1. I've been calling around in Pattaya trying to book a room for two nights, arriving the 30th, leaving the 1st.

All the hotels want a credit card to hold a room. I don't have one right now; I recently took a job in Taiwan and the banks here turn out to refuse credit to us foreign devils because we earn at least 1.5X what the locals earn by law in order to be allowed a work permit, er, I mean because we're unreliable and skip out on our bills at a moment's notice just like the locals do. My U.S. bank, meanwhile, decided "ZOMG he's not in the USA we better cut off his card in case it gets stolen and fraudded!"

Anyway, so I'm <deleted> on credit cards right now.

Am I going to be able to find a room if I just show up with $300 in cash? I don't require a 5-star hotel, but by the same token I really don't want to stay in another roach motel like last time.

  2. Just realized, you mean "capacitive silicone".

Try also "conductive silicone"; I'm not sure if there's a difference between what is used in stylus tips and what is used for circuits. You might be able to mix your own. Looks like it's just plain old RTV with a lot of very fine metallic particles in it; you might be able to use ultrafine aluminum powder such as would be available in some paint shops, or maybe even mix in some ITO. Worth a try. However, be warned, this might also scratch a touchscreen, especially over time; styluses might use a layer of plain RTV over the top to protect the screen (or maybe they don't, I haven't dealt with that type of stylus).

  3. My god why do people have such a hard time answering a simple question. My favorite bar in Pattaya is Champange I like the family atmosphere.

So can you tell us what you think is different about it compared to others of the same type - or were you just giving an example of how your question should be answered.......laugh.png

Like I said the family atmosphere. Mothers and daughters dancing together and free food. It is a clean place too. The staff showers a lot. Sometimes together and at least two or three times per night.

[furiously scribbling notes for my trip]

  4. Do you mean something like the "Jot" brand styluses? Those use an ITO coating on plastic to form a conductive surface.

If you want to make a custom stylus of some sort, it would probably be simplest just to buy some of the replacement disks for those (along with the ball-end steel connecting pin).

  5. I had it for a while, triggered by a rather nasty antibiotic-resistant infection that was improperly treated by my (American) doctors. Despite killing off the infection, for quite some time after that point I still got worse. All that anyone could really tell me was that it was "autoimmune", my immune system going haywire as a result of the long infection. At its worst, I was able to sit upright for about six hours a day -- not accomplish anything else, just sit up. My problems eventually mostly went away on their own after about 18 months. My overall energy levels have never really recovered, but that may just be hitting middle age.

A friend's brother was diagnosed with CFS when he was in high school, with no indication as to what started it off. It took about four years before he recovered.

There are probably several different underlying causes with similar overall symptoms -- sort of like how "dengue fever" is one of either three or four related viral infections. It's a "symptomatic diagnosis", not a specific one.

  6. Hate to break this to you, but unless things have changed. It takes 3 months since the exposure for a test to be conclusive. Correct me if i'm wrong.

RNA PCR is acceptable reliable within a week or so.

    Cool. Learned something today biggrin.gif

In your defence it did used to take a considerable time, but not for some time, thankfully Will is correct.

Depends on which test is used. IIRC, the PCR test is expensive and so is normally used only for blood-bank testing (to ensure that donated blood supplies aren't tainted). The regular antibody tests are much cheaper, but can only be relied upon after several weeks have passed (too early, and the body hasn't begun to react enough to the infection to be detected). Of course, if a patient wants to pay for the fast/expensive test, it's doable.

  7. Thanks for the great advice. It looks like I fought this one off with vitamins, rest and of course manliness. After one week of feeling really bad I think I have turned the corner. I don't think I will need the antibiotics this time, but it's good to know for the future. Thanks again.

    You incredible stud, you.

Last month, I had a cold/flu that morphed, through the miracle of secondary infection, into a sinus, ear, and bronchial infection. 250mg Cefuroxime every 12 hours for ten days (total of 20 tablets) was prescribed and worked well.

BTW, one of the generics for azithromycin available in Thailand is made by Sandoz. IIRC, it's called Binoz or something similar. DON'T use that; according to the doc at (insert name of major Bangkok medical-tourism hospital here), it doesn't work nearly as well as the real thing. Anecdotally, I can attest that the Sandoz generic wasn't doing much against a bug I'd acquired, whereas as soon as said doc switched me to the Pfizer-made drug, it cleared up right away.

  8. The bus I took to Koh Chang left from Ekkamai and stopped at Swampy. The bus I took from Koh Chang back to Bangkok stopped at Swampy before it went to Ekkamai.

So, there's definitely a bus station at the airport, and you might want to check on whether you can just hop onto the bus there instead of going all the way to Ekkamai first.

  9.
same happened to Samui, Tsunami damaged this coast as much as the other in its own way. given up in Samui after 10 years moved to Pattaya, if your going to live in a sh*t hole you may as well live for half the price.

Elegantly put!
Guess I'll set up shop there, then. Better go-go's anyway.

is there any demand for a foreign tutor/teacher (... U.S. history, U.S. legal system)?

Probably about the same demand as there is in the U.S. for teachers of Thai history or the Thai legal system.
This is why I prefaced that question by asking about expats on the island -- in the event that they might want their kids taught. Oh well.

  11. I am in a fairly portable licensed profession that can mostly be done over the internet. (The non-"mostly" part, I can maintain an office in the U.S. for.) I'm seriously thinking about getting out of the U.S. permanently.

How difficult is it for a working foreigner to get a longterm visa to Thailand, rent a house with internet on Koh Chang, and just camp out on the beach when not writing stuff for customers? What are costs like? I'm not looking for fancy. A concrete/tile box, with water, gas, electric, and internet is about all I need as far as infrastructure. I rather liked the Lonely Beach area when I was there a couple of years ago.

Also, is there much expat presence on the island, and is there any demand for a foreign tutor/teacher (math through multivariate calculus, computer science, English, U.S. history, U.S. legal system)?

I stand corrected! Your right: Hong kong Foot!

Better than Hong Kong Dong. A friend of mine went to Bumrungrad with something horrible happening to his willie, and the doc told him that was what he had, and the only cure was immediate amputation of the affected organ. Well, as you might imagine, he wasn't too happy with that, so he went to a small clinic that some geezer in a bar recommended to him. The doc there said, those Bumrungrad doctors, always recommending expensive procedures! Wait a few days, schlong fall off all by itself!
