  1. Hi there,

Just about to start our first UK settlement application and would like a couple of things clarifyed. First I've read that I would have to include my origional birth certificates, and I've also read that copies will do. Which do people suggest? I really don't feel overly confident sending origional documents, by post or courier.

Second, while I was living in Thailand I think all our bills were in my wifes name, so apart from my visas it's going to be quite difficult to prove we were together, any suggestions. As for photos, in the 8 years we were living together I think we have about six or seven photos of us together, lot's of her and very few of me (just don't like having my photo taken) what other evidence do people on this forum think would be acceptable.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  2. BBQ rat is like a mild tasting rabbit, white, fat free meat. Only eat field rats though, they live on a diet of rice and fruit and are very delicious. Wouldn't curry them though, ruins the flavour. A little nam jim, not to spicy, and some sticky rice :o:D

  3. I'm on my day one of stopping now, another 4 hrs will make it a day.

It's bloody hard, but a friend of mine who stopped, and craved after a day or so came up with a great trick.

Get a small lidded jar, jam jar or the like. Put the contents of an ash-tray inside and fill with water. Keep in your pocket, or the place you like to smoke the most. Everytime you want a smoke, remove the lid and inhale deply, if that doesn't help, take a swig.

    You will stop!!

    We will see.

by the way, has anyone else noticed that it gets really hard to type when you haven't had a ciggie for a while??

  4. I smoked 1 to 2 packs of cigarettes a day for over 25 years. When I finally had enough of it I set a date one month in the future. I continued to smoke as usual until that day arrived (January 1, 2000). I then threw away the cigarettes and have never smoked another one since. That was 9 years 3 months and 3 days ago. One of the best things I have ever done.

I noticed you know exactlley how many days you've stopped, but only a rough guestimate to how long you'd smoked. "Not smoking doesn't make you live longer. It only seems that way"

Don't give me to much sh*t!! First day in 28 years without a cigarette.

Gum's great, but makes the beer taste like dogs piss, also noticed not smoking affects your spelling!!

  5. girlx, have you still not made in to Club Culture yet?

... and it only around the corner from ya.

no one will go with me! and i don't like going to clubs by myself! :o getting people to try new things is like pulling teeth here.

Like going to clubs on your own.

Sorry but if I go to a club and feel the need to lie down, then I know it's time to go home.

  6. In Thailand? A pet rat? You'll have the neighbours up in arms if you live in an apt. or condo. I have no quarrel with the varmints just that they are inappropriate here considering the nature of domestic staff (and or thai partner). Aside from the emo/goth segment they'll think you're mad.

But very tasty curried so I've been told.

I've been a fancy rat fan for years. Had a few back home, love the hooded. Unfortunatley in Thailand rats are considered as food or vermin, depending on where they're from.

That and the fact that you just can't get fancy rats here, everything else yes, wild rabid sewer rats bigger than your average dog, yes. Fat, white and cute, yes people will think your a little strange.

Forgot to add, BBQ rat tastes really good!!

  7. If you're afraid that somebody could poison your dog, here is a good trick to teach him not to accept food from a stranger; ask one of your neighbor or friend (must be somebody that your dog doesn't know and/or never seen) to come to your house gate and trow a piece of chicken previously rubbed with some pounded chilli bird at your dog and repeat it two or three days in a row, I assure you that he will never accept food from other peoples anymore.

    Good idea!!

Bangkeaws' are excellent guard dogs, probably one of the best.

But I wouldn't try to keep one as a family pet, not so much for any fear as to what they would do to a member of the family, but visitors beware. If a member of your family visit that the dog isn't familiar with then all hel_l could break loose.

Friend of mine had one, I've been a regular (2-3 times a week) visitor to his house, and thought I was accepted by his Bangkeaw. We were always careful, due to the rep. of these dogs. Was there for the birth of his son, and played with the boy every time I went round. No probs from the dog. One day the boy fell off his bike, (see where this is going yet). Keep in mind I've played with this kid since he was born, 2yrs old and falls of his bike what ya gonna do?? Yep, I bent over to pick him up, crying boy!! Got some lovely scars now, one on the inside of my right wrist, just missed the tendons, one on my forehead, missed the brain by miles and a great dig into the palm of my right hand.

Like I said, great guard dogs, but should be treated like a real working dog. When not working keep them caged, restrained or muzzled. Or, as far as I'm concerned all three!!

  8. "...500+ score from IELTS..."

    That would be amazing.

    TOEFL, not so much.

I could be wrong about that, just going on the score required by Thai MOE for non-native English teachers. Figured if they want that high then a Uk uni will want similar if not higher. Check the OU website, they'll have more details.

  9. I would have thought the employer in the UK would do the check on her behalf, it would not hurt to get her own CRB check done whilst in her host country.

And i did read the question you asked.

    Good luck.

As stated earlier, the education system and employers in the UK will only check the UK data base, if you come from abroad you need to supply one from your country of origin,(checked this already with various teaching agencies) which is why I'm asking if this needs to be verified by the Embassy? We are on a tight budget so I don't want to waste resources on taxis, time and extortionate embassy prices.

Sorry never stated the fact that she has never been to the UK so a CRB check from her host country will be as useful as a fart in a space suit.

Come on, your the specialist, you should know if anyone does.

  10. Oh, and rule #2.

Never rely on advice from a Thai with regards to how dangerous a snake is. I find it amazing that they aren't aware of the dangerous animals they share their country with.

    Oh so true.

My mother-in-law and wife freaked out when I picked up a whip snake (insectivore, none venemos) but a couple of weeks later I found a green tree viper in the kitchen, was trying to decide what to do with it when the M-I-L just picked it up and threw it over the garden wall. When I asked why she was scared of the whip snake and not the viper she said, "if the farlang wasn't scared of the first one (which is also green) why should she be scared of the this green one." :D:o

  11. Depends on where in Thailand you plan to live. If your a country boy like me and end up in BKK your gonna get bored or divorced real quick. If your a city boy and end up in the country?? Jimknights idea is a good un, a bicycle and a little spirit of adventure goes a long way to filling the time, fishing if that's your thing, although I hate those bloody square ponds, NO skill required. Hikings OK but just not really that safe to camp unless you get a friendly farmer to sort you something out, and if your out of your own area you could end up being the local tourist attraction until you move on!! Sometimes fun mostly a pain. Or like most people you'll find here, posting on Thai Visa 555

  12. Criminal record check for what exactly ??

UK visa applications do not require a criminal record check to enter the country perhaps you should read the guidance. As for a criminal record check some jobs in the UK do a full background check should you be successful at the interview.

    Good luck

OK. Start by reading the question again!

I know visa applications do not require a CRB, BUT, any job in the education sector in the UK does require a full disclosure incliding a CRB check. The CRB check is done after the interview using UK agancies only, being a Thai citizen, who has never left Thailand it is up to my misses to provide her own CRB from her country of origin. RE question. Does this need to be verified by the British Emabassy?

  13. Just a quickie,

I'm going back to the UK soon and the wife will be following hopefully not long after. She has a Masters in Education and would like to get a job in that field in the UK. I understand that she will need a criminal record check here and all other documents translated into English. Will these need to be verified by the embassy (especially thr CRB and degree) or will they be acceptable as they are?

    Cheers in advance.
