  1. OP sounds like a bit of a wrongun, if you ask me. Why would you "almost" deliberately make efforts to ensure some one you "loved" (could be wrong here, on both sides of the coin) would remain less educated ? Surely teaching any new skill would be the right thing to do ? My GFs daughter will be coming to live with us soon, and I will do my best (as will my GF) to help her speak English to the best of her ability. Why ? Because I hope that it will help her improve her life, and chances of getting a good job. I dont understand why some one would have the same view as what OP terms Thai Elite (I agree this happens BTW). A surf is always a surf ? Why does it have to be like that ? My step daughter wants (at this early stage) to be a doctor, and be dam_n sure I will do everything I can to help her achieve her goal. She may change and decide she wants to be a farmer, and I'll support her there too. (Would prefer her to be a doctor though obviously!)

Pompey I agree that in your world that doing the right thing by your GF's daughter is the good thing to do, however, a lot of what Marky says is correct for the 'bigger picture'. If Thailand wasn't the way that it is now then I very much doubt that I or many others would be living or working here and taking advantage of the way things are.

Now that Marky has explained the type of relationship he is in, it makes sense. I was single here once, and then obviously life was very different. They were good times, and probably the reason I have hung around here long enough to get a real relationship. The GF is expecting OUR first hence the step daughter moving in so we are one family. I love my life, however am also A LITTLE envious of Marky and the rest of the bachelor boys (or players) as it was good fun in my early days here. Huh, responsibilities eh ?

  2. This will make you laugh... Try the fish and chips in Samitivej Hospital. Very reasonable at 150 Baht a pop, freshly cooked and not to shabby at all!

Which Samitivej branch, Srinakarin or Sukhumvit?

Yes, someone told me the same thing about Samitivej Sukhumvit fish and chips. When I tried it was dry and basically awful. Perhaps it was just a bad day??

If it is anything to go by from Bangkok Hospital the Fish and Chips are disgusting. I belive there is a Hospital Food Supplier called Sodexo - avoid, avoid, reminds me of the <deleted> they used to serve back in UK hospitals.

I was talking about the Sukhumvit Branch. I've had them a couple of times since, and I think it depends on the chef as the fish can be a little dry. But Hey ! It's hospital food ! And for 150Baht still a reasonable lunch time meal. Fat Gutz is tasty, but three times the price.

  4. Air Lao. Bangkok to Vientiane return includes tax 10,488 baht.

    http://www.laoairlin...ight/result.php

Both Nok and Air Aisa are in between 3,000 and 4,000Baht to Udon Thani. But then add 200Baht for the bus to the Friendship Bridge, then haggle taxi dudes to get to Vientiane (about 250 Baht is a fair price). Then the same on the way back, but include 100 baht to get a taxi from the Friendship Bridge to the bus station which will take you back to Udon Thani airport.

Or catch a train for around 500Baht. It's not for me, but if budget is an issue that is the cheapest way.

  12. Has this scam arrived in Thailand now?

You pay for the training, you pay for the set up costs and materials and they will buy the completed product.

    Great.... except

Everything that you send to them is returned as substandard and even if you sent back one of their original samples it will still come back as substandard.

    No, they dont pay up

Right... game over then. Thanks very much for the heads-up.

  13. My G/F has seen an ad on TV (or somewhere) where she can make candles for a company from home and they will buy them back. As I understand its not going to enable me to retire, but it would certainly add to the income of the household. Does anyone else know of such a scheme ? There is a bit of money required up front for the two hours training, and then obviously a bit of money for stock.

Any info or thoughts on this would be appreciated, as "she who must be obeyed" wants to do this training next week.

    Cheers

A bit like mailing letters. Loadsajobs. Not that you ever get money for doing it.

So they dont pay up then ?

  15. Hi,

I have read some old threads on prices of PS3s in Bangkok. Can anyone give me a recent price and location to buy ? I've heard MBK is still the best and I could pay around 15,000. But is there anywhere that does bundles (two controllers, games etc) ? Also, are they backwards compatible with PS2 games ?

    Cheers.

  16. Two instances of JW "door knockers" back in the UK...

    1) Young man knocks the door whilst I was in the middle of a few beers. He was holding a book, which I assume to be a Bible. He asked me what I thought about all the trouble and war in the world. As I was a bit merry, and a bit bored I decided to not say "No thank-you" and have a chat with the guy. I told him that I thought the majority of wars, both current and past were caused by that Book or other books like that. He didnt have much to say and left quite soon after that.

    2) After a night out clubbing two older ladies knocked my door at around 10:30am. I answered the door in nothing but a pair of shorts (enough to scare anyone) They started their pitch, so I opened the door a little wider so they could see my two female friends (just friends I might add) snuggled close in bed behind me. I could see the look of horror on these poor old gals faces, and they quickly scuttled away. I am pretty sure they gathered that I am past saving. (If they could only see me now !)

They never returned to my house in the UK. A number of times I've seen them on Cowboy and I just have to think that they really are wasting their time and effort. Maybe I'm wrong.

  17. Samed Club Resort Hotel appears to be quite popular with various operators. Prices start from 59GBP per night. Pretty expensive if you ask me. Got a reasonable bungalow on Samui earlier this year for 1,200Baht per night. Looking for something similar. The missus will be gutted if I tell her it's down to Pattaya again !!!!!

  18. It's been suggested that I should just turn up somewhere and see what these places say. Due to the lack of visitors prices may be favourable. However this could also work against us and these establishments could see the farang rocking up with his TGF as an easy target to boost earnings.

I really need to learn the phrase "I am not a tourist"

    Thanks for your advice.

  19. I am looking for a half decent but reasonably cheap hotel/bungalow/whatever on Koh Samed for a short 4 night break either just before or just after Xmas. The various travel websites I have visited start at around 1,800Baht per night. Is there anyone that can recommend somewhere a little cheaper ? I guess I will be lucky to find the same 700baht per night deals that Pattaya can offer ?

Also when we arrive from the mainland, we can get almost anywhere from that pier right ?

    Any suggestions gratefully received.

    Cheers,

    Matt

  20. Last year I got a package from the UK containing what I knew to be Christmas prezzies from home. The X-Ray machine must have been on the blink that days, because all of my presents had been opened. I know, I know... it says on the customs label what is in the package, but I deliberatley did not read this to ensure my surprise on Xmas morning. Needless to say that was ruined when I opened that outer packaging to reveal screwed up wrapping paper and my open gifts. Thanks a bunch.
