  1. Heard a story before about similar things happening to an asian tourist (a singaporean if I recall correctly) who alledgedly had an extra carton of cigarettes put in his/her shopping bag and assumed it was a gift or a promotion. Result: stamped out of Thailand with "Thief" in the passport.

Has anyone ever actually seen a passport with 'Thief' stamped in it? I've read this before and find it hard to believe.

I used to work in aviation. I must say I have never seen a passport inscribed with any such comment.

Any passport belongs to the issuing country, and only they can officialy add an endorsement.

However, in the past I have seen old style passports with comments added by customs authorities, regarding smuggling irregularities.

With the new style passports, all such information is held on computors.

I have to disagree as I have seen the Thai immigration write in passports that the holder is a convicted criminal, the charge and the punishment, plus whether the holder is banned from reentering Thailand or not. The Thai immigration do as they please, so you are completely wrong.

Anyone who has been found guilty of a crime by a Thai court and is then subject to deportation has the reason stamped in his/her passport. The stamp will say what law was broken, and it will also state the punishment(jail time, fine etc.). Then on the same page in Thai it will state if the person has also been blacked listed or not and the length of that black listing. This is done by the immigration.

I know for a fact that this is done, as I have seen the stamps quite a few times. Find an overstayer and you will see that their passport will be stamped saying that they overstayed and the punishment as well. A person who has done a more serious crime will have the story in their passport and will be blacklisted for life.

  3. Calling the embassy is a complete waste of time as they will do nothing to help and the tourist police know this very well. In fact the tourist police will normally inform one's embassy about your case but they will be talking to a Thai assistant who will have absolutely no sympathy for your plight and therefore will do nothing. The Thais believe what they are told by the police, especially when foreigners are involved.

As for the foreigners who "work" for the tourist police, be very careful of them, quite a few are as crooked as their new Thai police friends.

  4. You might be suprised.

dam_n right you will be surprised, the cops will tell the motorbike crew that you have made a complaint, then you can certainly expect some retaliation from them. Expect something very nasty to happen.

  5. A while back a company in the US sent a small item, costing around B300, but the post office people wanted me to pay B1,200 in tax, I told them to keep it and just got a refund from the company.

I have found that it is very, very unwise to have things sent to Thailand through couriers like TNT, DSL, FED EX. as every parcel ends up with a huge tax bill.

  6. I once saw a Thai couple in Lotus digest at least 1/2 kg of very expensive grapes and they didn't even buy any. All evidence would have been ingested by the time they got to checkout, so no giveaway packaging!

Thais steal regularly, it is a job for them, they make lots of money doing it. They steal anything that is not bolted down, a few months ago you may remember they tried to steal an atm machine. I have been in many stores and seen Thais taking stuff, but not my business to interfere. This is Thailand, so let the Thais deal with their own people.

  7. Trawling around the international press there have been several instances of tourists having similar problems in this bar. There are many conflicting elements to this story but my gut feeling is that something is going on in this bar which is not good.

You are right, the owner is not a very nice sort of person and he has trained his staff to be like Rottweilers. He will try and get money out of a customer "any" way that he can.

Remember everyone, he called the police in the first place. He never withdrew the charges.

Why would the police approach the woman and ask her to open her bag? Because the owner made a report that is why!

  8. I find it very hard to believe that a farang bar owner could be dishonest or corrupt. These guys are the cream of the expat crop.

It seems that you don't leave your room, some farang bar owners are positively evil, some resort to violence in order to extort money, while some jack up the bill a few hundred % and some try to scam by saying that you stole something or broke something.

    Cream? More like crap!

  9. So nobody will explain to me the missing link is this story. Someone else confesses, she is not the actual perpetrator and everyone knows it, but still she is seen as doing something wrong, even as if she did in fact commit some crime. Anyone? I'd greatly appreciate it.

She took the rap for someone else's prank, the other girl confessed but the cops told her to buzz off, owner wouldn't drop the case so the police had to continue with it. Australia makes a fuss, Thai government hear and tell everyone in Phuket to sort it out asap. The owner of bar still won't stop pressing charges so she has to go to court.

In this country, if you don't plead guilty then the case never finishes, so she was told to plead guilty which she did, as she had no other choice.

But as she said that she was guilty to the charge then she will now be black listed and banned from re entering Thailand, usually it is forever.

The blame for this farce lies solely with the Australian bar owner, he only needed to ask her for the beer mat back, so simple. Why involve the cops? Unless he was trying to scam these girls and that is what it seems to look like but his plans backfired. The guy needs to be kicked and thrown out of Thailand.

  10. Thanks for the replies, I had an HP printer before but it kind of fell apart and I think it would cost far too much to repair it.

But I do like Canon, so have to figure out which is the right one. I will buy it from a reputable shop so that they guarantee to fix it if it goes wrong.

  11. So it seems it really was ALL about his skin colour.

But he didn't, and even if so,what does her size and sex have to do with it? She's an officer in the Royal Thai military/police, she shouldn't need protecting from words

    .

Ofcourse skin-color plays a part. It always does.

Talk privately to Thais and they will admit that they do not like black skinned people, and especially black skinned foreigners.

  12. I suspect you want a color laser printer, which don't do too well for photos but are fine for documents. For 4k do not believe you will find any.

Your price range seems to be the ink jet type - and they all print good photos but document printing will be more expensive (especially if you use good ink).

Unfortunately, laser printers are out of my price range. I am not worried about the cost of ink etc as I will only be using the inkjet now and again, just to print a very small amount of documents, no more than say 10 pages a month.

  13. I am having a problem finding an inkjet colour printer that is only designed to print colour documents. Everywhere I look the printers are designed for printing photos and I don't want this type of printer.

I have checked various sites on the internet but their information is very misleading, I have been to the shops but the assistants are only interested in getting you to buy, none of them have a clue what the printer actually does.

I was looking for a printer that costs no more than about B4,000 and I don't want want of those all in one jobs either.

Can anyone help me find a printer that just prints colour documents.
