  1. It warned people to keep off unstable huge billboards and other structures as they might be be brought down by strong winds during the period.

There they go again...spoiling all the fun...

Me and the Mrs. were just about to go out and find a billboard to perch on, and throw water at unsuspecting motorists and pedestrians.

Maxjay ... you really must learn to read the OP's carefully. It is only unstable HUGE billboards that you are advised to stay off. Unstable large billboards will be fine to perch on, and even unstable very large billboards will probably be OK. It's just the huge ones you need to avoid.

  2. why is this news?

thailand is a tropical country, tropical rain storms like this happen with great regularity. in fact there was a bigger storm only last week...

nice to feel human for a few hours until the heat and humidity build up again.

Agreed ... since Thailand is in the tropics, is not any storm, by definition, a "tropical storm". You rarely see headlines in the UK "temperate storm brings rain".

  3. Seems likely that the temple/abbot is involved in sales of tiger parts to China, which is despicable. But it raises an ethical issue of how to deal with it. If the tigers were taken away and put into some (genuine) sanctuary where they were protected from being slaughtered and sold to China, it would probably result in the extirpation of the few remaining wild tigers in Thailand, because the demand would remain but the supply from the "Tiger Temple" cut off, meaning the only remaining source would be wild tigers.

exalll, sadly I think the Temple if it is exploiting these animals is not preventing the slaughter of wild Tigers. It is just another source.

Agreed - I am sure wild tigers are still poached for their parts, but the poaching pressure would increase enormously if the "tame" supply were cut off.

  5. I wouldn't be surprised if this couple constantly jabbers about Thainess and high moral standards at dinner parties of the HiSo circles. They should be sentenced to pay the maid tenfold and do 12 hrs community work a day in a home for disabled for two years to pay back for their shameful behavior.

You've lost me here. Why would this couple constantly jabber about Thainess? Because they are senior UN officials? Or because they are in Thailand? If the latter, can we assume that all foreign nationals resident in Thailand constantly jabber about Thainess? I don't think I do!

Why would this couple constantly jabber about Thainess?

Sorry to bother you with my personal experience with so called Hi-So folks in Thailand constantly talking about Thainess and high moral standards. Do you need names?

Your personal experience with Hi-Sos of all nationalities? I'm impressed by the breadth of your experience.

  7. Experts say the impeachment and criminal charges are the latest attempt by the country's royalist elite, and its army backers, to extinguish the political influence of the Shinawatras, whose parties have won every election since 2001.

Says it all, its the only way the yellows can get back in power by hunting down all those that WILL BEAT them again in a fair election they cant win so they get the military to take over and start their witch hunt

Its a joke that Prayut is saying they are trying to reconcile the country cheesy.gif and the opposition is silenced and is not allowed to have a voice against what is going on

    COMPLETE JOKE

The Shinawatras have never won a fair election. Yes, they have won every election since 2001, but all of those have been heavily flawed, non-democratic elections. In a FAIR election - in which there is no coercion and in which voters are educated on the issues, the result is unknown.

I was reading an article in the International Herald Tribune last week. In the very first sentence the correspondent talked about Y being elected in a "democratic election". Lost all credibility right there!

  8. I'll give any odds you want that the place will not be even partially demolished within 60 days.

    T.I.T.

Indeed it is now more than 70 days later, and no demolition is occurring.

At this point, in most western countries, the company would be facing fines of many tens of thousands of dollars each week, with the weekly amount rising rapidly, until demolition actually starts. Wonder what is happening here in Thailand?

  9. I'm sorry, but as a resident of soi Ruamrudee (not elderly or Thai, no car and so reliant on walking or motorcycle taxis) it is not feasible to widen the road. It would mean eating away at an already very narrow pavement ("sidewalk" for Americans) by half a meter for about 800m.

Nor is it possible to build a new road access, as proposed by one poster - behind this building is Ruamrudee soi 2, and beyond that the expressway.

  10. It said midnight on 14th until 2am on 15th (26 hours) if using an ATM of a different kind to that of your card.

Where did it mention the times for ALL ATMs? May have missed it.

Here on planet earth in the Kingdom of Thailand there will be a nation wide shut down of ATMs for a period of two hours from midnight on 14th Friday to 2am on 15th Saturday = 2 hours.

Are you on another time system?

Kev is correct. I am sure they meant to say midnight on the 15th until 02:00 on the 15th.

  11. .

Tip of the day. Taxis by law if flagged down and refuse to take you then just leave the back door open and walk away. Childish I know but hysterical particularly if it's raining and the driver has to get out of the cab to close the door.

Taxi driver tip of the day. For farangs, lock all doors and only roll the window down 1 inch to listen. If the destination is too far because you must return the taxi to the depot in 1 hour, roll up window and go. Childish I know but only fair when they have a farang style temper tantrum because there are no more taxis for at least 50 feet away.

    enuff said

    ~

    Childish, yes. Illegal, yes.

Taxis in other major cities manage to deal with shift changes quite simply and without either stressing potential passengers or allowing drivers to get away with using it as a feeble excuse (I have heard the excuse used virtually every hour of day and night). In Singapore, for example, they put signs in the windscreen indicating where they are having to go to complete their shift - if a potential passenger is going in that direction, they can flag down the cab, if not, they know not to bother. In NYC the drivers will turn off their "For Hire" sign, but will (sometimes) stop to see if a potential passenger is heading the same way.

Not difficult if there is a desire to sort it out.

20 years ago I did this on a regular basis, until I saw a farang chased and badly beaten by the driver when others chipped in. Older and rather wiser, I open the front door and ask, expecting to be refused, happy when I'm not.

In Hanoi years ago, an acquaintance had and argument with a Siclor drover over the equivalent of 50 cents, again, beaten up. He complained of back pain for a week, then disappeared. I saw him again a month later looking like hell. He'd been casevaced to Singapore, emergency surgery, ruptured spleen, all over 50 cents?! It simply isn't worth it.

    That said, one man's meat.....

However, I have never been refused by a Hanoi taxi

  13. I come late to this thread ... 17 pages in, so I apologize for probably making the same point that others have made. But according to the police theory, the sequence of events was:

    1. They killed David

    2. They raped Hannah, while pausing for a smoke

    3. They killed Hannah

So during the killing of David and during the rapes, Hannah was silent? As I understand it, nowhere is very far from anywhere on Koh Tao, but (as far as I have read) there have been no witnesses who reported hearing screams.

    Seems dubious to me!

  14. I have to say that the three yellow-shirted (presumably football players) who start following Hannah in the CCTV footage certainly looked to me like they had something on their minds. Problem is ... its not clear to me when the CCTV footage was shot - could have been much earlier than the murders, so whatever was in their minds had long since passed; and we obviously don't know what exactly they had in mind - could have been something "relatively" harmless like peeking up her skirt, chatting her up, or whatever.

I haven't seen that footage. Do you have a link to it?

Hmm ... so many different threads on these murders ... I've lost track which one it was on. But there are several CCTV sequences looking down on a street food vendor and David, Hannah, their friends, and numerous other people go by ...

Well ... here's a link ... but the version I saw before was much clearer and the scene with the football players seemed to run on another couple of seconds

  17. Further down the other report is saying in the 2030s the sea level in Chanthaburi is expected to rise 0.19mm a year though which is a whole order of magnitude smaller - either the usual sloppy reporting or they haven't got a clue what is going to happen.

100% sloppy reporting. 0.19mm = 2/10 of a millimeter. If they had an editor that knew the first thing about decimal places, it would have been corrected. At that rate, sea level will rise 19 millimeters per century. Every computer model concocted by government funded lackeys scientists has proven to not work in the real world. Antarctic ice is largest ever recorded and the Arctic ice is returning with a vengeance. Only through manipulation of selected data can anyone still make a case for the connection of carbon dioxide and Global Warming that has stopped warming 17 - 21 years ago and they cannot explain that. 'If you can't dazzle them with your brilliance, baffle them with your bullshit', is what's happening here with this article and others like it. They depend on their authority to convince you or scare you into believing.

So much nonsense in one post - amazing!

Antarctic ice mass continues to decrease

Ice extent in the Arctic continues to be far below average, and is certainly not "returning with a vengeance"

    The 10 warmest years on record are, in order ... 2010, 2005, 1998, 2013, 2003, 2002, 2006 2009, 2007, 2004 - yet you claim that global warming stopped in 1997, or possibly 1993.

Scientist confesses he made up polar bear population estimates

My, my. All you have to do is type it into the Internet and it becomes fact for you. Why is it all you Global Warming Kool Aid drinkers don't need any facts; at least facts that can stand the test of time? You've been lied to and now you are so committed to your belief that you can't stand to admit that you were fooled.

Ha ha! ... "My, my. All you have to do is type it into the Internet and it becomes fact for you" Pot ... kettle ... black? Or are you suggesting that it is your own independent research that has led you to know what virtually every reputable climate scientist disagrees with?

  18. "Mather pointed out that the sea level in Trat and Chanthaburi provinces had risen by 4-5 millimetres per year, against the mean global level change of 3mm."

Hysterical, but dutifully reported for the ignorant.

Koh Tao: police fail another day

    The Nation

Meanwhile, Pol Maj Gen Kittipong Kaosam-ang, a Surat Thani police commander, asked the media not to report in-depth investigation results, saying it may give some clues to the culprits. But he revealed that Thais may have been involved in the murders and had tried to destroy evidence linking them to the attacks. Some people on Koh Tao had given false information to police in a bid to divert attention.

    -- The Nation 2014-09-23

Amazing! The police asking the media not to report in-depth investigation results. Where does the media get in-depth investigation results?

Seems to be a fundamental misunderstanding by the police of what the media does! "We are going to give you all the information we have, but please don't report it"!!!
