I do think that the economic 'situation' has a lot to do with it... not only with the scarcity of jobs but with the overabundance of teachers. However, Chiang Mai is a very popular place for young farang teachers, including myself, which means it's not a fair image of the teaching situation around the country.
I've recently spoken to a number of teachers in Issan, including non-native English speakers, who had little trouble finding jobs.
So how's your Thai?

Currently, Chiang Mai is quite alright. Since Abhisit put the red shirts in Bangkok on buses to their hometowns, however, the potential for trouble in Chiang Mai has increased. It was just reported on national television that the number of red shirts in CM has tripled in the last 20 minutes.

I heard this rumor a few days ago. A few times since then, (when I've had the correct change) I've experimentally paid drivers only the 15 baht. Only 2 drivers actually complained, and even then it was only a half-hearted request for 20 baht before driving off.
In the past, I've had drivers try to charge me 40 or even 50 baht and STILL give me a hard time when I only wanted to pay 20... but I just want to be sure I'm not actually ripping these guys off (for a change). Anyone know the real story?

Are there are trails that go up Doi Suthep from the west side of town?

Naw snuff is for your nose, not your mouth. I've never seen snus except when a buddy brought it back from Sweden. Great stuff, but I think your chances are pretty slim.

I'm looking for a job. How much you paying?

Do you know how much the American consulate charges?

I have hunted through dingy streetside department stores, the great halls of Kad Suan Kaew, and the infinite threads on this very forum for something that should be found everywhere. I need a laundry stand (one of those racks, not lines for hanging) and can't find one. Help?

I'm surprised no-one mentioned Warm Up Bar. The rest are all great establishments, particularly farang looking for a comfortable, familiar setting. What I like about Warm-Up, however, is that they have live music in the back, but if you just want to relax to the music of some conversation, you don't have to be in that area. Unless, of course, they have two bands playing, in which case you get some variety at the very least. As for being the only person there, it'll never happen. There's more danger in the place being too crowded, which is why I generally go on Monday nights Never had a problem meeting friendly people, either, whether farang or local (mostly CMU students).

Sorry - I guess I have to work on mastering the site's search feature.
Thanks for the help!

It seems like every time I order a cup of tea at a restaurant they bring me Lipton's Yellow Label. I crave some real nice green or white, whether at a restaurant or a teahouse. I know there are tea places around, but have yet to find one. Any suggestions? Please include name, location, and price.

Regardless of your situation you can probably find what you're looking for in Chiang Mai if you have any semblance of financial security.
Ah! No wonder I can't get any!

The question is how to distinguish between those looking for a hookup, a husband, or a customer?

I thought the chips were pretty subpar, but at least served as a vessel for the salsa. The burritos, though, were great (for Thailand) - much better than Migeul's up the street. For example, the vegetable burrito actually had vegetables in it! Go figure! The guacamole, for an extra 30B, was served liberally, which surprised and pleased me. I don't know anyone who would walk away still hungry, either. I recommend it.

I saw one at Kad Suan Kaew in that big clothing store... what is it called... Central? You know, the big one.

I'm only 20 (just a child) and have found a very supportive and welcoming community here. Dropping by Tuskers any night of the week is a good way to make friends. another great way is taking a conversational Thai class - the locals are very friendly and really appreciate the effort.

The food and company were amazing. As a newbie to Chiang Mai, I continue to be surprised and delighted at the friendliness and supportiveness of the community here - online and in person.

Someone mentioned they charge extra... anyone know how much?

As a newcomer I thought I'd get off to a good start by making a complaint.
It just amazes me how many posters recommend places such as "Miguel's" without taking the trouble to describe clearly and in accurate detail where these places are.
Its as if they were old hands writing to one another. And when they sometimes make a half hearted effort its so sketchy as to be quite useless to a newcomer.
There you are. Gripe over.
What gets me is the signs for institutions that no longer exist...

Haha I actually walked past this show, unsuspecting, and was very impressed. I am actually on the forum trying to find other exhibitions Really great stuff, everyone resonsible should be proud.

I have actually been surprised at the number of Mac stores around. I have only rarely been able to walk around for a significant amount of time without seeing one.

How are the prices?

More hostility than anticipated...
Powerhouse Gym
in Chiang Mai
Posted
If you can afford it, it's really difficult to beat Powerhouse's equipment. I don't just mean the machines - they have all the free weights and equipment for body-movement exercises that most people should need. As long as you don't expect a bouldering wall, parallel bars, a punching bag, or other sport-specific equipment, you shouldn't be disappointed. It's also obviously super convenient to those of us along Nimman.
