  1. The SEA file is awesome. Only problem is that there are no transcripts for those of us who are pretty bad at reading Thai.

So those anyone know of a website/program that can write transcripts from thai text?

    Thanks.

Hi, these are great resources, thanks everyone.

I did not see a consolidated list so I put one together, copying and pasting all the SEA vocab into a spreadsheet. I find it more useful that way as I am more interested in learning vocab by its relevance (ie how commonly it is used) than its genre.

There's also all sorts of interesting ways you can analyse the data once its in a spreadsheet...

I separated out some of the more useful categories such as months, household vocab, measurement vocab, etc into separate tabs although they all also appear in the main list in the tab named "SEA Vocab".

I removed any duplicates (there were 122 words which were repeated across different categories) leaving a vocab list of 3,123 words.

I would have liked to include the category of each word but when I realised I would have to add it in manually, I quickly dropped that idea :)

    Enjoy!

  2. Hi,

Our children (age 2 and 5) are getting bored at our hotel. The swimming pool was fun for some time, but now they really miss some other children to play with.

So can anyone recommend a family-friendly hotel with a good chance of other children (there is absolutely no other children at the hotel where we are currently staying)

Any ideas? It would be great if the hotel is in the Phrom Pong/Thong Lo area or close to that area.

    Thanks.

  3. Hi,

I'm trying to avoid carbohydrates as much as possible. Amongst other things, I don't eat rice, pasta and potatoes.

Any ideas for what I should eat while I'm in Bangkok?

(I usually buy street food in double portions without rice, but I would love to hear more ideas)

    Thanks.

  4. Hi,

Here I am again, visiting the family in law in the sticks. It's only been a few days and I'm already bored to death, tired of people who have never been outside the village and conversations limited to what we are going to eat.

So any ideas on making visits to the sticks more exciting - or how to avoid them/limit them as much as possible?

    Thanks.

  5. imo apply for a 60 day tourist visa with double entry.

Then you just pop over to Malaysia around the middle of your stay in Thailand for an extra 60 days. So essentially you've got upto 120 days worth of visas and don't have to piss around at the immigration office. Particularly as you'll be in Thailand for approximately 106-107 days (assuming exactly 3 1/2 months)

Since a visa extension at an immigration office + 14 days for crossing to Malaysia & back would only give you 104 days, so you'd need to be pretty precise about when you extend your visa + when you goto Malaysia and even then you'd likely end up with a few days overstay (only 500 bhat a day though so not necessarily biggie).

(Although of course if you're flying from Malaysia back to Thailand, then a single entry + 30 day extension is perfectly viable. But imo a double entry is still easier as saves you a trip to the immigration office)

A double entry is exactly what we have. Sorry for not making that clear before.

Is it possible to get the extra 60 days by going to the immigration office, so we don't need to cross the border to Malaysia?

  6. Hi, We are in Thailand for 3,5 months. Our visa is 2 month tourist, so we need to renew it once to stay legally in Thailand for all 3,5 months. But how do we renew it as easily as possible? Our plan is to cross the border to Malaysia and back again, but can we also renew it at the immigration office in Bangkok or similar places? I'm Danish, age 35 + 2 small children (Danish too). My wife is Thai. Thanks.

  7. Thanks, but the pdf files doesn't have Thai script (I hate transcriptions, think it's a major mistake not to learn to read/write Thai from the beginning)

thailanguagewiki.com has Thai script, English, and sound only - no transliteration - using the FSI materials, we spent months typing the Thai script.

I gave the url to the original FSI materials for those who do use/need transliteration. Take your pick.

    Awesome! Didn't see that one.

Thanks a lot. Just what I was looking for.

  8. Hi,Looks like we will stay in the area around On Nut BTS station for some time.Does anyone know of any sports activities we can do while we are there? (fitness, martial arts, running, tennis, etc.)It doesn't have to be in English. A Thai place will be fine. Thanks a lot.

  9. Hi,

We are moving to Bangkok for 4 months with our 2 children (2 and 4 years old).

Any recommendations on a good kindergarten in Sukumvit area - or Sathorn/Silom.

Our children speak Thai, but it would be excellent if the kindergarten is bilingual (and doesn't cost a million baht a month per child).

    Thanks.

  10. Hi,

My wife is Thai. She speaks good English, but her grammar + reading/writing could use some work.

We have therefore decided to move to Bangkok for a few months, so she can attend an English language school full time.

Any recommendations on English language schools in central Bangkok?

    Thanks,

    Ninjat

  11. Hi,

Quite a few Thai people seems to have 2 big problems with English grammar:

    1) They doesn't seem to understand the difference between specific and non-specific words

    2) They keep mixing up past and present tense

What can one do to make them understand these two things?

Is there a website that explains it all in Thai? (I have tried explaining it in English, but it doesn't sink in. That's why I think it might help to read an explanation in their own language).

    Thanks,

    Ninjat

  12. My wife have thought about hinting that we might not be interested in have guests all the time, but she is very afraid of insulting someone or making someone angry/sad.

Have anyone tried hinting like this? How did you do it - and how did it go?
