  1. Salsa Kitchen is not very convenient for me in the new location, but I have always enjoyed it and the owner really is a swell guy. I got a chance to eat there the other day and tried their new burrito. It was good and so big that I could not finish it.

Their ribs were excellent in the past, but for some reason they changed the recipe. The good news is that they now carry both kinds and I hear that the "classic" ribs are as good as ever.

    Yes, well said.

After an unpleasant experience at Miguels (on the moat) I discovered Salsa Kitchen some time ago and have had several very nice meals there.

  2. Back on topic....

I have used a great salon on 2nd floor of Airport Plaza (flyover end) - I think it is called Hair Station. For a wash, cut, wash again and dry I am happy to pay 250 - 300 baht.

Otherwise, tgf cuts my hair and she is also excellent.

I had a "Gents trim" in a UK salon recently, absoulte crap by comparison. £10 (500 baht) for 10 minutes and surly, scruffy staff.

    Don't complain about Thailand!

  3. I'm 67, been here 7 years. No breathing problems. Walk and swim every day. This is the worst pollution I've ever seen. Dry throat and eyes. One km visibility.

Thanks, PB. I temporarily bailed out of CM last week (as did my neighbour to the US). Sure, parts of Europe and US have had a long and cold winter, but this morning I took a grateful dog for a walk through the woods and over fields in lovely spring sunshine and enjoyed deep lungfulls of clean, cool air. Suffolk, UK.

The only thing, in an otherwise crystal clear sky, was a sole USAF transport plane lumbering into the RAF/USAF base at Lakenheath.

    Take care all.

  4. Many folks who live in HS4 and that area will not be happy if I say anything that exposes the weakness of the market in that area.

    Hi Tim

Oh, I am sure the poor folks at HS4 and environs would forgive your comments if you:

A: Provided some evidence to support your claim of "the weakness of the market in that area", and

B: told them where you live, so they would know what they should be aspiring to

    Thanks

    Mark

  5. You can get a print out of your calls made from Rebtel and Skype i believe also have this option to print out the history.

thanks for reply. if i made my own printout, would the visa people except that?? ( or can skype send you a printout on offical skype headed paper? ) - anyone know pls

On previous, succesful, visa applications the ECO has accepted Skype printouts. You can either export SMS and phone call list via the application itself and there are also some free utilities available on line.

    Good luck

  6. Apologies if this is covered somewhere, but could not find it on TV or VFS website.....

Last year g/f's tourist visa application was rejected.

She is now going to apply again, with reasons for the first rejection addressed and rectified.

She lives in my condo in Chiang Mai. Does she need to attend VFS, Bangkok in person again to hand it in? She did all the biometric stuff last time.

    Thanks

  7. What actual temperatures are you getting in Chiang Mai at the moment? BBC says around 36C. What does your thermometer say?

At 1430 hrs local, thermometer on my shady balcony (downtown) reads 34C - but it feels hotter.

Sorry to hear about the guy who died. RIP.

  8. So MHS couldn't be done there and back in a day gary? That's a shame. How about Chiang Rai? Is the road ok?

I regularly make the journey from CM to CR to CM and have done so by air, bus and private car.

My preferred method now is the VIP service from The Green Bus Company (263 baht one way). This gives a very comfortable and bookable seat on a newish coach and drivers are good. The new bus station at Chiang Rai is a little out of town centre, but transport links are easy.

The road has been greatly improved in parts over the last few years. Journey time (yesterday) CR to CM was 2 hours 45 minutes.

  9. I have tried these "Faranger banger" sausages and thought they were quite good. Personally I like a rougher texture and more spice, but others who tried them with me complimented them for the lack of zing.

  10. Probably shuld be walking roundsince i be 1 day early in reaching CM than my customers

If you do find a short hire of a decent car at something like 700-900 baht a day then please post here with details.

Personally, I think you need to revise your expectations.

  11. For your information, rather than help ; I just returned a Honda Jazz -nice new car-to POP Car Rental just South of Thapae Gate paying a "discounted price" of 1,200 a day.If you can find a Honda Jazz for your price I'm sure a lot of people would like to know about it, including me. You rule out POP and North Wheels- the two most popular places. Thee are others ,as has been said, round Thappae Gate area. Please post your eventual choice. And do try to remember the name and address of the Company.Nothing worse than retailing what a bargain you found but just can't recall where it was.

I think the above is in response to the post made by <sunnyhor>.

  12. If you are looking for sympathy you will find it in the dictionary between shit and syphilis :)

Perhaps the OP was looking for a slightly more useful response. IMHO. :D

Have used Buddy in the past and found them ok. Sad if they have changed - they were also helpful to someone I know and were recommended to me.

    Regards

  13. Do not book online because you can never negotiate the rate. As my experience, I did rent a Honda Jazz for 700 baht for 5 days in Chiangmai but unfortunately I did not keep the receipt. I went around to search somewhere in Tapae area. Well, advise to you, walk around or call them to speak to them. I'm sure you will get that amount. 1300 baht is way too expensive to rent it. Good luck hope this help!!!!

I have rented from a few outlets in CM and 1,300 baht a day (for 1-2 days) appears to be the norm, although this can increase in holiday times.

Budget (next to Airport Plaza) are ok, as are Ruby (053-115801) but the cheapest car I got was from a firm (Joy?) near Thapae Gate for 1000 baht a day - but it appeared to be an ex- cop car and was not good.

    Good luck

  14. Took an international flight from CNX last week.

No Thai business lounge access after immigration/security. Upon check-in, passengers are given a voucher for a non-alcholic drink and a bun at Black Canyon Coffee.

    Poor.

  15. People may read, but do they not comprehend????

"or it could be some foul play by the wife." Might this not be considered as accusing?

It was posted in the original post as a man from "Glasgow", could that not be mistaken for where he was from

This forum has gotten so filled with members so quick to get their negative comments posted just to see their name in lights, that it is past bordering on rude. A guy is dead. Maybe the guys wife is sad, maybe she is happy, but why throw stones when one really knows nothing.... The point is a guy is dead and some family, somewhere, is saddened.

And that goes not only for this thread.... but throughout the whole of the internet. Hiding behind a nic emboldens normally nice people to become real jerks with their comments. Something they would never think of doing in a face to face conversation with the talked about person.

and yea, I'm probably guilty of it too. In a couple years we will hear about the new mental personality disease this is causing

    Just my opinion

Not sure I understand all that you say, or what you admit to be guilty of.

However, if this thread is to continue, let's keep on topic and perhaps agree that this tragic case is worthy of more than a "discussion" here.

I agree with some of your comments in respect of posts in general.

    RIP to the deceased.

  16. I knew the people involved. I believe the version here is a serious distortion of what actually happened and that such second hand and, I think, baseless gossip is not helpful to anyone and potentially very hurtful to those involved. If you don't know more than such unsubstantiated rumours why post it? I'm not going to go into what happened because this is not the place for such but I will say that comments such as those by Loaded are inaccurate.

Thanks for posting that. You are right to call a halt to individual speculation.

Loaded's comments were a generalisaton though if you read his post again so I think he can not be criticised for stating what actually does happen here sometimes. Certainly you can not say he is inaccurate

Cutting out the last part of your last sentence and you made a valuable and correct point.

    caf

    I agree.

This thread has started on rumour and speculation, although there is no direct accusation as Kevin H suggests.

I think, given the sad circumstances, this is best closed/suspended unless something a little more factual can be said; even then it may not be appropriate.

    IMHO

  17. That is EXCELLENT news! Thanks for keeping us informed. It's always nice to hear of a happy ending. Too many bikes just disappear forever.

Indeed. Would be interested to know what happens to the thief....

  18. The best bar area in chiangmai is out towards San sai behind Carefour a rapidly growing area and has a real cosmopolitan feel. Multicultural. Great entertainment very relaxed and cheap prices. Has far more going for it than the inner city area. If you have an affiliation with the red lion place you should suggest that they expand out that way but hey they will have to conform to the friendly enviroment to succeed.

Yes, gf works in this area and it is certainly buzzing. I still like Nimmanhamein area though.

  19. A busy day for the Mods. As I stated earlier "It doesn't bother me that customers complain." ... "I would rather these incidents didn't occur, but if they do I'd like to know about it in order to rectify the problem.".

I don't get flustered easily, so it's interesting to see so many people doing so on my behalf. A word of advice, if I may....

    "Calm down, calm down." :)

Indeed, "Calm down, calm down." :D

Of course <Wolfie> is entitled to his opinion, and it appears to be accepted that having made his post, another mod should do the moderating on this thread.

Everyday most of us accept waiting times in LOS that we would not put up with in the West, but maybe some people take the view that a farang-run establishment, aimed mostly at a farang clientele, deserves a little less patience sometimes? Having said that, I used to be friendly with a farang bar owner (not in CM) who used to pull his hair out as to the drop in the performance of his staff as soon as he was away from his place. It is not easy, I'm sure.

I think maybe <Wolfie> was rather more upset with the comments made in his earshot, rather than the wait. But, in any event, well done to Kevin for taking it on the chin and keeping cheerful - and I trust he will speak with the member of staff concerned.

Bit of a storm in a teacup?

    Regards

  20. i guess when they figure they can do a patch job on wrecked vehicals that should be crushed and repaint them to look new its ok

the sooner the govt implements 6 monthly/annual vehical safety inspections the better

A quick word or two in favour of the standards of the grey/green CM-CR bus company.

I use that road every day. Firstly I have never seen one 'crabbing' due to bad wheel/axle alignement or whatever, though some would fail emissions tests.

I have never seen any of their drivers behaving badly.

I was a witness to the accident at km 9 some 18 months ago when one of these buses, doing a reasonable speed northwards, swerved right to avoid a motorcycle moron who just drove out in front of him. The bus went up on 2 wheels and ended on its side just off the south bound carriageway.

Passengers were shaken but not stirred, but tragically 2 men in a south bound pick up were killed and 3 or 4 other road users injured.

The culprit was slightly injured, arrested, and died in jail awaiting trial. I bet he didn't get much medical treatment. Local gossip says he was an illegal immigrant from Burma.

Have used the Green Bus Company VIP service between CM and CR many times, most recently last weekend. I have always found the drivers to be pretty good and the vehicles have felt ok to me.

Not sure if the OP is referring to one particular vehicle - he does not say where he gets his information from about the repairs and maintenance.
