This problem is not restricted to Thai kids. It is a problem across the globe.
What the article is saying, and I agree, is that it is not a problem. This is just the way language is. It evolves and changes and people experiment with it. And people use different types of language in different situations.

I quite like Sarakhadi Magazine. Tend to be able to read it without too much trouble and find it quite interesting. Is just a monthly but I never end up reading the whole thing. When in bookshops it tend to pick up factural stuff (the language is easier to read than literature). There are a number of things with short little chapters about a variety of things. I find that better as then my concentration doesn't waver. Although I always end up buying far more books than I ever actually get round to reading.

So Sombat Boonngarmanong tieing some red ribbons to the Rajaprasong intersection sign is destroying the country? Surely this sort of protest should be applauded. He was wrongfully arrested for it once and the courts rightly let him go.

This website is very useful (http://michaelbluejay.com/electricity/cooling.html)
Shows how fans do more than just blow hot air around. The hottest air is usually the air around you as your body heat heats it up. A fan blows that hot air away from you and allows your body to cool faster. Also shows different energy use (e.g. a small air-con. is equivalent to about 12 ceiling fans).
Lots of other hints and tips to.

check out the southeast asia movie theatre project blog here (http://seatheater.blogspot.com/) and for Thai films (most of the stuff is more modern but there are some reviews of classic Thai films) at wise kwai's thai film blog (http://thaifilmjournal.blogspot.com/)
I recommend:
Insii daeng (that is about to be remade) - with famous classic actor Mit Chaibancha
Muu Purn (With actor surapong chartrii)
Salaween - also Surapong
Sia Die 2 - also with Surapong
and others I can't think of right now.
Most of the bigger DVD shops have a section with classic Thai films. A lot of rubbish in there but some good ones.

One of the ways to spot a con is ask to see their work-permit. Very often the dodgy ones don't have work permits.

Chumphon has some beautiful and virtually deserted beaches. The main ones that are advertised are not great but if you have your own transport and can explore then you can find some gems.

I get most of my news from Bangkok Pundit and Prachatai. Asia times online and asia sentinel are also very good. And notthenation.com is more often more real than the real version even though it is meant to be fake news.

I have a friend in London who does private Thai classes. He is half Thai half American and he has plenty of experience teaching. Don't know what he charges but if your interested then PM me.

Just what Bangkok needs, even more cars!

My guess is that the sort of people in Thailand who can afford to take trips to places like the UK are generally the very wealthy and therefore have more disposable income. In Economics terminology is known as price discrimination and airlines are the experts at this. Price discrimination is charging each customer depending on their ability/willingness to pay therefore they reason that most of the people who live in Thailand who are going to travel abroad to places like the UK are rich and therefore will be willing to pay these higher fees.
Although i have just got a degree in Economics so that means that I am probably totally wrong.

According to a post by Bangkok Pundit (http://bangkokpundit.blogspot.com/2009/05/state-of-emergency-and-liability.html)
Tak Bai happened Oct 2004
Emergency decree which supposedly has got these soldiers off the hook wasn't put into force until July 2005
What is going on here?
Oh and make sure that you don't criticise this ruling as criticising court rulings is against the law. Because the courts are always right.

I think that while for pronunciation you would probably want a native Thai speaker to help you but then if you are living in Thailand anyway then that doesn't really matter so much.
I think that a foreigner who has learned Thai may be a lot better at explaining it as they look at the language from the same point of view as they student and therefore will be able to understand what were the difficult points to understand when they learned the language and would know exactly how to explain things to make it perfectly clear.
Just like in a Thai school if the students are learning English and they have both a Thai teacher and a native English speaking teacher the native speaker will teacher speaking while the Thai teacher will usually focus on grammar.

if all the walls are facing south then the house is at the north pole.

I know Plai Pirom! He is my friends cousin. He is their specialist on toxins. Very nice guy and knows his stuff.
I always feel bad when i see people fishing in Chao praya and various canals. If they are eating those fish then i dread to think the sort of other toxins they are ingesting.

slightly off topic but as Khun chang Khun Paen has been mentioned a few times i would mention that currently Pasuk Pongpaichit and Christ Baker are currently in the process of translating it into English. Also they have been updating the wikipedia page on it so you know if you are getting info from wikipedia about the book then it is coming from an authorative source.

You are at the south pole and the bear is white.

From the opinion piece by Veera in Bangkok Post we get to see what sort of society the PAD is looking to as a model for a future Thailand.
<h3 class="UIIntentionalStory_Message">"Phipob Thongchai, said earlier that under “new politics” there would be radical land reform so that every Thai citizen would own a piece of land and be able to make a living. He cited the case of North Korea, saying that although the country is poor and its people are starving, the North Koreans can pride themselves in owning a small piece of land. "</h3>
I am not against land reform just think they could have picked better countries to copy. But then maybe they think of north korea as a model society.
oh and this is a good post by Bangkok pundit:
"
During the protests against Thaksin, Sondhi L said:
"Slap my face with your shoes if one day I take any political position," Sondhi once said.BP: Given a party has basically been set up Sondhi L and the other PAD leaders have reversed their positions so who will be the first to line up to slap Sondhi L's face?"
I am looking forward to the shoe slapping!

i will second an essential thai grammer by david smyth. I think is done in a very simple and easy to learn way.
It will give you all the main basics a beginner would need.
If you are further than the basics then i also second Thai reference grammar by Higbie and Thinsan as a follow on as is more advanced than the david smyth book.
don't know about any other books. they are just the ones i have come across.

Well this is not according to any certain method of transliteration just how i would write it.
1. Barn Sa Gam school, Chiang Yai district, Nakhon Si Thamarat Province.
2. Tanayao dii Suksa school, Chiang Yai district, Nakhon Si Thamarat Province. (or is it just Tanyao without an extra 'a' vowel between the 'n' and 'y' am not 100% certain)
3. Park Panang Panichayagarn, Park Panang district, Nakhon Si Thamarat Province.
4. Witayalai Panichayagarn, Bang Na (area or district not sure how you translate เขต exactly), Bangkok.
hope that is useful and that someone can correct any errors of mine or clear up areas that i was unsure of.

Agreed. Although I don't mind earning a bit less if i get a better working environment to teach in. I taught in a secondary school before and can't be bothered to spend most of my time getting kids to behave. I want to teach not be a child minder. I have studied in a Thai uni and I know students there don't listen all the time either but is a lot better than in a high school.

What is SEA university? Googled it and couldn't find anything. I am not currently in Thailand. Will be arriving mid June and am looking for work at universities. If I PM you my CV would you be able to pass it on?

Yeah i have a skype phone here in England and was wondering if the skype would still work in Thailand. My GF said that there was a skype shop that sells skype phones in a shopping mall in Bangkok. Can't remember which one she said but was a major shopping mall in Siam area. Just did a google search but can't find anything specific.
Work Permit

No. You would need a work permit for that too. Your work permit covers you for working only at the place and for the employer as stated in the work permit.
