Interesting that we are (nearly) all socialists now.

As kids we were all "Walt Disneyed" into believing the home of democracy etc. Plainly the voting system is not democratic. How many million more votes does Biden have (last election also; the loser had many more votes than Trump)? The State legislatures have honoured the memory of Gerry Mander when setting house seat boundaries. The Senate seems to be the more important legislative chamber. Here North Dakota equals California in representation.
I suggest that a study of the Decline of the Roman Republic (not empire) could be useful.

I agree with Car 720 - the Humble Rupert Organisation is a danger to information and democracy.

Sorry about the fires - tragic for those affected. If you run short of "plonk", we have plenty in OZ.

Smoking does reduce the risk or impact of Parkinson's disease.
I smoke and try to avoid inconveniencing others. Some anti smokers travel great distances to be offended.
I tell off smokers who throw butts on the ground (great idea to get rid of filterless cigs (I don't count Camel - can't get into them).
Those of us who are hooked have to be careful and others, try to be tolerant.

I would love an explanation of why 6 Taliban inmates have been transferred to Qatar. One of them, a member of the Afghan army, shot three Australian Diggers in a camp they were sharing, while they were off duty and playing cards. He then shot through and was later recaptured and sentenced to life in prison. The whole deal stinks.

Ah history rolls on. Cocaine was available at chemist shops in Australia until the late 1920's. Heroin was the drug administered for childbirth in Australia until the early 1950's ( US pressure put an end to that). Queen Victoria used to drink laudanum which contained opium or heroin before bed. Britain went to war with China because they would not exchange their tea for opium and wanted silver (hello Hong Kong) I don't have an all encompassing answer but plainly the prohibition is not working, just as alchohol prohibition in the US only succeeded in making organised crime fantastically wealthy. I personally think grass or hash should be available to those over a certain age (16?). Not familiar enough with the others to give a considered opinion, although I have had a line of coke and can see the attraction, and had a stumbling attempt at smoking in an opium den.

Frankly, I am happy at any protest against "the Humble Rupert Organisation". They are rags and they are insidious in UK, USA and the old homeland, OZ.

Good on you Putin - I'd love to have a drink with him - "What's your poison Vlad?" I'd ask.

Anti social media has a lot to answer for. Before online, idiots were usually isolated and ignored by people in their residential areas. Now they can find enough other idiots online, to reinforce to themselves that they were right all along. this is an increasing danger to civil society.

I wish them all luck and well managed fire fighting. I live in OZ and know the threat.

Vietnam historically dislikes China and has done for centuries. They have long memories and remember China's occupation several centuries ago. This is something that the West might have considered after WW2 when their anti commie policies led to an anti Vietnam position. Yes I know, wise after the event; but surely there were some experts who could have been wise at the time.

Hopefully it will lead to complete legalization one day and be accompanied by further restrictions on the true demon drugs that plague society, namely alcohol and tobacco.
Rooster is obviously not a fan of Winston Churchill, on both counts.
I normally like his columns, but this trend is off putting to me.
I agree with the start of his sentence.

The generals are wowsers (look it up if you have to). I smoke and try to be considerate. Some crypto fascist non smokers travel a considerable distance to complain. I also have not dropped butts for 30 years (getting rid of unfiltered cigarettes was a really good idea???). The increase in Buddha days and the enforcement makes me consider the worth of a trip to a land I have visited many times since the gob smacking first visit in 1972.

There used to be smoking and non-smoking sections on planes. Why not reclining and non reclining sections? I personally am not a recliner and people who suddenly drop back full blast, give me the irrits. I use business these days on longer flights.

He and his band featured in a so so Movie called The Girl Can't Help it. It was electrifying, the only thing about the movie that was, unless you wanted to perve on Jane Mansfield.

Regrettably you cannot download the app if your version of Android is too old. Not sure how old, but mine is on an 8 year old phone.

Well he hasn't minded bankruptcy, personally, in the past.

I live in OZ and have bum guns - this may seem selfish, but if I did not have them I still cannot understand why some people bought massive amounts of dunny paper (I use a little). Now limited purchases in supermarkets - you can only buy 20 rolls or so. I still cannot figure why people thought it would be crucial. Factories are going 24 hours a day.

Fires in East Gippsland are still going. They ended up with 5 - 10mm only. Has helped a bit.

Isn't Shane Fitzsimmons in charge of the fires in NSW.
ScoMo and his family deserved a holiday just the same as any other working Australians.
Former PMs holiday in Oz. When Morrison went to Hawaii, he had to be accompanied by 4 Fed police officers for security. Adds up cost wise. Previous PMs unwound locally at much less cost to our taxes. Other working people cover their own costs.
