beach bars, only 20 mins into town where everthing is on offer.I think one poster was being sarcastic in saying its rubbish here, its not. Yes rayong town is pretty ropey but only go there to go to tescos, land office, detist etc and it will be a lot more busy in next 5 yeara when all of this corporate money comes in.Personally I'm building like made!.
  8. ShugNorris, you've been fleeced already by my standards! She'll likely divorce you within the year. Who's gonna pay for the monthly payments on the car, and BTW, who's name is the car in.............. hello............. wake up and smell the somtum!
From an outside perspective it may look that way. Sin Sod is Thai Culture which I eventually came round to understanding (not entirely agreeing though) I'm 23 and just forked out £5000, seemed a bit ridiculous. Anyway, if I can get everything I need, a nice house (swimming pool :D), a decent car and a little bit of land in her name (leased by me for 90 yearsfor, err, one baht? Need to look into that bit) it'll be good. I have a limit whereby I'm not going to spend any more than I wouldn't be able to pay back to the bank in the UK for more than four years. I will still work in the UK and rent a flat there probably. I'm in the Military so I have lodgings there and can afford to pay a little more out of my salary because of this. Leave the Navy at 30 with Land and house and car etc all paid for and then can see what I want to do then. I've known her for two and a half years already, she's from Southern Thailand... She spent three months in shitty, cold and grey Scotland and is still happy enough. Her family actually seem Ok too, they took all the cheap corners for me in organising the wedding haha. Weddings on Friday and I'm the type of guy who looks forward to recieving the cards from the guests. :o Maybe get back 100 000 which'll mean I'll break even on the Sin Sod.. but will have still paid for the wedding if you know what I mean... Only time will tell... - Shug
You paid 100,000 bht for sin sod? What did the remaing 200,000 bht or so go for?
Shugs, the 90 year lease has no basis in Thai law, renewal of the 30 year lease is not automatic. You might get a shock although you can't be a lot older than her so maybe not? Where is the land? I think I know you.
  9. II have the same problem as many of you. How much?

My gf earns 4K a month and pays no rent or food or school fees, also I will be taking care of her child and she has been married before.. In laos where she's from it would be difficult for her to find a husband. So I'm thinking maybe 10K to take care of her and bills when she stops work, and family get the rest.

Does anyone know what school fees are for 8 year old?
