  1. I could be wrong on this, but I read somewhere that even the current Foreign Minister cannot speak English!

I'm afraid you are wrong on this, though the rest of your post was very interesting.

Dr Surapong has a masters and a doctorate from the United States and has taught at university level in the US. (Doesn't mean he's the right man for the job, of course.)

I think the previous Democrat Education Minister and the Deputy Minister of Education did not speak English. I heard both of them make a terrible mess of speeches written for them in English at a World Teachers' Day forum before an international gathering. On another occasion, at an English-medium (World Bank) seminar I attended the minister gave the introductory speech entirely in Thai. This is the same minister who said English could not be an official language for teaching purposes here because other countries would think Thailand had been colonized!

Thanks for the correction. As I said, I wasn't sure, as the article was some months back, so memory may have failed me a bit.

(Doesn't mean he's the right man for the job, of course.) Now, Thailand actually does have "the right man for the job" in many cases. Unfortunately, the "right man" is usually ignored and the position given to someone from the family, or a political crony, who knows nothing about the job.

I remember the comment the Minister made about how English could not be an official language as other countries would think Thailand had been colonized. That one had me laughing for a very long time. Made me wonder if anyone had ever pointed out to him that both Hong King and Singapore were once colonies, but look at how far ahead of Thailand they are in just about every area?

Your comparisons are based on pointless assumptions. Let's try listing the countries that had been or have been colonised and you soon discover how detrimental it has been to them. Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar,Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iraq, all of Africa, Central and South America but to name a few. Did the people of HK have any rights? No! Do they now? Very few! Did Singapore? No! Does Singapore now, it's improving, but you still wouldn't want to live there.

The importance of English is declining as world language. It used to be French until they became overly self-indulgent, English is not far behind. If a country wants to be at the fore front of a modern advancing world, they would be better advised to instruct Chinese or Indian. These so called advanced western industrialised countries are swiftly becoming nobodies as they spend the next few centuries paying off debt due to greed and the costs of sustaining imperialism.

It's a myth that Thailand has not been colonised, they tend to overlook the Burmese, Chinese who own and run the country, Japanese and now the Americans. It helps if you understand a little more than 60 years of Thai history. There is another 7 centuries before the devastating effect of allowing the USA to colonise Thailand during the Vietnam massacre and US advancement of imperialism into South East Asia.

To this day American's are amazed that the Japanese attacked. Brainless fools. Might have something to do with the invasion of Japan by the USA in the 19th century solely for the purpose of gaining access to goods that they had squandered, whale oil for their industrialized growth. They had already killed off their own supplies. Ring any bells? Texas dry, let's meddle in the Middle East then. Prior to the US invasion, Japan was a peaceful insular country. Before the American invasion of Thailand, Pattaya was not the world's largest brothel. Am convinced syphilis has made Americans brain dead.

What the Thais learnt from these imperialist was that they were and still are an easy touch. Thailand made billions and continues to do so, yet the imperialists still believe they are a superior civilisation. The communists control their people for the greater good of all, while the Americans control their citizens for the greater good of a few. Walk outside of the tourist spots of the USA and you soon realise what a disgraceful state that country actually is in and has been for decades. All in the name of GOD.

It is estimated that under Stalin 20,000,000 people were murdered, under Mao Tse-Tung 40 and 70,000,000 people died...They never even created a successful socialist state, so as for communism...forget about it!

Although there are some exceptions, most countries have organically moved towards democracy, including many previously socialist countries. This would indicate that people prefer democracy i.e. the empowerment of the individual.

You certainly have the right to question the delusional 'democracy' we have under 'leaders' like Bush, Reagan etc., but even these idiots pale in comparison to the socialist dictators of Stalin, Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Jong-Il, Mobutu, Kabila, Sekou Toure, Gaddafi etc. And lets not forget Hitler and his National Socialists...In the immortal words of George Orwell "Absolute power corrupts absolutely."

PS Japan had been at war with China well before any debacle between Japan and America: The first Sino Japanese War started in 1894 over Korea. As far as I know Japan signed trading treaties with US and most western colonizers as far back as 1850 but this involved no "invasion for whale oil"

  2. A good start would be to raise the salaries offered. I've passed on every position advertised down there because they want to pay "backpacker" salaries. Also, adding insurance and housing allowances would help.

There you have it...All they have to do is 'UP' the salary.

I was asked to teach at a Thai school, full-time for a salary of 10,000 Baht...this was after I showed them proof of degree, CELTA and 3 and a half years business teaching experience in Bangkok.

To drag Thailand successfully into the modern age will require government funding, which can only come from taxation, and they are simply not prepared to tax those who can make a difference.

Beyond that what is there to discuss?!

  3. The collective subconscious of this thread is most palpable...but paying for bar girls with fake notes is not a good idea: They still cash them in. If they're not stunners it will be tested in the first taxi they get into outside of your place because her purse is empty. Even if she is top shelf totty she will still go into the first 7-11 for some spicy piss-flavored shredded cardboard and come up against the dreaded blue light.

I suppose if you were on the move...i.e. you left the hotel at the same time...hmm

  4. Thai men should learn to treat us with more respect. Else ... you know what may happen.

Thai Men are Thai Men... Why do you suppose Thai women seek out Foreigners..?? Not just because they think they are rich.

Forty plus years ago, young, very poor, Americans were running all over this country - a couple of million in just a few years - many took wives home with them. As they are now reaching retirement age, they are returning. To places like Nakhon Pathom (NKP), Ubon, Korat, Takhli, Udon or Sattaheep, not to the flooded trash heap called Bangkok...

The two comments above are not the stupidest remarks to come out this past hundred years: narrowly pipped at the post by Chamberlin's "Peace for our time..." and coming just after Bush' "I have opinions of my own --strong opinions-- but I don't always agree with them."

You do realise that in effect you're saying it's OK for women to cut a dude's penis off for either suspecting or knowing he was unfaithful...so its OK for a guy to reciprocate if he suspects her of being unfaithful, is it?! Are you freakin insane!

What about getting a divorce or just leaving them....that would probably do the trick wouldn't it, you twoz are insane in the membrane!

  5. Thai doctors are world-renowned for the expertise in reattaching severed penises.

Maybe TAT should get involved to promote yet another Thai cultural phenomena ?

Yes they could start a subdivision of the T.A.T - Thai Women (for the) Amputation (of) Testicles Society....Haven't got a clue as to how to abbreviate that though! :ermm:

  6. If you have a two entry tourist visa both can be extended but you have to make second entry before the expiration date on the visa itself.

Hi Lopburi, sorry to pester you with questions but you seem quite knowledegable on the subject...Do you know if it's possible to have consecutive double entry toursist visa from Laos?

I'm coming to the last month (last 30 day extension) of my previous double entry toursit visa and I need to stay on longer...is it possible that the Thai consulate in Laos will grant me a second multiple entry tourist visa?

Do they apply the same thinking to this visa as they do to any other tourist visa i.e. you have to leave the country for a month (s)?

    Thanks for your time!

  7. Very useful thread...all the 'constructive' postings are really appreciated...thank you!

I have some questions on the subject of getting a multiple entry visa O...regarding the required paperwork by the KL Thai consulate.

My situation is slightly difficult in the fact that I had a child with a Thai woman...but we were never married choosing to 'live in sin!'

We have since split up...for the past 3 years she has lived abroad with her husband. Myself and my 7 year old son live in Thailand...he has my family name on his birth certificate.

Up to the present I've always had work permits but like so many at the moment jobs are scarce, so I have to find other means of staying here.

The multiple Non O sounds like a god solution...but seeing as I'm not married (and have never been!) my predicament with getting a Multiple Entry Non O will require other papers to be presented to the KL consulate...Can anyone help me and give me a summary of 'exactly' what I will need to show them...please be specific as I can't afford to go to KL and find I don't have the correct papers.

Thank you in advance for all your help and advice!

You can apply for extension of stay as parent.

    From Police order 777/2551

2.18 In the case of a family member of a Thai(applicable only to parents, spouse, child, adopted child or child of his/her spouse):

Permission will be granted for a period of not more than 1 year at a time.

    (1) The alien has obtained a temporary visa (NON-IM)

    (2) Proof of family relationship

    (3) In the case of a spouse, the marital relationship shall be dejure (legitimate) and de facto;

    (4) In the case of a child, adopted child or child of his/her spouse, the said person must not be married, must be living with the family, and must be less than 20 years of age; or

    (5) In the case of a parent, one of parents must have an average annual income of not less than 40,000 baht per month or a money deposit of not less than 400,000 baht for expenses within a year.

    (6) In case of marriage with a Thai lady, the husband who is an alien must have an average annual income of not less than 40,000 baht per month or a money deposit in a local Thai bank of not less than 400,000 baht for the past 2 months for expenses within a year.

Note: Two months first extension after that 3 months

Thank you for your reply...What papers will I need as proof of my parental status for the Multi Non O aside from the Birth Certificate? According to the other posts the 400K in the account isn't important but in my case the job is, right? I already have a work permit which finishes at the end of this year but will not be renewed due to close of contract (I obviously won't tell them that!)...hence the need for the multiple Non O. So my question is what is the complete gamut of paperwork that I will need to take as an expat one parent child living in Thaialnd to the KL embassy?

  9. Oh my! We are literally swimming here…When I say we: I’m speaking of course for all my fellow, south coast exports. Actually, our situation is so waterlogged that it has led to one of the most bizarre problems I have ever encountered in my life: the occurrence of man-eating sharks in our soi!

I’m sure there are other Thai Visa readers currently reading this post who are only too familiar with this extreme turn in events…To them; I can only say as a debutant in this area, your shared experiences in dealing with the unwanted presence of voracious predators in residential areas are invaluable!

Further to that note, I feel that it might be a good idea to keep this thread in permanence, updating it regularly with cunning shark-savy survival tactics such as avoiding prolonged eye contact, not turning one’s back, resisting the temptation to buy sweet or savory snacks from perambulating vehicles whose path has encroached on regular feeding grounds etc.

  10. "To me it is 10 times worse when a woman victimises another woman in this way instead of a man doing it. "

    TheLaughingMan...

what? 10 time worse for a woman to commit this crime than it is for a man?

    You have to be kidding.

How about the fact that these types of crimes are committed by men well over 10 times more often than the same crime committed by women.

Why is it that men find women committing crimes so much more offensive than if one of their 'brothers' do?

A man beats his wife to death, and that's "domestic violence", a woman retaliates against her abuser, and she's a murderer....

    please.

    Please...please, what?

He (thelaughingman) may have worded his sentence somewhat strangely...but I think I understand that he finds it abhorrent on the part of other women to pray on other women: perhaps he meant...and I say 'PERHAPS'...he meant that in a society where women appear (to naive occidental eyes in any case) to be second class citizens, their fellow women should know better and stick together. I may be wrong, but I wouldn't like to jump to conclusions...as that would make me look like a COMPLETE TOOL WOULDN'T IT?!

However, in your case, there seem to be less room for interpretation...

    1) "...the fact that these types of crimes are committed by men well over 10 times more often than the same crime committed by women." Your "FACT" has paperwork and source material I presume, perhaps you'd like to share with us "MEN."

    2) "...Why is it that men find women committing crimes so much more offensive than if one of their 'brothers' do?" Men? Which men are you talking about? The collective noun that refers to all men? Meaning you know this to be true of all men? 'Brothers'…meaning that all men are unified in that same belief? Is that what you see on this thread...?

    3) "...A man beats his wife to death, and that's "domestic violence", a woman retaliates against her abuser, and she's a murderer...." What is the connection between thelaughingman's phrase and your example? Are you saying that women don't get fair treatment in the eyes of the law? What particular instances are you talking about…I presume this is a court case of which you have record? Please provide proof.

For myself I can say this: I have had my 7 year old child taken away from me by his Thai mother, who after we separated found another guy in another country. She has every right to a new life ans also according to Thai law to do what she wants with our child...Even though I have stayed in this country all the time to be here for my child even though she never actually took care of him, instead palming him off on her aunties who did everything while she went out on the piss with her friends. Even if I wanted I couldn't get a different result...why? Because Thailand has no paternity laws. I could pursue the case in the country where she has settled if I had any money left...but I really don't want my child to have to be torn apart any further, so I submit to her wishes…wishes that are legal in the eyes of the law yet so obviously unjust to me as a "FATHER" and my boy as a soon to be...."MAN." You talk about 'MEN' and the "LAW"...I question your authority in both areas.

Men are no more treated fairly by the law, society, than by their fellow women!

Do the world a favor…educate yourself into being a more tolerant, kind and compassionate human being…PLEASE!

  11. 1) Who says drugs are worse than alcohol, cigarettes, driving a motorcycle under the influence, contributing to the world of pirating, pornography, prostitution, the sell of prescription drugs over the counter ...Who is in a position to judge....Have you never done anything illegal?

    2) It is illegal to drink and smoke in Thailand in public places...consult your local policeman.

    3) Som Nom Na is not an answer..it's illegal in Thailand..as you obviously put your life in danger.

    4) Prostitution is illegal so is pirating in Thailand...again consult your local policeman.

    1) Who says drugs are worse than alcohol, cigarettes, driving a motorcycle under the influence, contributing to the world of pirating, pornography, prostitution, the sell of prescription drugs over the counter ...Who is in a position to judge....Have you never done anything illegal? i used to do all kinds of drugs and illegal shit in MY country , since i live in Thailand i behave because i know the risks , like everyone does , and i don't drive drunk , and i wear helmets when on a motorbike , i don't hire hookers anyway

    2) It is illegal to drink and smoke in Thailand in public places...consult your local policeman. it is NOT illegal to drink in the street ( but i do not drink in the street anyway) and smoking is prohibited in restaurants , air cond locations, bars and bus stops , NOT in "public places".

    3) Som Nom Na is not an answer..it's illegal in Thailand..as you obviously put your life in danger. yes SOMNOMNA is MY answer to people who put their freedom at stakes while they know the risks

    4) Prostitution is illegal so is pirating in Thailand...again consult your local policeman. i never said it wasn't illegal , just that the risks of hiring a hooker and byuing a pirate DVD are not comparable to the risks of buying or using drugs

so once again , in your self rightgeousness , what are you telling us? the poor guys were right to buy and use drugs? and we are all idiots except you because there are many other things illegal ?

You are obviously not the brightest of bulbs are you...Plus you're getting frustrated at me for your inability to get your head round a very simple concept.

    So once more...again...and again:

Quote you: "i used to do all kinds of drugs and illegal shit in MY country" unquote...You proove the point...You have absolutley sod all judgement to pass on anyone else.

(BTW...You keep writing 'us' referring to who exactly? I'm guessing it's the other dense sods.)

  12. So you are on your bike (motorcycle) its after 12pm, your accompanied by your lady for hire, you've drunk copious amounts of beer beforehand....neither of you are wearing helmets. You stop off for some street side som-tam, further alcholic refreshments and smoke a few cigarettes while you are at it....Then its back to yours with your bint to finish the night off with some bedroom gymnastics (maybe some Viagra chucked in to the mix) while watching a couple of pirated porno DVDs you bought on the street.

So if you wake up in the morning feeling guilty just repeat these lines in penance...

We all know pornography is illegal in Thailand. We've to respect that.

    <deleted> OPEN YOUR EYES!

    and your point is??????????? .....

all of the above are nothing to compared with drug abuse ..... and since when is it illegal to drink in the street and smoke in public place? as for the helmets if you don't wear one , and get caught , somnomna ..... hiring a prostitute or buying a porn DVD will not land you in jail anyway...... still i reiterate , what is your point????? are you saying that its not normal that they got busted? that they were right to buy and use drugs? WHAT ?????? explain to me what is the truth you want us all to understand ............

OK I'll explain it just for you...

    1) Who says drugs are worse than alcohol, cigarettes, driving a motorcycle under the influence, contributing to the world of pirating, pornography, prostitution, the sell of prescription drugs over the counter ...Who is in a position to judge....Have you never done anything illegal?

  15. What a bunch of dim-witted censorious moralists!! You actually seem to think that the mere carrying of drugs is evil, and that taking them is terrible, and that this poor woman deserves this sentence. You obviously think that prohibition is sensible and right.

The "war on drugs" is an idiocy that has created most of the criminality in the world today and cost society untold billions and untold misery. Drugs should be decriminalised and state-controlled, with support and care for addicts. That policy would be an immense improvement on the current state of affairs worldwide (except in a few enlightened European countries), costing the whole lot of us far far less in taxes and suffering.

People who support the current drastic penalisation of drug-takers and drug-traders are simply out to lunch.

Quite right, give them all they want for free. On the condition they have to take it all in one go.

Pity we haven't got pol pot in control, he would have you topped as well.

You are an idiot...I'm half Cambodian, my mother was one of the lucky ones (unlike her 2 sisters). I dare you to say something like that to her face...she'd kick the crap out of you! Come to think of it give me your address.

People like you, and a lot of the other pious hypocrites on this thread are all for executing people and handing out heavy sentences...So tell me what should be done say with all the prostitutes and those who solicite their services?

I suppose none of the terribly upright citizens writing here have ever indulged a prostitutes services, or heaven's above located to Thailand to specifically take advantage of this totally ilegal aspect of Thai culture. How many years of incarciration should offenders recieve? What about those who have used services and contracted and spread HIV? Should they be executed for spreading a terminal disease.

My point..You're an idiot! No one is perfect, killing is not the answer and asolutely no one has the right to play God.

FYI If you think my analogy is ridiculous ....Pol Pot killed over 2 million people.

  16. BREAKING NEWS! BREAKING NEWS! BREAKING NEWS! BREAKING NEWS! BREAKING NEWS!...phoaw!

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not underestimating the gravity of the disease itself, but if the total this year is “1,675 so far” compared to “Last year saw a total of 91,003 patients, with 65,581 cases in 2007”...well, this thread strikes me as slightly sensationalist?

Perhaps the inclusion of an overview of the disease itself would be more appropriate at the start of the thread with a complete listing of the statistics including: ratios/numbers of people suffering from the less voracious form of dengue who survived/or not as opposed to the same ratio/numbers caused by the second form (hemorrhaging)of dengue, the worst areas hit and at what time of the year and perhaps the inclusion of an overview of the disease itself…

(Cue smartarse with link to such a thread on the forum…S.A. you’ve missed the point!)

…With as an afterthought a comparison to the number of say, road accidents in the same period.

People scare easily, but is this particular subject worthy of our emotions when compared to other areas…like reckless driving and its relation to obtaining a driving permit within half an hour as is the case in Thailand or unprotected sex and the increase of Aids by god knows how much in the last few yeras?

  17. Police bust swinging party, arrest 13 foreign men

BANGKOK: -- Police raided a swinging party in a Bangkok hotel late Wednesday night and arrested 13 foreign men, seven Thai women and three foreign women.

The raid took place at 0:15 am Thursday at the Elizabeth Hotel on Praditpat Road in Samsen district.

Police also arrested a couple - Christian Richards and his Thai wife, for allegedly organising the swinging sex tour.

When police raided the room No 1101 on the 11th floor of the hotel, police found several couples were having sex in the same room while others were drinking and dancing.

Police found used condoms, lubricant gel, porno books and CDs and 30 pills of Viagra.

    -- The Nation 2009-02-05

We all know that Thai women don't do things like this.

    Only Farang do this.

They make nice Thai women bad!!!!!!!!

At the risk of appearing somewhat dense...I hope to the administrative powers that be, you're joking, and that your remark is heavily laden with sarcasm...if not, then I suggest you go forth and multiply my friend.

All joking aside, I think the police and media's actions are yet another example of the up-surging nationalistic undercurrent prevalent in Thailand today. Most foreigners subscribe to the idea that news like this is, and has been around for ages, but having been here for more than eight years now I definitely get the feeling that more and more actions of vindication against foreigners living/coming to Thailand are occurring. Could this be by deferral of the real problems facing Thailand by its own people....Ironically, the remark in quotes above (even if it is a joke) is the perfect example of the problem..."People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones."

  18. Hi All,

I was previously working in Thailand and had a work permit. I left that job and took some time off, but didn't communicate with the department of employment that I had left that job.

After leaving that job I left Thailand for a month and returned a month later on a toursit visa. Since then I've been taking some time off and have been on the go in/out x3 1 month tourist visas (i.e. crossing the border 3 consecutive months in and out of Thailand). During this last month (the third of the maximum 1 month tourist visas allowed) I was proposed another job in Thailand.

    My prospective employer has informed me of the requirements to go out of the country for another Non Img B visa before eventually applying for another work permit...my questions are;

"Will having previously held a Non Img B visa and work permit have any ramifications on applying for a new one?"

"Should I show my old work permit to the consulate where I apply for the new Non Img B visa?"

"Will the fact that I have been here on the maximum x3 1 month tourist visas endanger my chances of getting a Non Img B visa?"

"Where are the best places to go on a Non Img B visa run?"

"Which of these destinations for a Non Img B would be the best/most assured of success?"

    "Which is the cheapest?"

Thank You In Advance For Any And All Correspondance!
