IMHO Emirates cut the other benefits (ie access to Lounges) to dissuade the regular BC travellers from gaming the system.
Indeed thats why Emirates have changed their policy on upgrades,
Previously upgrades were based on status now however its based on a mixture of status and fare category. Full flex economy ticket and basic blue member has a better chance of an upgrade than Gold members paying
normal saver ticket !

If you were right about July/August being the high season, then airline's would be competing and prices would be reduced. This is not the case because it is the low season in Thailand. I have already given proof.
Craig has also suggested that low season=low demand, and higher airfares.
That i can understand perfectly. I am a World Traveller, and have been backpacking since my 20's and now in my late 40's. I do know what i am talking about.
I have also said that the price hikes are probably a combination of 'seasonality '(like Craig also has), and probably 'school holidays'
Butt am more weighted towards 'seasonality'. Let me explain why, because if you look at flights to Latin American destinations you will see them similarly affected price wise like Thailands. Latin America isn't a 'bring the kids' type of destination like Thailand is, but does have similar weather 'seasons', like Thailand does.
I rest my case!
I really do think you should rest your case on this !
July/August in UK is HIGH SEASON accordingly the airlines know majority of people incl families with children will be flying
For the period July/August the airlines DO NOT have to compete for customers ! See Emirates Y prices in Aug of £800 ex MAN-BKK
July/August might be low season in Thailand but the airlines know because of HIGH SEASON in UK they do NOT have to compete (reduce prices) for July /Aug.

The only routes served with A380 currently are Frankfurt, Osaka, Tokyo, Paris.
A380 to be used on LHR route ex BKK from 1st July.

Flew back to England Thursday with Thai air and the plane must have been about 20% full at the very most, I had 3 seats empty in front and behind me and my 3 to myself, no profit in that flight for sure
Airline revenues are not just from passengers - What about the freight under your feet ?

I hope Russian will choose another place , when you see how they are treated in this forum by some sexpat thinking they are better than anyone else ...and who define themselves as more Thai than Thais , I would rather be friend with a Russian than a narrow minded arrogant Brit or yank who think he is someone in here but in fact is not better than anyone else. Pathetic ....
It never seases to amaze me the way all those Bangkok sexpats constantly slag Pattaya without even setting foot in the place. If Bangkok had the same amount of Russians as Pattaya I'm sure we'd hear a different tune.
Have travelled all over the world for the last 40 years and yes i must agree the russian people i have encountered were terrible however they
come second in the obnoxtious stakes to jews from Israel. They really do think they own the world ! On my travels in Thailand i have encountered
Jewish holidaymakers and i must say they were horrible.

Dont't worry in 2015 on LHR-BKK route average Economy prices with Thai will be within 3 to 7 % of EVA AIR.

One of the daily LHR flights next for the chop and new flight ex MAN ?
I am in two, or perhaps three, minds about this idea.
Using one of the the grounded A340s on BKK-MAN might make a lot of sense, replacing it with a B777 or B787, in time & if they can make a go of it. Should have been done yonks ago !
On the separate issue of BKK-LHR, THAI have been having trouble to fill two daily B744s for some time now, and switching to one daily A380 might make it more profitable, alternatively they can try to boost load-factors on two flights ?
Selling-off one set of LHR landing/take-off slots would certainly raise some welcome capital, when loans are due for refinancing, and help their cashflow !
But how would their Star-Alliance partners view it, reducing TG's presence at a key global/European hub, just after their new Terminal-2 has reopened ?
I can see Thai cancelling one of their daily LHR flights and selling the valuable landing slot for millions of £. Cannot see a direct service
MAN-BKK with a A340 - yes perhaps with a B787.
Problem with any possible direct services eastbound from Manchester are the 3 MEA who have really dominated these routes over the last
10 years. Will be interesting to see how long the re-introduced Cathay Pacific direct route to Hong Kong lasts!
THAI might open the route, using one of the planes currently sitting idle, but then switch to a B787 later on, as they become available & if the route is viable ?
I agree that the Gulf-based airlines have changed the game, for many long-haul routes out of the UK, any competitor has to be able to compete on price & service.
Operating an A340 direct Man-BKK at similiar ticket prices as the 3 MEA is a recipe for disaster.

These low fares are surprising because the departure tax rates have increased by huge amounts over the years.
The last time I got a flight from the UK to Thailand for around £500 or less was something like 18 or 19 years ago and £500 back then was worth a lot more than £500 is today. That long ago you could only really get this kind of price on airlines like Aeroflot which were very cheap at the time.
Why do you consider the low fares from the UK to Thailand surprising. Thailand is known as a leisure route resulting in majority of punters looking
for the cheapest price. The 3 MEA have all contributed to the present market especially when you see the number of daily flights they have from their hubs :-
EK - Presently 5 inceasing shortly to 6 a day
EY - 3 per day
QR- 4 per day
Just look at the Europe/Australia market and see how the 3 MEA have changed the previous arrangement between BA/QF - Same is happening
with Thailand. All the European national carriers are struggling on the Europe-Thailand market incl Thai.

Well, it seems it is working and the prices have gone down A LOT.
I just reserved through edreams.es the flights for my family who are coming to attend to my wedding next month. The round trip from Madrid to Bangkok days 5 and 19 Aug cost me 875€ per passenger which is ridiculously low for a direct flight and something like 3x less than it cost before.
Nice.
Edreams - cheap Thai tickets in August - Could be to good to be true ?
My thought too.
I've had problems myself, with this particular company, they took the money on my credit-card and failed to issue the ticket, then a demand for an extra GBP90 arrived, blaming the airlines involved. And yet they still showed the lower fare as being available, on Skyscanner. alt=blink.png> So now I warn my friends, about them, just in case this wasn't an isolated error on their part.
My own fault, I ought not to have been so trusting, in Skyscanner's vetting of people they recommend, and should rather have booked direct with the airline's website, at a slightly-higher price.
I do hope Urloc doesn't have a similar problem. It's often a good idea, to google the agent's name & "problems", before using someone new.
I have used edreams a few times and their customer support really blows, but the tickets are cheaper than with the airline. In this case 300€ difference per ticket, which is quite a lot considering there are 6 passengers.
I searched again now and the prices have gone higher, but they issued my tickets already. I mostly pay with paypal.
Would strongly suggest checking if the Airline has your booking by going to checkmytrip.com. Enter your PNR number (issued in your E-Ticket by Edreams) and see if Thai Airways has your confirmed flights ?
Edreams have a habit of taking your money - providing an e-ticket then sometimes a week before your flight you get an email from Edreams saying the return flight is full however for another 200/300 euros per ticket they can get you an alternative return flight !

Long Haul =Low Cost does not work ! If it did you would expect one of the most profitable airlines in the world to offer such a service (Ryanair)
Oasis Airlines = HKG/GTW and Air Asia X KUL/STN both could not make it work. The high costs involved are not part of the low cost model.
If Air Asia X attempt to start again from Kuala Lumpur to Gatwick or Stansted you can bet the likes of Emirates/Qatar/Etihad would soon put an end to it by reducing their prices.

Qatar Airways’ 787 Dreamliner returns to London Heathrow route17-May-2013 1© CAPAQatar Airways resumed (16-May-2013) Boeing 787 service between Doha and London Heathrow following the aircraft grounding in Jan-2013. Qatar was the first to launch 787 services to the UK and the return to service means it remains the only airline in the world to operate scheduled 787 services to/from the UK. The first of the carrier’s five 787 returned to service on the Doha-Dubai route on 01-May-2013. The carrier will be gradually phasing in 787 services over the next few weeks on long-haul routes such as Munich, Frankfurt and Zurich. [more - original PR]UA is resuming direct, non-stop service for DEN-NRT with the 787 on 10 June.
QR used 787 yesterday and today on Manchester/Doha route. This is a prelude to a daily 787 service Manchester-Doha replacing
the A330-200.

Here is an article from todays Business Traveller :-
19/03/2013From March 31, Thai Airways will be operating its revamped B747-400 with new economy, business and first class seats between London Heathrow and Bangkok.
The jumbo jet will be replacing Thai’s A340-600, which is configured
with eight fully flat first class seats, 60 angled lie-flat, 167 degree,
business class seats and 199 economy seats in a 2-4-2 configuration. The enhanced 374-seat B747 features 325 economy class seats in a
ten-across 3-4-3 layout, with 30 degrees of recline, 32-34 inches of
legroom, 16.3-17.5 inches of width and 10.6-inch, audio-video on-demand,
seat-back screens. The old economy seat on this aircraft did not offer
individual seat-back screens. The 40-person Royal Silk business class cabin will be arranged 2-2
(26 on the upper deck and 14 on the lower) with 167-degree angled-lie
flat shell seats with a 60 to 62-inch pitch, 20-inch width and 15.4-inch
in-flight entertainment screen. The nine Royal first class seats will be fully flat (180-degree
recline) with 79-80 inches of legroom, 21 inches of width and 23-inch
screens. The product was designed by Priestmangoode and has been built
to create a sense of privacy, with sliding screens that separate the
seat from the aisle. Each “suite” sits alone, except for E and F in row
three, which are a pair.“The arrival of the B747 is just another stage in Thai’s massive
long-term investment – 49 new and retrofitted aircraft have been
introduced in the fleet between 2010 and 2013,” says a spokesman for the
airline. The twice-daily service sees London flights
depart at 1230, arriving in Bangkok at 0605 the following day, and at
2130, arriving in Bangkok 1505 the following day. The return flights
leave Bangkok at 0015, arriving in London at 0620 the same day, and at
1330, arriving in London 1935 the same day. Flight time between the two
cities is about 11 hours and 35 minutes. -
What is the chanse of a cattle class flyer to clock up 150 000 miles.
I'm flying BKK-DXB-Rio 28days in 28 out every month year in year out and
don't even manage 100 000 miles per year
As you say in 'economy' you have no chance to manage 150,000 PA
but in Business/First Class then you have a chance !

Etihad cancelling all flights
in Thailand Travel Forum

Etihad Airways said on Monday it will temporarily suspend all flights to, from, and via Abu Dhabi from the end of Wednesday.
The decision follows an earlier announcement from the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority, and the General Civil Aviation Authority to suspend all inbound, outbound, and transit passenger flights in the UAE.
This suspension has been made to limit the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus and to protect citizens, residents, and international travellers, Etihad said in a statement.
