  1. Your wife can get her new chipped ID card at the Amphoe in Phayao, takes about 15 minutes. For the passport you will have to go to Chiang Mai but sometimes they have a mobile passport office in Chiang Rai etc.

Land ownership for her is not a problem and neither is dual citizenship. If traveling on both passports make sure you don't get mixed up if you went in on a Thai go out on a Thai, or visa versa, if you present your US first and you went in on a Thai you are instantly an illegal and can be arrested even as a Thai. This has happened a few times.

We haven't had a problem not showing both to the airline we always fly into Korea so maybe that's regional or country oriented. On arrival we normally get put into the Thai lineup even if we are traveling on a Canadian Passport for a short stay, no one in immigration seems to care at all.

  2. This means, that if we create the autorun.inf folder in the root of your flash device, no file with the same name can ever be created.

The problem with that option is a worm or Trojan can be created to modify the autorun.inf file thus allowing the unwanted action the next time it is installed in a port. You may however be able to password protect the autorun.inf file, depending on the operating system used, making it harder to overwrite and thus giving a bit more protection.

  3. "My plan is to build a house and maybe start a small pig farm"

Before you spend a lot of money you need to be aware that some jobs are not allowed under Thai law. I'm defiantly not an expert on this, so you would be well advised to seek competent legal advice.

There are 39 jobs that are not allowed under The Foreign Business Act and restricted occupations. Work in agriculture, animal breeding, forestry, fishery or general farm supervision is one of them. In any event as a foreigner you would need a work permit to do anything. Normally foreign people are turned into immigration by their Thai competitors, so be warned. Having said that in the end it's up to you, lots of people run businesses without work permits, I know a guy in Korat who runs a goat farm, but they do run the risk of problems. BTW, you are also too young to get a retirement visa, retired or not.

  4. I use Malwarebytes and it's registered plus Avast. I've also used AVG Free and Avira. Had good luck with all of them. I'm also giving Microsoft Windows One Care a go, it's online and also free also available in many languages including Thai. http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/center/howsafe.htm I've just changed to Win7 64 bit so some of the scanners are not all that compatible with Win7 or 64 bit, as they scan in 32 bit mode.

Also run Spybot Search and Destroy in Resident mode.

  5. Just to let you know the salary you are offering is as much or more than most RN's make in a government hospital. You would be better served to try and find some RN's that want to work some extra time. RN's in Thailand all have to take 2 years of English but some of them don't feel comfortable talking English a lot. My wife's friends, in Chiang Mai, often fill in at private hospitals as private nurses. Go to a government hospitals and ask around one of the ICU's is a good place to start as they are highly trained and often want extra work. Hope that helps you a bit.

  6. Forgot to mention that we also accept public service announcements, preferably with a phone number for a contact. We normally fit these in at the end of the weather or newscast. So let us know and we will fit them in as we can.

  7. Ricefield Radio and Lukamar same-same.

Our program schedule is on our Website.

Weather, Temp and Humidity are taken automatically from CNX in real time plus weekly forecasts twice an hour. News on the hour is from FSRNews (US) is either full 1/2 hour version (noon and 6pm) or headline news other times (repeats weekends) we are their only Asian station. At the moment we are playing a program on ASEAN free trade on the 1/2 hour in place of a Thai newscast. We syndicate democracy now at 11:00pm. We play a lot of Creative Commons licensed independents as well as we have just joined with Francphponie Diffusion, a division of the French government, which allows us to play the latest French releases royalty free. Late night we have no news etc just music weather and time announcements, if you are up in the middle of the night, most of our audience is from the EU or N America at that time.

You can also listen to Ricefield on the Chiang Rai Province website http://www.chiangraiprovince.com or on twitter http://twitter.com/ricefieldradio

  8. The simple answer is there is a lost and found at every airport on the planet. All you have to do is ask at one of the many information booths setup for such things.

And I feel abused no one sends me any unwanted PM's

  9. The real time weather program we use at the station is Weather Watcher live. Sits in your system tray or you can pop up a window. and gives you all the info you could ever want plus current, hourly, daily etc. We also have it linked in to our Radio automation software to give real time Temperature and humidity readouts during the hour. We also have weather 2 times an hour at 1/4 after and 1/4 to the hour on our radio stream.

  10. Sounds like your better off trying the Dusit first. probably get a better price . The Jetty is only a few minutes drive away anyway, you can probably see it from the Dusit.

Just a quick note. You can see where they park the boats from the Dusit pool area. Don't book a trip at or from the Dusit itself it will cost you a lot more.

  11. Some of the boats do not have life vests. In most parts of the river it is only about 4 feet deep unless there is a lot of runoff. We go to a spot where the guys keep their boats by the side of the river, just north of the Dusit hotel ( on Google it's 19.55.176N 99.49.524E ). You can negotiate a price from any of the guys there. Park in the Dusit parking lot and go across the little foot bridge to the west, walk up the river a bit and they are all there. Take the driver with you so he can negotiate prices for you.

Alternately you can park in the parking lot on the west side of the foot bridge as it's the Dust's staff accommodations, there is lots of room there, but maybe not as safe for the car although we never had a problem.

  12. Once again I sympathize with you Don. The restaurant/food-service business is the hardest on earth to get right. Just when you get where you are going, something changes and you get to start over. The most frustrating, and costly, thing I have ever done in my life was open my own restaurant and I should have known better after 25 years in a kitchen as an executive chef. Even more costly and frustrating than my brief foray into airline ownership..LOL

  13. I sympathize with Don. I spent 35 years in the hotel/tourist/foodservice industry, in Canada, and it's a hard way to make a living. When things work out well it's very rewarding but for the hours you put in the payout is lousy.

When we lived in Chiang Mai we never cooked a meal other than a MaMa snack. When in Phayao we never go out it's a mater of convenience and just relaxing at home.

About 5-6 years ago we wanted to start a boutique resort in Phayao to cater to higher end International tourists but once we really looked into it we decided that it was just too much of a gamble, too much red tape, not much qualified local labor and no support from the government. Just type Phayao in Google sometime you are lucky to find a map let alone accommodations.

While Chiang Rai has lots to offer, it's like Chiang Mai was 15 years . It's going to be some time, especially with the present Bangkok Southern leaning political climate, before the North is developed. There are lots of things that could be done but won't be as the political shift is back to Bangkok the center of the Elitist universe.

  14. There is a terrible misconception that a Thailand degree is not valid in the US. The US Department of Education position of recognition is shown below.

I personally have hired a number of persons with foreign degrees. In my last position, with USAID, over 75% of our staff had foreign degrees.

Sorry this is off topic but I thought it should be said.

Don, you do bring up a good point. My feeling is that professional qualifications from abroad are scrutinized at a much higher standard in Canada than the US. In my wife's case, she could have taken courses at a Canadian university but it would have meant a further 3-4 years of study and then she still would have had to sit the Canadian board examinations etc. I'm saying this because one of her colleagues went to LA at the same time and was practicing in a couple of months. Possibly this is because of the differing medical systems of the two countries. It is an ongoing problem in a lot of professions, in Canada anyway, as many well trained professionals cannot work in their chosen field because of the qualification issue.

My feeling is you had better check if the Thai University qualifications are accepted at least in the country you plan to live in.

  15. Just a quick note on the tail end of this conversation. My wife graduated from the Faculty of Medicine, at CMU. First rate program, in my opinion, but when we moved to Canada they wouldn't accept her qualifications.

If you are going to live and work in Thailand then probably a Thai Uni is fine but if you are going to end up working in N. America, the UK or the EU then you will find yourself at a distinct disadvantage and possibly other choices should be made. IMHO.

  16. Not at the moment we are in Canada, we have a house there, until after the Olympics but we have a house also just out of Phayao. On 1202 just opposite the Army Camp on the road to the temple. We will be back in late February or Early March.

  17. The task of 'Francophonie Diffusion' in Paris is to promote among others the international broadcasting of Francophone music. The funny thing is that the radio station of one of our members here in Chiang Rai officially is allowed by this organisation to download and play all the latest French releases. It's our own good old ricefieldradio that will be playing approx 30% French based music from now on.

Maybe some of the French expats in Chiang Rai or elsewhere might be interested.

Thanks for the plug Limbo.. :) Tonight we finished incorporating the French music into our programing. New releases come out every few weeks and we will add the songs we think our listeners will enjoy. Along with French Music we also play the best of Creative Commons from countries like the UK, Canada, USA, Spain Brazil, Germany and the Caribbean, all in their native languages.

  18. With 2 large ad banners at the top of the page, then the 10 SEPARATELY pinned topics, it's necessary to scroll almost half way down the screen before being able to see any of the active topics. Is it possible to get those pinned topics included under 1 or 2 "resource" topics?

I was treating this like a joke but the the 2 banner ads are in one row making in essence a single one ans there are only 8 pinned topics. To tell you the truth I've never once found any of this a problem, now I do find the inserted Google adverts a bit annoying but I do the same on my websites, after all someone has to pay for bandwidth. :)
