    re mange.

what we in the west call mange .... most thai vets call it scabies!

    thats my experience anyway :)

    dave2

That's interesting because I've volunteered for 3 dog foundations from here to Koh Phangan, and all the Thai vets referred to the mange as mange.

I'm not one to disagree that your experience was different, I just thought it interesting is all =)...

    Potato potaatoh I suppose.

  2. Yeah well that makes sense. We just recently had a mouse problem. Duh. Will get that taken care of asap.

The dogs are not really a deterrent. They bark at it and it just stays there in defense mode. I don't want to take chances on one of them getting bit.

Also thanks I'll check out more snake related topics. Like what to do when you get bit and where to go for help.

    thanks everyone!

  3. So I've seen many snakes around here, and for the most part I feel fine with them. It's the jungle, it's their territory, no problem. But last night coming home with the groceries I noticed the dogs going batshit in the backyard. I turned the corner and saw they were barking at a cobra. It was standing with the hood raised and all.

I could have had a heart attack. It's the first time I saw one on the defense mode. The hood is pretty impressive. Well it had no problem overstaying it's welcome. It was there in the same spot for 20 minuets while I tried to figure out a plan to get inside and just let it go on it's merry way.

Since it was hanging out, pissed off at the backdoor, I just waited until it left and let the dogs out in the street so not to tempt fate.

My question is: Is there an organic way to keep them off the property? I've got a small backyard and I don't want them around. There are too many people going in and out of my house at all times of the day and night. And seeing how territorial this one was, I can tell it's not easy to just shoo them away with a broom, without killing them.

  4. We have been feeding a stray dog in the evening for about a month now, when she first came to us she looked like she had been in a nazi concentration camp, now she is fattening up but is very timed and infested with fleas. In Australian supermarkets you can buy cards with small tubes of flea repellent on them which you put on the skin on the back of the neck and it gets rid of the fleas for a month. Does anyone know if it is available here and where you can purchase it.

You can go to P.A.W.S in Chalong, it will have it for cheaper, half the cost than most vets in town.

If you're willing to travel with the dog to the vet you can also get a tick and flea shot. The combo of the Frontline (topical meds) with the injection should rid the pup of fleas in no time.

Also look out out for mange. If the pup has had fleas for quite some time this can lead to mange and then it'd need a dermatrix treatment, (depending on the severity) also available for low cost at PAWS.

    Good luck!

  5. My friend came to Phuket to visit me from Bangkok. She found out about the Buddhist holiday and wanted to change her ticket date but she had to do it within 48 hours. Well she was 6 hours short of the deadline, so now she has a ticket for tomorrow morning. She's willing to change her name over to whoever wants it. It just seems such a waste to let it go, 1300 baht down the toilet. Staying in Nai Harn....

Now we're looking at one way tickets for Wednesday and can't find anything under 2,000 baht. On Wego.com it offers a price of 1,160 baht but then just redirects us to Airasia where it's that same 2,000 baht price. What's up with that?

  6. Just came to Bangkok and dropped it off at the Canon shop. No middle man, hopefully get back before 2 months, we'll see.

Thanks for all the replies people!!! :)

  7. Hi all,

Looking for places aside from JJ market and Pratunam Market to look for these items wholesale: (Pashmina, sarves, hill tribe jewelery)

Also if anyone knows of anywhere in Bangkok where they make these really pretty multicolored silk scarves found all over the major tourist areas in Cambodia, this info would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you, thank you thank you, in advance!!! :)

  8. Great thanks a lot.

Zpete, that was rather brave to wash it off, but hey it works. I guess as long as there's no smoke coming out then the camera should be fine right? :)

  9. Thanks, could anyone tell me where this place is?

    Holy shizer! 2 months!!!

I'm going to Bangkok this week perhaps I can just gut out the middle man...

  10. Dropped my camera while on motorbike while doing 40k, yes stupid but now saddened, as it's my newest purchase and I use it everyday of my life.

Can anyone recommend a place to repair my little Canon Powershot 880. It fell but amazingly this awesome little camera suffered no damage to the screen, however non of the buttons really work and it just takes pictures on it's own.

Is there a shop that anyone here can recommend? Last time my camera fell in a pool of water and every camera shop I went to said it was unrepairable, and then just offered me to buy new ones from there shop, luckily after drying out over night it worked again.

I just want somewhere honest and helpful to go to.

    Thanks for any input...!!! :)

  11. I also go to Nai Harn frequently and I've been noticing Thai guys with body boards and whistles keeping an eye on the crowd. Life guards? Humanitarians? I don't know, but I saw a one of them go in after an older gent to help him from being sucked in and pounded by the brutal waves yesterday.

Two weeks ago a couple of older Thai guys were just watching the waves and ran screaming to me for my board to help a girl who nearly drowned in the huge waves. The red flags are up and people are still swimming. It's just nice to see the community keeping an eye out for those who are in the water.

  12. I think McDonalds are great. I have visited their stores on numerous occasions and never had a problem with being short changed.

But this is probably due to the fact that I wouldn't touch their food even with a 10ft barge pole :D , I just find them a useful place to stop if I need to use a toilet :)

I agree the bathrooms are a great and easy way to relieve yourself. The food? ickkkkk

  13. I went to Rick at Cobra and it just so happens that we grew up near each other so not only did he sell me a good board (Ben Player) but he gave me a discount! Yay! Can't wait till this black cloud of doom passes so I can get back in the water. Storm storm go away!

Once you get used to riding waves on the body board, and learn how to position yourself on the wave; where to be while the wave is moving, you'll want to graduate onto a surfboard.

Body boarding is fun for sure, surfing is even more fun.

I've been able to ride the waves in, well mostly white water. Yesterday however was a breakthrough, I actually learned how to ride the wave properly. It'll be a while till I move on to the surf board. I'm addicted to body boarding for now!! :)

  14. I feed the soi dogs in Nai Harn and concentrate mostly around Yanui. I used to get scared when dogs chased me, but dog psychology is pretty easy to understand. If one starts chasing you just stop, it's like a game to them the faster you go. If you ever watch dogs play they tease each other and they play "chase" all the time. The barking is because you're in their territory, but try not to show fear. It just wants to scare you, but if you're not scared they'll digress and find something else to do.

    Good luck! :)

  15. Very happy with Banana IT at Home Pro, good discount when paying cash and great service.

I really like Banana IT as well, I bought some great speakers there, the only thing is that they have a no refund policy. Good sales though an the staff is really friendly. Also sometimes if you pay with cash instead of credit they'll give you a decent discount, just ask!

  16. Since service/warrantee are lousy all over Thailand, I would buy anywhere where they have a good offer.

I saw my mac book at the Apple store in Central for a hundred dollars more than what I paid for it in the States. The IT dept. is fantastic there too. Good luck! :)

  17. I went to Rick at Cobra and it just so happens that we grew up near each other so not only did he sell me a good board (Ben Player) but he gave me a discount! Yay! Can't wait till this black cloud of doom passes so I can get back in the water. Storm storm go away!

  18. I smell a RAT burger!

First we have get 'getgoin!" who joined TV in dec takes about 5 or 6 months to get a place off the ground, I guess to get some cred, then shalimar who obviously runs the place as a newbie with 4 posts and offering free margaritas, then gobalguppy 23 posts giving a glowing report, how much is the beer?

Then on top a mod that's had a free drink but not yet had the food.

I have seen some cunning marketing before but this is class, well done boys. Maybe onnut is an old friend, investor?,

Maybe I am off the target but you look like one.

How am I a rat burger!? :) I'm just telling it like it is, just like I raved about the Angry Pizza Man (Focasscia Pizzeria) on the pier road in Chalong, and several other places that are my favorite places to eat. I can't spell focasscia for the life of me but I suggest you check that place out too. Before I go off topic let's get back to rat burger!

Mmmm rat burger..... I bet they could grill a really good rat burger as long as it's served smothered in that creamy buttery sauce from the 7th layer of heaven AND with those mashed potatoes!!!! :D Why do I do this to myself at 1am?

For those of you having trouble picturing the location in your heads:

Drive down the beach road in Patong beach will be on your left hand side.

I reckon you drive slowly on your right hand side for about 2 minuets .

You will soon see a Starbucks. Look up and there's a sign that says Chicago Steakhouse. It's about the size of Mars.

    Find parking and run inside!

Oh wine by the glass is 150 for the house wines. A bit more than I'd like to pay and the beers are average. I stuck to water, not wanting to fill my belly with anything other than the food!

  19. Oops botched up that last post...

Scudman- thanks for checking out that shop. Could you reply with your thoughts on that shop out there? I'll do the same for Cobra.. kaaaaaa!

  20. Does the shop in Surin have boogie boards? I am going by there today and could check it out for you. There is a Surf Shop on the road to Surin about 3 km from the Laguna turnoff in Cherng Talay. I not sure if we are talking about the same one. Anyway, going today to check it out.

    Where are you riding?

I believe we're talking about the same one and it seems they have everything including bodyboards http://www.saltwater-dreaming.com/shopping/products.htm

I ride mostly at Nai Harn since I live right next to it. Sometimes I like Yanui because I can bring my dog along, but only during hightide because the rocks are killer. Where do you ride?

Anyway, what would I do without this forum?!?! Thanks for the replies.. I'm going to check out Cobra today! :)

  21. I went to the steakhouse tonight and the food was, well it's the best dam_n steak I've had in Asia. Being a carnivore and a steak junky I give this place 2 thumbs up. I had the 700oz. top sirloin slathered beneath a buttery mushroom cream . REAL mashed potatoes and a salad bar with all sorts of salads ranging from pasta salads, potato salads, chicken salads, grilled veg salads, etc.. and of course just greens and several choices of dressing, with everything included (steak dish and all you can eat salad bar) 600 baht. Two people helped with my meal but I still had to have it wrapped up.

My mate had the Ny strip steak topped with a burbon bbq sauce, horse radish mashed potatoes, and the salad bar. 400ish baht.

Both steaks cooked perfect medium rare. I'm drooling on my keyboard! MUST GO BACK SOON!!!!

Pretty romantic venue without being pretenscious too.
