  1. Thanks for the replies guys. Much appreciated.

So it looks like the tourist visas are my best bet for now.....

So am I right in saying that I could apply for a 2 month tourist visa in Laos and then get this extended by 1 month at immigration office in Thailand?

Is there such a thing as an Education Visa for short term? i.e. if I was to enroll in a Thai class for a few months in Bangkok before I headed to CM for the year?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Hi

I am hoping some “experts” can help out an “oldie” (opposite of a newbie, not too sure what correct lingo is…. ).

I’ve been living in Thailand for 15 years and want to know the best “visa” to get based on my personal circumstances.

I spent my first 6 years on a Non Immigrant B working for a multinational company in Bangkok.

Then I took early retirement and stayed in Thailand as I was married to a Thai girl – so I think the technical term is not a visa but an extension of stay. I had to show 400k, marriage cert etc and got a years “extension of stay” with 90 days check in.

Last year, I went back to work as an English teacher so got a new Non Immigrant B visa and work permit.

Also, last year my divorce was finalized. Yes, it has been an eventful year.

But I’ve decided that I do NOT want to continue teaching (really tough job for very poor pay and I don’t want to bang my head against a wall for another year) but I DO want to stay in Thailand.

I plan to study Thai full time in CMU from next November (and get a student visa).

But I am not sure what the best option for me is between 1st May and 31st October.

    I am 45 years old.

    I’m from Ireland.

I am thinking the following options are relevant to me:

    1. Leave Thailand every 30 days and just get a VOA (visa on arrival).
    2. Get a 2 month tourist visa in neighbouring country (Laos) and extend it in Thailand by 1 month, thereby getting a 3 month stay. Repeat as required.
    1. Fly home and try to get a 1 year visa – but not sure what type of visa this should be?
    2. Any other better ideas?

I know that when I’m over 50 things become easier with retirement visa (but I’ve no intention of marrying a Thai girl again!!!).

Any help or advice would be appreciated – thanks.

  3. Hi

I own a condo unit south of Bangkok.

A few years back, someone bought the land adjacent to our condo building ( repossessed land from a Finance Company).

It was landlocked and the only access to the land is through our condo land.

They have brought a law suit for right of way access against the condominium co-owners who have voted to refuse the right of way.

What's the Thai Law like in these cases?

I've read conflicting views but I am more interested in the Thai Law and example cases.

I hope someone can provide some useful information.

    Thanks in advance.

  4. Just an update on trying to fix these issues.

I tried the OTA update setting on the TV (Over The Air - i presume). However, each time I try it, it just says failed download.

The channels seem to have changed yesterday as it automatically did a new search itself.

So I went to the local CTH office to see if there was anything they could do to help..... change the alignment of the dish, do a box upgrade etc etc

Their advice - buy a GMM Z HD box instead! <deleted>?! I don't want another box - I want to fix this one LOL.

They just weren't listening..... only 140 baht per month for the GMM box..... blah, blah, blah..... so I had time to spare so I teased it out a little further.... at first, everything was no problem and everything would work - and just 140 baht - no extras.....

But with my few questions I blew that crap out of the water....

It would actually cost 449 baht per month, I would have to buy the box for 1300 baht and I would have to pay 300 baht for the realignment of the satellite. OK - still not too bad.... but what guarantee is there that I won't have same problem with the GMM box (slow to change channels, no EPG information, crappy interference on Sky News and recently on Stadium 6)......?

No problem - everything work ok...... well, show me!....Show me ONE BOX working..... Mai mi.....but have Vietnamese channels :-)

<deleted>? I don't want Vietnamese channels...... LOL..... at this stage, I'm already laughing quite loud at their pathetic sales attempts......

I took away some light reading......but still have the same CTH issues... not sure if I want to go down the GMM route now......

Oh, and as a parting shot, they mentioned that cable is better than satellite..... but when I installed CTH one year ago I originally went for cable but it was absolutely awful - unwatchable..... so switched to satellite.... now they're telling me to get cable..... <deleted>.... I was waiting for them to tell me to stand on my left leg while holding the satellite in my right hand facing west and gently waving it in a circular motion to get a better reception...... nothing would have surprised me.... but i'm still smiling (maybe I'm turning native!!)

  5. I've had similar problems in Bangkok and now while living in the sticks.

I've tried all sorts.... Even bought one of those whistles that is supposed to annoy them....

The only thing that works for me is to be aggressive back.... If they start howling, barking and carrying on, I just go slightly berserk, throw out some expletives and generally look like a raging maniac.....

They stop their carrying on but internally in their own little dog world they are probably saying "clazy falang, Wuf".... I know it's what the locals say.

Also, as I spend more time in nakon nowhere I know curse in Thai so they definitely get the message..... Don't mess with the mad falang.

But best advice above was to be happy!

    Enjoy your ride...

And hope the bike ride goes well too.

  6. I'm guessing Faldo will never play a part in the Ryder Cup again save spouting fecal matter for depressed US TV stations.

Haven't seen his most recent comments but what he said about Garcia was offside!

I was watching the build up a few days before the Ryder Coup and listened to Faldo talking about Monty in a very unfavourable light. Faldo is an individual who knows nothing about a team. He was an awful captain and an awful person.... But was a great golfer.

  7. Thanks for nothing coup for cutting into the LIVE Ryder Cup action at 6pm tonight to have "news" about how to be good citizens!

    Un-(deleted)-believable!

Most places it's "don't worry, be happy"..... Here it's " be happy, or else "!

Ps I'll be happier if I can watch the golf uninterrupted and if Europe beat the septics!

  8. Would advise all not to get between an australian man and television screen this saturday afternoon. The final match of aussie rules football, a minor sport except in OZ, will be shown.

UN Irish Pub are showing it

    Aussie Rules Grand Final

    Sat 10:00pm Sydney v Hawthorn

The only channel showing the AFL grand final in Thailand is Australian Network. It is being shown at 10AM to 3PM.

Unless the general feels like spreading some more happiness around!
  9. This solution requires that you maintain the email contacts in a GMail account. Otherwise, I think it does what you want it to do -- Your Contacts Can Update your Google Address Book.

EDIT: Just realized looking at the screenshots on the how-to page that the email address field may not be editable.

Thanks. It could work nice to keep info up to date once I get all emails correct. I can edit the script to add email2, email3 etc.

But to start off really need an online site or Web form that owners can update themselves. Mailchimp looks like a good option.

    Thanks for all suggestions.

  10. I also have the satellite dish, and the same gripes, tho' I do manage to watch 99.9% of the EPL in glorious HD, so I'm not complaining...Also, I haven't received this season's bill ...yet. I can do with the slow channel change etc because I pay for Channel 188 Sky News and Channel 61...12K Baht for 2 channels? Yes, I know I'm a mug, but love the footie, love the picture quality.

Lol. Exactly like me. I just use the pr button to flick through both channels.
  11. I had the same problem about the remote control, cth sent tech guys and they did update on the box and now no delay on the remote . update is very simple that you can to it your self too. i can not remember the exact steps but it was done from the box .

Thanks for information. I tried the OTA upgrade but it fails every time.

After they fixed the remote time delay did you get TV schedule via EPG too?

Unfortunately not. I only got the remote control fixed. program guide is still not working. But at least i am happy with the remote. i can tell you the delay before was making me want to throw the whole thing off the window. i suggest call them and let them send tech guys. i called in the morning and they came same day with in couple hours.

Cheers for update. I'll call into them later... I'm out in the sticks!

  12. Thanks for suggestions. I'll check them out. But looking for something that will maintain email and postal addresses. Some docs must be posted. We've tried Facebook, Line and Addresstalk.com for better communication but they didn't work....

I know email is old school but it's still the best way to communicate more officially. But need the addresses kept up to date.

  13. great idea best of luck with that one from my experience it will take an idea like that to come from a THAI for any chance of being introduced as a good system they dont like being UPSTAGED

I hear ya.... I've got that covered. But now I need some technical solution. I've done the usual googling but was hoping someone had a recommendation.

  14. Hi

I've got a condo in Cha-am for the last few years but communication from committee and management has been awful, to say the least.

Mostly it's their lack of interest but also all the email addresses and postal addresses are way out of date.

We have an AGM soon and I want to suggest using an online email distribution list.

One where all owners can maintain their own contact details.

Then when management or committee want to communicate with co-owners they always have the most up-to-date contact details.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

    Thanks in advance

    Ger
