Why are the sailors wearing life jackets? They're not even in blue water and they are thinking of sinking already?
If you hit your head when going overboard during getting underway and line handling -six feet or 1000 won't matter. Do you only wear your seat belt on the freeway.?
I served in the RN for 12 years. I never heard of anyone going overboard when getting under way and still within a harbour, and that includes Scapa Flow where it blows a bit most of the time. Maybe that was because we were a professional and almost entirely volunteer Navy and knew what we were doing. 'Nozzers' who put themselves at risk were quickly disavowed of doing so by a Petty Officer or Leading Seaman in no uncertain terms. The only time that life jackets were worn was by the seaboat's crew.and then only when the sea condition warranted it..
I attach my seatbelt in a car before moving off and always have done since they were introduced in the UK in the sixties. Given the moronic behaviour of road users in Thailand I consider it to be totally sensible. What wearing a seatbelt on a motorway has to do with going to sea escapes me. Have you ever been to sea?
Entering and leaving port is a dangerous time for crew members as they have to deal with mooring ropes and wires which can break under strain and send them overboard, probably unconcious or injuried, in these circumstances a lifejacket can be a life saver, you probably do not realise that most Navys now follow this practice.
I am pleased to see Thailand contributing to the NATO effort and wish them well, and yes, a little bit of Thai "common sense" like just drown the b.........ds. rather than European diplomacy may give the pirates something to think about.

I want to buy some ring and open-ended spanners, allen keys, brake and gearbox and differential oil and stuff. Does anyone know of a shop in CM that sells this sort of stuff (like HALFORDS) in the UK does?
Thanks

My Insurance company has told me that if she buys a car before she has passed the test she can get class 3 insurance on her car, if she were to drive my car which has class 1 without a licence she would not be covered.

My gf is taking driving lessons and wants to practice in my car. However as she does not have a driving licence yet if she had a bump or injured somebeody I imagine my insuarnce company woiuld say "we don't want to know", is there such as thing as insurance coiver for provisional drivers (is there such a thign as a provisioanl driving licence even?).
The attitude seems to be just drive slowly evertything will be OK, not in my b.... car matee!

Got my Letter of Residence this week (15/7/2010) and paperwork as described above IS required.
Cost 500bht.
Needed to get two original letters, one for driving licence and another (copies not accepted) to buya car, but still a lot cheaper than the British Consulate.

It seems that the NATIONWIDE SWIFT transfer form does not ask for the account number of the receiving account in Thailand and appears to make the connection using your name and address in Thailand only. This seems a bit odd to me, any advice on this please. Thanks, Dave

I arrive from UK at about 03:00 hrs and fly out for Saigon on AIR ASIA at 07:00 hrs. If I stay in the transit area will I be able to book in for the AIR ASIA flight from there or will I have to go through immigration?
I will only have hand luggage, no checked baggage.
Thanks

When you hand over your passport to the immigration officer at Swampy what is it that they actually check, do they look on their computer for a Thai police record, an international arrest warrant or, non payment of bar fine in Phuket, or ??
They always look so important they must be checking something !!

How do Thais work out what Thai characters to use for a farang name?
For instance, how would my name (DAVID HOWDEN) be written in Thai, and how would that have been arrived at?

which I use.
Enter the BEGINING and END meter readings.
Adjust the GREEN numbers starting at the bottom until CALCULATED is equal to USED.
If the FT changes then it will need updating.
