  1. Vision Center in Rajvitthi Rd

I went here with my prescription from RAM and he dismissed it saying he would give me a free test as he didn't trust their results. After his comprehensive and highly technical procedures he gave me the resulting lenses for my approval and they were fine. He then gave me another pair of lenses to try and I said "no thanks, the first pair was much better". He then told me the second pair was the RAM prescription.

  2. A bit more run down but much better prices and service _ McCormick.

In my limited experience at McCormick ( I beat a hasty retreat after a revealing interview with a surgeon) I suggest it is just laughable to say the service is "better" than RAM where it's excellent. McCormick's is rough and not so ready. And in my one case incompetent.

  3. keep a spray bottle of 50 --50 water and white vinager and spray everyother day or so around your window seals and screens andunder you kitchen table and under you sink

I had the same problem as the OP and spent weeks fiddling about spraying with this and that round the kitchen until I finally used my head and traced them back to their nest which was just below the kitchen window outside in the garden. After pouring a few big pans of boiling water on the nest followed by copious amounts of bleach I've not seen any in the kitchen since and that was about five weeks ago. Very satisfying.

  4. Thank for this. How much is the car from Smile Rentals, and what sort of car is it? My parents actually get here on the 15th of Jan..

I've not rented her car before but she tells me it's in good condition and runs well.Unfortunately, (although I'm getting it cheaper as I've known her a few years)she is charging 900 baht per day and its a Mitsubishi (Lenter??)and its 18 years old ; 1993 !! sad.png. You could always go and have a look at it ; its very conveniently located if you're in Chiang Mai. And even haggle.

If this puts you off, the"journey" people at 800 baht with a much newer car (but NOT NEW) might be more appealing. You must book online and transfer the money as instructed ;( 3 days before you want it.). Slightly eccentric but I've not yet had any problems with them. Just make sure, as you would with any firm, the petrol guage shows FULL before take-off.

Really good, friendly service. He buffed out a heap of tree wax that didn't look like it was gonna come out. Have been going back regularly since. 180b for clean, polish, and vacuum."

Surely Pop could tweak the machinery to fit.giggle.gif

Professional service and the best rates in CM. 800 baht compared to 1500baht.Top of Thaphae Road ; round the corner from Art Cafe.I've used them on a number of occaisions. Not had a manual though.

An excellent lady to rent a manual from is SMILE RENTALS a few meters down Ratchadamnoen Road walking West from the big Thapphae Square. She has a desk in Niyom Phanich Store. She mostly rents motorcycles but she also has a car she rents. Insurance included of course. Again, a totally professional service and a most delightful lady to deal with who speaks quite good English. The car is not available from 9th January till 15th January because I'm renting it.

  7. QUOTE SK :

"Am not sure why its so inporatant to you to keep asking about the weight of sk currys and meat content ??"

Weight and meat content not important? I think someone must challenge that. The weight of the Chicken Tikka Marsala without rice at 99baht is labeled as 300 gms on the container and weighs about 325gms.Presumably the container weighs 25gms. At 99baht it's a tasty product, if you shield your eyes against the startling red glare, and works out at 0.33 baht per gram. Enough for one.A little thin, but suits me.

Curry Nights is a bit of a problem as its labeled 360gms. (without rice) and actually weighs 500gms. (though sometimes a little less) So, assuming the packaging weighs 50gms that's 450gms of curry for 169baht=0.37+ per gram. Practically the same. Enough for two. Though why its marked 360gms and often weighs 500gms. is a bit puzzling.

There's certainly loads of meaty chunks in Curry Nights so not many throw a party when they find one.For my taste its just too oily.Very oily. Very Indian.I wonder what that oil is.Ghee?

It's up to you;take your choice. It's just a matter of taste. Pricewise they"re very similar.

  8. Welcome to the forum Mapguy

I don't understand this "Welcome to the Forum"chant by so many responders. Mapguy has made 1226 posts on this Forum and he's been a Member since 2007 about 4 years. "I've been lurking on this site for a number of months", says Mapguy. How many, may I ask ? 48? "Basically new to Chiang Mai", he says. Really? How come he's a super advanced member? All a little confusing.

  9. I would not suggest anyone come off anti-dep. medication without doctor advice but this UK education program is about the best there is :-

    http://www.clinical-depression.co.uk/

    Solid reviews,no hype.Step-by-step method.They also have a support forum.

It makes you aware of what is happening day-to-day.

My cousin only got worse on anti-deps as did my friend.

Good course, especially at this time of year.

If you want to boost your mood try Rhodiola/B complex/Vitamin A + walnuts.

Walnuts boost serotinin (happy chemical) and Rhodiola slows the decay of serotonin in the brain...like a cheap natural anti-dep. pill).Rhodiola makes you so happy/relaxed but to be avoided if bi-polar !

What a load of crepe. I sincerely hope Satori6 is not so naive as to be taken in by this nauseatingly depressing sales pitch. As most posters say, speak to a doctor and ignore the walnutters.

  10. QUOTE : TongueThaied :

"Some people worry about the coffee staying fresh. If the Mylar sacks are UNOPENED, you can (must) freeze them and they are perfectly preserved. NEVER open a frozen sack as moisture will immediately condense on the beans, and moisture is the enemy of coffee beans. After the sack reaches room temperature, I open it and put the contents in a Tupperware container that holds exactly a half kilo. NEVER refrigerate this Tupperware, as moisture will condense on the beans when you open it. Leave it at room temperature. Half a kilo lasts me about a 5-7 days. When I fill the grinder with the last of the coffee from the Tupperware, I take another sack out of the freezer to thaw for the next morning. Using this method, the last sack is as tasty as the first".

Interesting and informative post. The moisture problem has always bothered me as I return the small container to the fridge every time I use it. You say don't. Leave it at room temperature even for a week. So I'll do that. But I'm a bit puzzled when you say you use 250gms in 4/7 days. I drink about four cups a day and I'm sure 250gms lasts two or three weeks . I've never actually counted. Maybe you have a large family. I put 4/5 heaped teaspoonfuls of ground coffee from the metal bladed grinder into the pot to make three cups of coffee. How does that compare with your useage?

I agree with the post about Hillkoff. They do have a large variety of differently roasted beans and more to the point they do provide barista courses

800baht per day compared with North Wheels 1500baht. For the same Honda Jazz type car Not new but perfectly acceptable. No contest. Just make sure the petrol guage registers FULL before take off. The office is next to ART CAFE at the top end of Thappae Road. At this price you must follow the instructions and book by email and pay electronically.I've used the service a few times and it's all above board and professional.

"Also bought a "Curry Nights" Madras Chicken Curry.

Lots of meat and a very good taste - 85B."

    Quote thaimiller :

"I had a CTM last night it was 169thb but 350g of curry" taimiller.

How odd that one is half the price of the other!

    Do they do 175gm sizes?

  13. Unfortunately I can't recommend an ear specialist from personal experience but the PINNED TOPIC above of Medical Specialists does point to the Ear Eye Nose and Throat department of Ram Hospital which is the first place I would go to with such a problem. Maybe someone who has experience of an ear specialist will post.

  14. <snip> By the way, I searched for this topic using the box at the top of this page inserting the words-- curry nights--and the engine did not locate this topic. So its clearly a difficult product to find. It's not only me.licklips.gif

Just tried using curry nights in the search box. Worked fine, found this topic.

That maybe because when you seached for "curry nights" the topic had been moved to the top of page1 by my post. I cannot make the searchbox at the top right of this page searching "forums" or "this forum" find a topic, say at the bottom of page two. Page 1 is OK.

I was referring to Riming at Raumchok Meechok Plaza. But when I spoke with the supervisor, she said that this product was available in ALL Rimping branches. They are in the frozen section under the fresh eggs shelf, with a sign above the freezer stating "CURRY NIGHTS". It is the penultimate aisle on your right before you each the deli section. As far as I can recall they are in the freezer about 2nd or third down on your left. As far singing carols, flying, talking or walking etc......I have no idea. Good luck with your search. There are not that many freezers to choose from in that aisle.

Many thanks for those clear directions. I tried at the Riverside Branch with about six staff searching for it to no avail but the Meechok Branch is more convenient.Third time lucky.thumbsup.gif

  16. "CURRY NIGHTS"... Excellent curry. You cannot miss them because their packaging stands out from al the rest. Looks good...tastes good Chok Di Thai Pauly.

Well, I can miss them. I looked in the Meechok Rimping ; no luck. I asked at the information desk ; nothing doing. So, are they a frozen product/a ready meal or do they come on the open shelves in a packet form?

"their packaging stands out from the rest".

In what way exactly? Is it bigger, yellower, circular, purpler, does it fly, talk, walk, sing carols, does it eye you seductively as you rummage through the products? Does it purr or whirr as you come closer? Please clarify. And which branch are you referring to?

By the way, I searched for this topic using the box at the top of this page inserting the words-- curry nights--and the engine did not locate this topic. So its clearly a difficult product to find. It's not only me.licklips.gif

  17. I would suggest its not available in Chiang Mai in handy cans. There have been similar questions before and people come up with all sorts of possibilities but I've not been able to find it anywhere especially along the Chang Moi Road where some posters allege they've bought it in the past. It is available, as you say, in huge containers at the top end of Charoen Muaeng Road (1006) some dozens of metres on the right before it crosses the SuperHighway

  18. QUOTE NancyL : "It is always so darn noisy whenever I'm in Duke's. It's no wonder, with those brick walls and crowded conditions. You can barely chat with people at your own table. I wish they put up fabric wall hangings or other measures to dampen the noise. A friend pointed out they do have some tables outdoors, near the front door, so we may try that next time now that the weather is beautiful. I'd rather put up with cigarette smoke from nieghboring tables than the noise inside Duke's."

You don't give any clues about the style of restaurant you and hubby might favour but in contrast to The Dukes, which is usually crowded in the evenings (though I'm sure you'd find a table if it suited you) how about a small, quiet French restaurant with an excellent French chef and his charming wife who plays the role of hostess? Entirely different from the Dukes and even from Marco's which benefits from being a very popular watering hole handily positioned on the busy Lloy Kroh Road whereas La Fourchette is off the beaten track about 100 metres south down Prapokklao Road from the corner where this road meets Rachadamnoen Road. Intimate, maybe even romantic;you might even be on your own! You wouldn't be at The Dukes. Take your choice.

  19. Sorry you've had to wait nearly 24 hours for a reply to your simple question even though it attracted over 70 views. Strange. Maybe you've given up. Look in the list of pinned topics at the head of this forum and click on Greensides Map of Chiang Mai.

Once there, you see a list of places to the left of the srceen and the first entry is The Video Shop. Take no notice of this; skip it huh.gif and scroll down the list to find "The Other Video Shop" This is by far the best video shop in Chiang Mai but you do need to explore the dozens of catalogues stacked on shelves at the back of the shop.Almost hidden away. You can browse the thousands of films sitting at the coffee table. Its a gem of a place. The girl is both knowledgeable, helpful and speaks a little English. Its best to take out a subscription for about 1,500baht or more. Its much cheaper that way.

Go South down Nimmenheiminda to Suthep Road ; turn RIGHT at the lights ; turn LEFT at the next set of lights and the shop is just round this corner. On the left. Not on Suthep Road.

  20. Ah thats good news, do they have the bags at the bank or is it a bring them yourself?

I often pop into a bank to change 1 baht coins and I've never found any reluctance to oblige. On a couple of occaisions the cashier has proffered me the 100 baht note without actually bothering to count them. I always insist they do. I've never seen special bank bags for say 100baht. They usually seem to have them sellotaped together in stacks of ten as you appear to have noticed. I just shovel them into those small food bags.
