  1. She's been given betahistine and cinnazrizine (Stugeron) and is taking them. The former worked a treat six months ago, almost instantly, but doesn't seem to be as effective this time. Think its the first time with the later. Noticed that CMU Hospital has an ENT department, I'll call and see what they can offer, as Sheryl said earlier, most deal in allergies etc., so will try and nail them down to specifics.

    Thanks for the advice folks.

  2. The wifes been diagnosed by a couple of GPs as having vertigo - and packed off with medication, but it doesn't seem to be resolving things. Getting beyond the normal GPs is getting frustrating.

Can anyone recommend a ENT (Ear, Nose & Throat) specialist in Chiang Mai, or other specialist, so we can begin trying to get to the bottom of this.

    Thanks for any suggestions.

  3. Friend of mine told me that at the prison out Mae Rim way the prisoners make gazebos, mostly from reclaimed (read stolen) teak, wood and bamboo etc., and sell them.

As I'm looking for one, just wanted to know if anyone knows anything about this: do they stil do it (as it was many years ago my mate came across this enterprise), if so whats the quality like, price etc.

    Cheers for any insightful info.

  4. Just my own odd take on reality, but I when geckos wander into my house, it's a welcome event. They'll eat the flies, ants, MOSQUITOES, and cucarachas. For the mammoth roaches you'd need a Tokay gecko, but for the smaller varieties your typical wall gecko will do. They will also take down fledgling centipedes, scorpions, and any other invertebrate they can chomp on.

Of course, geckos are not a practical solution to an existing problem. Just saying I wouldn't shoe them out of the house. They can find their own way out if they want, and if they stay, there might be a good reason.

But then again, I left a spider handing in the corner of my living room for 3 years because it's web kept filling with mosquitoes and other little pests. Oddly, nobody ever noticed the web except me. Periodically the spider would take it down and make a new one in the same spot.

Those big house spiders (about half as big as your hand and super fast), I found one in our kitchen a few months back happily munching on half a big roach. I no longer gently eject them from the house anymore, but don't tell the wife and kids!

  5. Accidentally shoved something into my stand-up fan shattering the plastic blades... everything else still works though.

Does anyone know where I can buy a replacement - just the plastic blades.

I presume they're pretty standard across brands.

    Cheers!

  6. A few weeks ago a gentleman posted pics of himself kayaking down the river ping. Looked great and with some people visiting I thought we'd give it a go.

Unfortunately the web links for the contact Lanna Kayaking didn't work - leaving us with well, no contact details.

Does anyone have any ideas. Could the River Ping Kayaker himself point us in the right direction?

    Any help would be grateful

  7. medical supply places on Suthep have loose menthol crystals for sale.

If you just want to inhale menthol then almost every pharmacy sells little nasal inhalers that use menthol along with other plant essences like eucalyptus, camphor, peppermint etc.

    Thanks CobraSnakeNecktie.

Menthol Crystals are the H-bomb of sinus and blocked nose relievers - nothing in my long sinus and blocked nosed history comes close: they clear your nose, head and anyone elses who happens to be in the house with you.

A few crystals (and I mean 2-3!) in a bowl with hot water and a towel - problem solved.

My Grandmother gave me a small jar of them over 15 year ago, and its only now I've run out. Probably why they aren't too easy to get hold of.

Anyway, thanks again for your help.

  8. Anyone know where I can buy menthol crystals (for blocked sinuses).

Local market pharmacy said the best place to try is Wararrot market, but where in Wararrot exactly?

    Any help more than welcome.

  9. Hello,

Got friends coming to visit soonish. Their budgets 1000B a night. Can anyone suggest any hotels, preferably in town? Basically whats the best hotel you can get for that money?

    Any help would be great!

  10. Just to let everyone know and warn the wives, family and friends...

Yesterday my wife received a call from a girl stating that she was from Sasakorn bank (the green one). She said that she had got outstanding credit to the tune of 39,000B, and missed payments on a credit card and asked her if she'd go down to the ATM to verify this (she also asked for her credit card number) and for her to call her once there. She claimed she had my wife's name, address and details in-front of her (without actually stating them). The wife immediately saw the scam (she doesn't bank with the greens) and refused to give any info. The girl went on to say that if she wouldn't verify this she'd have to pass it onto the thai equivalent of the fraud squad - and tried to frighten her with the severity of this. My wife said no problem and ended the call. A couple of minutes later a guy calls, supposedly from the 'special unit', sounding all serious and asking for her details, card number and pin extra. The wife again refused and the guy rang off.

Now, days before a customer of my wife told her the exact same thing - it had happened to her father. An old guy apparently who happens to bank with the greens and was all set to go down there, mobile in hand. Luckily she intercepted him. The grape vine says that apparently these types of scams are currently targeting Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Lampang.

Just something to pass on. The number they called from was a 0088 number.

  11. .... If customers leave no doubt the front-line staff will be the ones blamed - and sacked. ....

In your dreams baby, in your dreams.

Customers leaving = lost revenue = people laid off. LOS mate, these organisations margins are wafer thin, the slightest ripple and some young kids lost a job.

Its in your dreams mate, if you think some poor unfortunate at TOT won't get shafted over once the farang customers start leaving.

  12. Wow, just received a call back! That's a first for this thread! Sadly, customer services are non-the-wiser either - poor girl hasn't got a clue what I'm going on about. Tried to run me down the 'turn modem off' route again. Then told me to try 1100 again (told her they'd referred to CS). Having worked in call centers before I know how they feel and I feel sorry for them as they're obviously being kept in the dark about whats going on - and having to just deal with the resulting shit storm. If customers leave no doubt the front-line staff will be the ones blamed - and sacked. In my softest, politest voice I told her I was giving it a couple of days then canceling - she giggled - we said goodbye. Feel somewhat calm now.

  13. Never got my call back from TOT so called again.

Spoke to third person blah blah... "I'll pass it onto customer service."

So, I asked them to send this on (very politely) to customer services; "do you realize just how many customers you are pissing off (alternative phrase used here) and how many your going to lose if you don't stop messing about and sort something out?"

Suppose its good news for the non-torrent using TOT folk and the other providers.

I'm giving a couple of days monitoring and if nothing improves I'm off.

Given this, any suggestions on a different provider - has anyone experienced these type of problems with others? Neighbour has true and says its great. I'm in CM.

Problem is, contracts are signed for 12 months at a time. Just walking in to the office and trying to cancel might prove difficult. I've only recently signed for another 12 months :( Anyone got advice?

Contracts! This is the LOS, they're not worth the paper they are written on. Yeh, I think the contract says if you cancel you have to pay a fee (2000B or something). Happened to a friend they were messing about, he went to the office, canceled. They pointed out the fee, he pointed out that they'd been messing him around (plus he didn't have the money on him at the time) and walked out never to return. That was 12 months ago and no comeback. TOT seem free to mess around with services, plus the numerous times the net drops off etc etc. Sort of think they've already breached my contract in countless ways.

  15. Argh!!

England Int & CH4 News (UKNova) just kicked into life.

A random UK Nova - that's been blocked for two days - just kicked in and is seeding.

Others (inc UKNova ones) remain blocked.

What in the hel_l is going on - or are Tot playing at! Its 10 am and I'm getting a headache.

  16. Just phoned TOT again, clueless.

Asked if they were restricting/blocking certain traffic etc. They said they have to send the problem to the 'back office'.

I asked if they'd had many complaints about this? She said this is the first call!

I told them I'd cancel if its not sorted - I'm expecting a call back! I'm not holding my breath!

  17. This morning in CM:

All yesterdays (UKnova's & randoms) ones that weren't blocked - now blocked

Uknova England Int Highlights - blocked

    Thebox - blocked

A couple of randoms - ok.

Mate across the other side of CM (Hangdong) says everything's fine.

Think I've had it with TOT!

  18. Chiang Mai here, returned home this evening and the torrents I was seeding all blocked (Nova & Thebox).

Phoned TOT asked them if they were blocking and was given no reply. She instructed me to log on to my modem and changed the password???

Anyway been trialling stuff in Utorrent since:

    Uknova: fine normal.

    Thebox: blocked

    Extv: fine normal

Random others: a mix some getting blocked others not

I agree with others UK tv and sports are what keep me going.

Anyone have a clue what this will do for the new Premier Season i.e. streaming through p2p - noticed sopcast wasn't working during the World Cup?

Have you tried downloading a NEW torrent from Uknova, torrents already in your download list might still work? It's still blocked for me

All the trials are new ones.

Just tried Hollyoaks from thebox trackers as follows:

    DHT - not allowed

Local Peer Discovery - not allowed

    Peer exchange - not allowed

    http//thebox... - timed out

Don't really know what this means but me thinks its not good!

  21. Some time ago, around this time of the year, I used to venture down to the sports shop - at the junction approaching Warrarot market (next to the bakery).

Inside they'd have an array of last seasons football shirts on sale at the discount price of 90B! I'd stock up, favouring European club shirts and the odd international one. They were well made, with good quality stitched badges, trims etc. I've still got all the ones I ever bought from there and they're still fine. Anyway, a year ago I went there and they've stopped selling them. So, recently I went looking for some more. I've been in a few shops and whilst the prices are ok the quality of the shirts and badges aren't good.

Yes yes... (I can hear the clickerty clack of infuriated keyboards already) I do want my cake and to eat it - nice shirts, cheap price. Yes and I know you get what you pay for, but doesn't everyone like a bargain? By the way I'm not an avid enough fan of any single team to want to pay anymore than I have to.

So... does anyone know any shops of this ilk and where they are? Come on don't keep it a secret.

  22. Aikido's spot on.

Hate to burst your little fantasy bubble Thaigolfer, but (give or take a few) there's approximately 3,400,000,000 blokes in the world - Thais males (32,500,000) = 3,367,500,000. Yes, that many 'farang' blokes!

Its a pretty safe bet that amongst this lot your going to meet the good (gentlemen), the bad, and the ugly.

It was just bad luck that you bumped into to consecutive groups that were ugly.

I think I can match your daft comments with my own - I'm guessing that most Thai male golfers come from wealthy - monied - backgrounds, with the associated 'perks' this gives them in the LOS.

So... based on this I'll assume that the majority of Thai male golfers are arrogant, pompous and lacking in any sort of empathy for those beneath them.

But... knowing the Thai male population probably reaches into the millions, I'll reserve that judgment and instead assume that it too contains both the good, the bad, and the ugly.

Think... just a little bit, please.

  23. Thanks for the advice folks.

This is to do with something other than tax and money.

Regardless of whether I think I am or are not habitually resident (got a pretty good idea), I still need it legally verifying and a letter from that solicitor saying so.

I won't be going back to the UK any time soon, so are there any options on a lawyer doing it here?
