  1. Hi,

I'm going to Jomtien for the first time in 3+ years soon.

Last time I went I just bartered the first guy down to something like 1300 baht (between 2 of us this was cool).

Now I've read this thread it seems I'm feeding the scammers...Where do I go to get a taxi this distance?

I always get the metred taxis in BKK but who do I approach to get one to Jomtien from Suv airport??

  2. I like reading your posts Mark but would be sat at the opposite end of the bar to you. If you did drink that is.

You are either not intelligent enough to see how the U.S government works it's people over or you agree with U.S foreign policy. Your words up to present lead me to believe the latter.

Seeing as you've being very unashamedly honest (or the ultimate troll) up to now, I would like to ask if you think you are better than the average Vietnamese, Thai, Afghan, Iraqi citizen?

  3. Been to Thailand many many times before so I know the score about getting around BKK in general I just wanted to know if any more airport takeovers were due.

It's alright saying yeah yeah come and making cracks about flak jackets but I wouldn't want to have to sleep in an airport, that didn't look like fun to me.

    47.6!? I could get 60+ in 2008

  4. I wanted to come over for a 2 week recharge, to fly in about a week from now but I'm a little uneasy about the rallies going on in BKK at the mo. Can you guys having first hand experience let me know how likely you think I am to run into any such problems at the moment. I know things are calm at the mo but I haven't a clue if they're likely to escalate as happened before.

  5. I've got no sympathy for this person at all. If you decide against taking up travel insurance when going to a place like Thailand, you deserve whatever happens to you if you have an accident. No sympathy from me.

I'm tempted to say something else but I'll make do with : Sometimes it's better to say nothing.

I fail to see what's wrong with expressing an opinion. Especially an opinion that is 100% valid - I think most people would agree with me in saying that it's not merely an opinion, but fact. Fact: You are stupid if you decide not to get travel insurance when you go overseas. If you decide not to get travel insurance, then you deserve whatever comes your way. If you get crippled, suck it up brother. You're NEVER going to walk again, and that's YOUR fault. Whenever you look at normal people walking around, going about their day, you have yourself to blame when you're in a wheelchair and can't even take a piss without the assistance of another person. In the real world, you have to live by the consequences of your actions. That's life. Life is tough, so get used to it.

This guy thinks he's rich in life but as far as I'm concerned he is a very very poor man with no grasp on the important things in life ie. compassion.

Good luck in America, you'll fit right in

  6. Most of the Thais I used to know were some of the most materialistic people I've ever known.

It all depends on which part of the world you originally came from to reintegrate successfully I suppose.

I was born in Yorkshire which along with having it's fair share of d1ckheads and rainy days, also has some of the nicest people you'd ever meet, beautiful countryside, rare nature.

Obviously returning to the UK is not going to be fun (or cheap:) if you're used to bedding a different hooker each day of the week and sleeping in the sun most of the day.

Keep your head down, laugh at the fools who have taken on mountains of debt just to have that new car every couple of years and a bigger conservatory than next door, live within your means and spend all your money on living.

BUT most importantly remember the minority you think you are in is actually not as small as you think.

  7. He took a risk with a small probability of going bad and paid the ultimate price but what is a life without risk...it's an existence.

I had a motorcycle 'accident' last year which could have easily left me in the same position. I have never been afraid of dying while riding a motorbike, only being injured in this way and being dependant on a relative to give up their life and join my existence.

I wish his mother and family the best and express my condolences for the accident. Maybe a scrap of solace could be gained from the knowledge he was treading into the unknown, exploring, learning, not stagnating in his home town, drinking down the same boozer every day after work...

Those of you who are saying he got what he deserved shame on you. If one of the man's relatives is reading this you have to understand that the underbelly of society (the absolute least sensitive people in the world) are some of the people sitting at Pattaya/Bangkok/Phuket(s) bars and coming on here because they don't and wouldn't if they even could talk to their wives.

  8. Apologies for being a bit of a tool.

    Let's get serious.

The best suggestion I have read is to give her an amount for a few months then for some reason reduce it. See what the reaction is. It sounds like you don't hold her in position of trust to let her have your bank details and by doing what I suggest you are confirming you are the devious one to some extent but I don't see another way. Love is blind and trust has cost lots of people on this site a lot of Baht.

    Good luck

  9. People have been warned since early Feb. 2010 about possible problems and still they came why are they crying foul play now..........?

Nobody exept maybe a fortune teller from Sukhumvit, new in feb. about a coming vulcano eruption in Iceland!

One told me near the big Buddha in Koh Samui 2 years ago :)

If I was there, I'd take a room at On Nut (if I wanted to hang around Bangkok) and be well away from it all, but near enough to town and the airport. I can't believe people have cut it so fine that they can't afford £20 a night for a few days rather than sleep on the floor at the airport.

British famillies believe someone should be held to account over this act of nature, they shouldn't have to pay for food and a room for themselves, that would just be unreasonable. Some will have the money but be unwilling to spend it because they feel they shouldn't have to. Not the majority but believe me this will be the attitude of some.

Can't believe someone earlier still posts a 'Thailand is better than where you are' message even now. There's benefits and disadvantages to being in any one place in the world. I could think of a good reason to visit Baghdad but I'm not as defensive as some feel the need to be.

  10. I thought sleeping and eating patterns in Thailand would prevent something like this happening. It's really hot at the mo isn't it? Can't the army remove that wd40/ub40/whatever the fck it's called energy drink the fisherman farmers from Isaan swig all day from 7-11's, wait 5 mins for em to fall asleep then sweep em away. :D

I'm glad the sides are colour-coded, makes it really easy to choose one :)

  11. I rented a motorbike a couple of years ago in Pattaya, was pulled 2 minutes further down the road (think the cop was probably getting quite well paid from watching the guy doing the rentals) and not stopping the guy from renting them out I should say. Cop pulled me and totted up all sorts of offences, all related to the bike, took me to the cop shop and made me pay.

A week later when songkran started I was sat outside a bar on second road with a bucket or two of ice water, I got a couple of them too, little bit of payback for the corrupt bstards.

Long live songkran, unless you're uptight, in which case living in Thailand is not working for you

  12. Just because a Thai may have spent longer riding a 'motorbike' than a farang doesn't necessarily make them better. Ex gf being a prime example, they learn how not to get killed, not how best to control their vehicle. Nowhere on earth is better than Finland or Sweden for this.

I have a 10 year old nephew I'm pretty sure could ride a twist and go equally as well mainly because you just try to survive, no need to learn any rules, maybe what red light means but that's about it.

I shocked her father one day by riding his 20 year old Yam better than he can, first go. Front brake was snapped, rear brake as effective as foot dragging, broken clutch lever and inconsistent kick start. He was shocked. It wouldn't wheelie though :)

  13. Hope you've all got your international licenses guys.

Only problem I've had was when a pickup reversed over my sports bike in Patt. The guy got out, was 6ft6 (I'm 6,3) built like a tank and was working as a bodyguard in Iraq (looked the part, could have been one of those Pattaya stories tho)...I was still so pleased it wasn't a Thai guy though, I'd have been screwed.

A friend of mine knocked a Thai down and injured them quite badly in Nangrong, while he does regret what happened he said he'd have got off more lightly by murdering someone in the UK.
