I dont use M$ ViruS but remember there being issues with SGD. Of course there is nothing wrong with several boot
discs in ya arsenal. I have several, and use any of them - prefer a distro as it always picks up all the O/S and its
easy to chainload all of them.

Hardly - its more commonly known as choice where I come from - remember Boston.

Dont try to reinvent the wheel! -
Love the handle & location ya have out there - beware of orange gin - I got hammered for 3 days on that jungle juice
in a jungle on the east coast of Africa once. Enjoy....

Yes Sir - as agreed, it aint rocket science, and for the most part a simple Linux mini distro would do all the
ISP, Mail, Docs, etc that 90% of the folks out there need/use. I recently converted an entire IC to Linux,
as M$ was starting to harass the owner about sales of M$ Virus - I advised him to do it sooner rather than later.
He did 3 machines per evening and nobody missed a beat. A browser is a browser. No AV.

BTW The M$ rep was totally flabbergasted ... even brought his regional bossman by.

He must have graduated from the same school as the SA clown who advocated beetroot & garlic to stop HIV/AIDS

He recommended people drink coconut water, which is alkaline, and therefore could be used as a herbal medicine for the prevention of pandemic A(H1N1), along with orange, lemon and pomelo which, despite containing citric acid, were very rich in potassium and therefore, would not disturb the body's immunity. -
OK

My OP was about free download programs - please back to topic. -
M$ continues to shoot itself in the foot.
Wait till this sucker is a month old - right after the 1st BSD - it will be a bigger pig than M$ Viru$ - I will put money on it.

To root or not to root - that is indeed like great sex. Wanna live on the wild side and go bareback? Be my guest.
A very loaded question - all the spooks will be out, armed with their respective Linux & M$ Vader weapons.
My theory has always been 'if ya need that much protection, ya doing it all wrong'
Remember that both of these occupations were purist - clean, good fun, before the wonks came along.
Perhaps we simply need to clean up our act. Of course, the wonks will have us believe that all the Viruses are of
our own making and need all this freaky protection. A bunch of snakeoil salesmen, at best.
I have not had a virus in 10 years - maybe longer. I have never crashed any machine, except deliberately.
The same goes with everything else I do. Maybe its just a little discipline every once in a while.
As to you Q&A - live on the wild side, baby. Go big or go home. Root. We are not kids. Paid retail at the door.

All those 'driver updates' might be the root casue of all ya problems - it does tend to be a M$ mantra - because
of all the Tuesday, etc patches. Leave well enough alone if it works. By the sound of it, y'all have a bunch of
different, bad problems - I would do a fresh install & leave it alone, once ya harden the system.

We have a quaint expression in LA - "How do you get over someone? Get under someone new"
Stop being such a whinging, whining weenie - thats why she dumped you.

I have used a plastic tray - the serving type - that way ya can place cushions under it - make sure the NB can breathe
properly at all times - I also put non-skid on it.

Aha - we have traction here - good man.
If ya follow my lead - always secure ya data on a F32 partition first, the world is ya oyster.
3 or 5 different, wonderful O/S. Remember, the moment we stop learning, we die.
Use HDD, thats its function, for everything - dont complicate ya life with flash. It will let ya down.
BR>Jack
PS Move data to flash, use any Linux live distro and zap the entire HDD - there is a copy of GParted on most.
Have fun - thats critical-mass.

Use Safari obviously.

There is no need to quit anything - simply multiboot.
I have been doing this for a coon's age and relish in learning new stuff every time I boot.
Admittedly I have my favorites - lets not start a roasting session - and love the freedom and learning curves
Unfortunately - as I remarked previously - your first choice is - in my humble opinion - not the easiest.
Once you have setup XP and suitably bored, give on of the smaller, simpler distros a whirl.
If ya follow approx my scenario, a fresh, new install is only 10 minutes away.
See ya out on the Prairie.

TG is simply a step up from BG - the day job feeds the nite job, ya get to do more guys per nite and make more.
I would stop being a wimp and step up to the plate and give her at least 60k per month, pay the rent & utilities,
then buy her a real neato BMW or Porsche Boxster - used is good - you can save the new one for when you build
the big house for her mom & pop also.
Then you will be too tired for boomsing, working 6 jobs, and your buddies who come to visit for free, can do her.

Why dont you trolls pick a decent, exciting topic?? Its always the same junk

What about a new King Power Duty Free Mall?

Given that we hardly understand the virus, have no cure for it, this sounds like a bassackwards approach to
exacerbating a very serious unknown, with no absolutes, even less controls & known references.
By the time they are done with this thing, it will be a monster - these are not doctors - we are being played.
Ya wont get me anywhere near these turkeys. Stay fit, eat healthy live foods, hit the vitamins, good luck, people

jackdanielsesq: Seagate does not offer recovery services for free. Since my drive is still under warranty, they are willing to give me a free replacement drive. But for recovering the data for the kind of problem my drive has, they will charge thousands of dollars.

I would suggest its XP - M$ does this kind of thing all the time.
Try a mini Linux version and see if it goes away.
I would dual boot, no virtual XP nonsense.
