  1. If the exit polls are correct this is such a resounding rejection of the Democrats polices over the last two years.

From how they came to power, to the handling and subsequent investigation of last years red shirt rally to their subsequent election campaign.

The only choice people really had was between the Democrats and their coalition partners or Puea Thai, it would seem that the Democeats (and partners) have totally misread the mood of the nation.

This result may not be so much an endorsement for Thaksin but a rejection of the status quo of Thai politics.

    Agree 100%

  2. If the exit polls prove correct then it goes to show that the Thais are sick of the 'fairy tale' existance they have been suckered into living in and they want change. The 'hi so elites' have had it too good for too long and a strong man is what they feel is needed to break away from the status quo. Taksin won't be around forever, and hopefully his sucessor will be less autocratic, but maybe he can start to lead Thailand in a new direction with a fairer more equal society, less 'top' heavy and more opportunities for all in this, to date, highly structured and totally unfair culture. I think we all agree that Thailand needs some fundamental changes, this was never going to happen under the old guard, they were only ever going to pay, at best, lip service to change, I hope that Thailand can now move forward as a more just society for all, free of old 'encumbarances'. :D

"but maybe he can start to lead Thailand in a new direction with a fairer more equal society"

Do you mean like the US? Or even a European country or Australia? Somewhere where everyone is equal.

Eventually, yes! I know it may seem a like a dream scenario but from small acorns trees do grow and it will take a long time but surely that is where all countries are headed for that is where progress is best made (whether or not you agree with 'progress'!), equal opportunities for all where even the brightest can reach for the stars.

  4. Thailand chooses to experience so much turmoil because of one man with an ego the size of Isaan.

During my 22 years in Toyland it never ceases to amaze me just how arrogant and egotistical the Thais are, especially the males, most likely something to do with the fact that 'little' people have to puff out their chests to prove their existance!!

  5. It's pretty obvious that they want us here if we can 'prove our worth' so to speak but don't want us here if we can't!! Also, maybe fewer people will bother to get a work permit and this will lead to extra 'revenue' to the usual suspects when finding Aliens working without said permit!!!

Thailand, still proving to be ultra Nationalistic, inward looking and backwards, just what one should expect from a 3rd world mentality with an old elite in control. :(

  6. Prince Charles went to Eton - which speaks volumes.

Prince Charles went to Gordounston, Princes William and Harry went to Eton as did Abhisit, Korn was head boy at Winchester College which, incidentally, has its own entrance examination considered to be very tough and definitely on par with Etons entrance exam.

  7. A few years ago there was a news item about a guy whose brother worked for NASA and he had developed a cream which apparently helped skin rejuvination to the extent that it might help a finger "grow back"!! Anyway, with that in mind, I was talking to my wife about a dear friend of ours who I had been to visit in hospital and who was in danger of possibly having his leg amputated at which point my Thai wife, in all honetsy, said "never mind darling, he can buy some of that cream and his leg will grow back"!!! I fell about laughing and she immediately realised her mistake/naivety and sarted laughing too!!!

  8. I would like to buy a nice solid teak table and chairs for my patio, something like a 6 seater with chairs, I haven't really seen any around, to be honest I have only really looked in the big stores and haven't seen much, anyone know where I could get something like that?

    Thanks

    Jimmy

There is an area in North Bangkok, near Morchit, the Soi is full of teak shops, lot of other shops buy from there, "trade area", Teak furnture of all sorts to your hearts consent, but in raw state, so you just need to laquer it, please see card attached from one of the shops in that Soi, although plenty more shops to look at, we bought a lot of Teak furniture from there, & buy the time we had it laquered it still came out to a lot cheaper than buying from one of the local furnture shops:

Excellent reply there dickie58, thats where furniture for my house was purchased, as well as the wood for the external and internal doors also the fitted kitchen and custom built wardrobes.

For those who cant read Thai the area referred to is called Bang Sue, everyone in the building game in Bkk knows where it is, well worth a visit.

Be careful though in this Soi (named Soi Pracha Nerumit) the prices have gone up an awful lot oerr thge years and it can be quite expensive, also make sure what you pay for is what you get and they use alot of teak plywood so if you want solid teak make sure it is clearly specified, some of the paint finishes can be substandard shopa round is my advice, I have been buying from this Soi for close to 20 years now and still change the shops I deal with!!!!

  9. I don't know who to feel more sorry for, the Thai police that they need foreign helpers to sort out problems in their country or the foreign volanteers who feel they must get involved with one of the worlds most corrupt police forces!!!!!

  10. I have a classic!! Some years ago I ordered a capaccino in a small but long running restaurant in south Pattaya. It was taking a while to come so, using the extensive mirrors that run down each side of the restaurant, I managed to take a peek at the girl behind the counter who was "making" my capuccino. Lo and behold it seems the machine was not working and so she was blowing through a straw into my coffee to try to make it look like capuccino!! When it arrived I did not have the heart to point this out to someone so obviously retarded so I merely paid, had a glass of water instead and left!!!! Amazing Thailand eh!!??

  11. The most beautiful restaurant at the moment is Baan Rimpa, down the coast towards Bang Saree on a clifftop overlooking the sea, the restaurant is on 6 levels going down the side of the cliff, all open, teak structure large grass area with bean bags to sit on and have drinks, a really spectacular setting, can book during the week but not at weekends. Food can be great, can be so so, service so so but the setting is out of this world you could be in the South of France. Opens 5pm not for lunch (maybe open for lunch at weekends.....not sure)

For wonderful seafood try Preechas in Ban Amphur (located just after the Ambassador) freat value food, consistently excellent quality and very reasonable price, situated on the beach next to the small fishing fleet.
