  1. "It is the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and South Korea who are asking for US backup in confronting China, not the other way around." That was true, but it is also true that the Americans had to lobby brutally hard to keep S. Korea out of China's development bank. Much to its distaste, even japan had to recognise Chinese power and strength. The tide is turning and, hopefully, soon the evil empire will be swept out of Asia. The funny part is that China will not have to bankrupt the US by suckering them into an arms race sort of like the Americans did to Russia. Osama Bin laden has done that already.

  2. I believe that most Thai banks do not like issuing credit cards to foreigners. Back in the days of the 90s crash a lot of frang filled up their credit cards and fled the country. I got one back in 2001 and it has been a never ending circus ever since. For a few months I was stalked by a mystery biker interested in my credit card. Eventually it turned out he was on a mission from Visa to upgrade my card to Gold. When head office saw that they had upgraded my card they couldn't figure out how I had got a card in the first place.

  3. I am usually a fanatically punctual person BUT. Years ago I had a job interview in Bangkok. The taxi took me to the wrong school branch. After discovering the error the taxi was gone and I had to walk out of the school and get another taxi at approx 5.00 pm. Bangkok traffic! I showed up for at the correct school branch for my interview about an hour late. I was horrified and worried whether it was even worth my while going in that late. When I met my interviewer I was grovelling as much as I could grovel - and he could not figure out my problem. 'We are both here now so let's talk." I got the job!

  4. Thanks, you are replacing me. This will be the first year in 15 that I have not enjoyed Songkran in the idyllic paradise of Ban Dan Lan Hoi - with real Thai food, mosquito net with fist sized holes in it and water that is burning hot from sitting in a pipe in the sun all day. As the only farang for miles around, I can behave like an idiot 24/7, I get all the LaoKhao I can drink and I get parade participants breaking rank to run over and give me more. I have never been asked for money or anything else. I do try to put on a firework display but that is all my idea. And why am I breaking this tradition? To enjoy the bland food, piss poor beer, foul climate and obnoxious neighbours of my homeland - Scotland. But, as a native son, I feel it is my duty to try to help my countrymen break free from their colonial masters.

  5. Who would want to hits us over here in Bangkok? Doesn't add up. I wonder if the threats are indeed foreign or related to some recent foreign involvement/comments in the politics over here...

Hmmm - why would anyone not love Americans?

Because they are blowing up Iranian scientists? No, it can't be that.

Because they are pissing on dead Afghani farmers they have just murdered? No, absolutely not.

Because they are sabotaging Russian satellites? No, no, no

Because they murdered an unarmed old man in front of his family and called it justice? You must be joking!

  6. The Thai government is using the same common sense that it used to deal with the tsunami. Back then the Thais told the Americans and other glory seeking so-called donors to stick their promises where the sun don't shine. Thailand recuperated fairly rapidly. Those counting on Western promises of aid are still suffering. For a prime example of where American aid gets you take a look at Haiti. Thailand can look after itself and the further it keeps itself from American aid the better.

  7. Thanks Mario for setting the record straight. The swastika was used in Europe for eons as a good luck, good life symbol before the Nazis got their hands on it. Go check out the Carlsberg brewery in Copenhagen, it is covered in swastikas - and all of them pre 1939.

I can remember seeing a Swastika badge on the shirt of a BTS station cashier/clerk a few months ago. You can see them on bags , T-shirts, Even on the painted company buses that are everywhere, Clearly WW2 was something missing from the ciriculum in Thailand

The swastika is a religious symbols, don't mix it up with the nazi swastika. See the link in my earlier post.

  8. Thank you Oh Great America. What would we do without your guidance? :)

Every time your ass is in the vise you come running and begging to us Yanks.

With out us you be speaking German right now :D

Thank you for the Hollywood version of history. The real story actually tells of the Russians winning the war in Europe with the Yanks playing a small bit part as a diversion. Yes, the Yanks won the war in Asia - not by fighting soldiers but by dumping nuclear bombs on civilians. Since then what have you done? Ran away from Vietnam, ran away from Somalia, ran away from Saudi Arabia... oh, sorry, a great American victory invading Panama. George Bush will go down in history as the man who handed Iraq to Iran on a platter... and how long before that great American battle tactic of running away will happen in Afghanistan?
