  6. Hi guys ...my 5 year licenses car & bike are due for renewal march...but i will not be going back to pattaya until june...question 1.. is that a problem for a renewal (without having to go thru the whole new application process ) and question 2 ....would i still have to get a 1 year non O visa...(i know you cannot renew with visa on arrival ) or is the new 6 month METV ok for driving license renewal......thanks for any info

  7. The policeman was wrong to try and take a 'bribe'. You were wrong to not have the correct license to be driving. So, get a license if you are here often, be it Thai or International, and lets stop giving them an excuse to stop so many foreigners.

With police like that, it doesn't matter if you have a license or not. They are after money. They will always find something, such as pointing out your "modified" bike, even though it is not. Common in Pattaya.

You could be right about that,..in Pattaya .. i thought i was legal with everything and happy to be stopped at checkpoint , had the helmet, ok ...checked the bike ...ok.. asked for license ., had thai license ,ok... checked my road tax ..ok. asked for passport i had copy ...ok ....i thought i was clear , but after thinking a minute he asked for my green owners book (log book )....got me.!....had to pay 300baht in police station..........so now i also carry copy of green book.. name and tax pages....cant wait to see what i have to carry with me next..!!

  8. If he made a will, properly witnessed, after marriage, then will is valid,. Surely he must have had an affidavit of freedom to marry from the embassy/consulate translated into Thai and verified at Laksi? As long as he has a Thai marriage certificate and the supporting documentation, preferably in Thai and English and was married at an Amphoe office he should need nothing else. If he is ever going to need pension funds or widow's funds from the UK he should make sure past employers/providers have notarised English translations of everything!

hi yes he got the freedom to marry from bangkok....i was not sure if the marriage had to be officialy stamped in bangkok, but now know that it did not ..and now apparently you dont even need to go to bangkok..but thanks for the advice about telling him to get everything translated..cheers

  9. He got married that day at the Naklua office and that is recognised in the UK.

He does not need to "register" it anywhere else and can no longer deposit the certificate it at the GRO overseas.

    https://www.gov.uk/government/news/marriage-certificate-registry-service-discontinued-for-overseas-brits

I would suggest he gets a "certified translation" of the marriage certificate, registration and his wife's birth certificate if she is a beneficiary of his will.

In my case my company pension scheme requires these before any widow's benefits can be paid, so I decided to get these done and approved by them whilst I am still alive.

His UK will is valid as he made it after he was married, but as the lawyer says in his forum, if he has Thai assets it my be worth his while making a will in Thailand to cover those.

PS. The law here in Scotland is different and marriage does not automatically revoke a will.

ok thanks ...good to know he does Not have to go to Bangkok now to register the marriage now....he does not have assets in thailand...mostly in uk bank accounts / shop / flat etc....so he was married after going to the marriage office in naklua.....Bangkok irrelevant now ...thanks

  10. hi...advice needed....my friend (who lives in Pattaya ) got married in Pattaya at the marriage office in naklua, then 2 days later went back to UK to sort some business out (without registering the marriage at the gov office in Bangkok ) and while in uk decided to make a Will .....when he goes back to Thailand he is going to register the marriage in Bangkok.....i told him i think ...this will then make the Will null and void when he is registered married in Bangkok ?.....i know that in uk when you get married all Wills become null and void.......so is he classed as being married officialy in Pattaya office ceremony or when he goes to Bangkok to register ?.....thanks for any advice

  11. In Pattaya you need to get a Residence Certificate from Immigration (one for each motorbike you buy, bank account you open, condo purchase). You'll need photocopies of your passport, 2 passport sized photos (both can be done at the shop beside the Immigration office). I also had to provide a copy of my lease agreement and a signed copy of my landlord's ID card.

When I bought a new bike I gave the Residence Certificate to the shop. They did (whatever they do) and I I think it was a couple days later I had the book (and a couple months later until I had the white license plate).

When I bought a used bike, I gave a Residence Certificate to my buddy at his bike shop. He took that, the receipt for the bike and the book and had it registered in my name (took a day or so I think).

You can buy a moto (and open a bank account) even if you just have a 30 day stamp, unless there is less than a week remaining on it (or close to that). My dad tried to open a bank account in '08 but only had a week left on his 30 day stamp so Immigration wouldn't give him a Residence Certificate. When he came back 6 weeks later with his O-A in hand, no problem. Got 1 Certificate to buy a bike, another to open a bank account.

i bought a nouvo from my friend 4 years ago but found that i cannot get it changed into my name unless both me and my friend go to the registration office together to sign it over..but he returned to uk never to return...anyone know how i can get it in my name? i pay the road tax and insurance every year, but cannot change the name ...annoying

  12. hi ..does anyone know if they have started piling / building on the land next to View Talay 6 second road Pattaya.......i am in uk and have Condo there and not sure if my friend there is winding me up...if they are building , anyone know how high ?....thanks for any info...

  13. hi thanks for the info crossy much appreciated, just a small point would the 200 watt curling tongs heat up to the same power as if they were in the uk ? and would it be ok to cut off the three pin uk plugs and fit thai 2 pin plugs or am i better just buying 3 pin adapters thanks again michelle x

You shouldn't notice any difference in operation of your tongs :D

If you're going to be here permanently then do replace the plugs (the fewer adaptors you use the better) but for a short stay the WonPro adaptors (from HomePro) are pretty good.

    :)

many thanks for your help . you are very kind..michelle x

  14. sorry to hijack this informative topic, but could someone tell me if its ok for me to bring from uk .smaller electric items like..hairdryer, curling tongs, portable cd radio , iron.. etc and plug the 3 pin uk plug ...into a thai 2 pin adapter and then into the thai 2 pin wall sockets......thanks for any advice ..michelle

    Hi Michelle

Of the above only the iron would be a problem. The other appliances will likely be Class-2 (double insulated) and only require 2 wires (no ground needed).

Irons usually require a ground to be totally safe. It will of course work, but mixing water (steam iron) and electricity without proper grounding is a risk. You could get one of the PowerBreaker portable RCDs and plug the iron into that before plugging into the outlet, not ideal but will add a significant margin of safety. NOTE A travel iron should be double insulated so no need to worry :)

    One of these:-

  15. Well ^^^ so long as you use SMALLER MCBs than those noted then you will have no issues, and your installation will approach UK safety levels. That said, the ratings quoted have been used in Australia for many years and the Thai regs are based upon the same roots as the Aussie.

The UK is almost unique in having fused plugs and over-rated (32A) outlet circuits. There is some interesting history behind the ring-main and fused plugs, amazingly none of which is involved with safety :D

A WORD OF WARNING to those who want to use the 'universal' outlets. Thai outlets have live on the LEFT if you look at them with the ground at the top, a UK outlet has live on the RIGHT. This means that inserting a UK plug into a universal outlet will put the fuse in the neutral, not really a good situation.

If you really want to mirror UK you should use proper BS 1363 outlets (obtainable in Malaysia). Remember though, that BS 1363 outlets are not explicitly permitted by the regs and that the inspector may well fail a new installation that uses them :)
