  1. It's not too difficult to make a compact domestic waste water treatment system. I used to work for a company that made these things (Biocycle). If you follow their principle, you will have water that can be used anywhere around the house...except for drinking.

Yeah, thanks for that. They don't give their secret away though do they?!

  2. One of ya is saying chiang mai is the biggest city in thailand, one of you is saying korat is the biggest city in thailand.I( just read A website that udonthani had the 2nd largest .population in thailand.

No...Nonthaburi is according to Wiki. Korat is the the 4th. Chang Mai 3rd. Still nothing to do there for X-pats unless you want isolation. You can go to the mall and swim for a few baht if that's your thing. has a bowling alley, lots of stores, etc. Thats it! Khao Yai is a nice place to visit. Lived there once and would go back but nothing else to do there.

Guys, No-one is suggesting that either city is largest in Thailand. That's quite obviously Bangkok.

Some say Korat is THE largest in terms of area.

  4. I can't find any threads about growing marigolds here. Nor in Farming!

Are any members growing marigolds on a decent scale?

My Mrs says there's aprofit to be made here as 1000's are sold in the markets as merit offerings/decoration etc.

It's not so much that I want to make money, though that's always bonus beer money, but would be a little hobby for someone with spare land and time.

Obviously the ground would need a deal of prep, a shade house to be erected etc.

Any advice please, or some alternatives to marigold?

  5. Not so much the cost of water, but because I feel that the amount of domestic waste water my household produces is a shame to just waste, I intend to save and re-use as much of our waste water as possible.

It will be a simple system, merely chanelling the waste pipes from, shower, wash basin etc into a small tank then pumping onto our garden as required.

We live outside of Korat and have very dry, hard soil here. We have a garden of about half rai, planted with trees and veg. No grass!

I'm seeking advice on how far to go with saving water. Is it feasible to re-use water from washing machine, kitchen sink etc. Do I need to avoid the plants when pumping soapy water.

Anyone have any simple filtering ideas?

    All helpful comments appreciated!

  6. My wife and I have inherited about 10 rai of dry land between Korat and Phimai. We have started to plant Euca but I've put the plan on hold as I'm not sure of a viable future for the Euca pulp.

I need to further study the requirements of Kenaf but it may do well here.

Do you want to discus supplying us with seeds in return for crop as suggested?

  7. Part of the problem is the fruit containing the seed ripen at different times.

I did a local search here in Chiang Rai. I found a nice woman at the Ag Dept who gave a bunch of seed free! I planted about 1/2, so still have some seed left (about 200) though they probably don't still have a viable germination ratio. I'll send some seed for free to whomever requests (within Thailand).

The ones that sprouted, 4 months ago, are up to 6 ft tall. Their leaves look quite like grape leaves. I'm told they're a small tree, and can handle drought. Also, I don't think the diesel motor has to be modified, though it works best for large simple engines, and not as well for car motors, though it could probably work ok if mixed.

I saw a brochure which showed the seed being pressed for oil in a simple hand cranked press - something a handy person could make in his garage in an afternoon.

With seed planted trees, every tree is unique. It's possible you or I could get lucky and find we have a tree with exceptional qualities such as profuse concurrent production. That's similar to what Luther Burbank did with plums and other fruits. Who knows, maybe you could name and sell your own special type of jatropha.

Same could happen with hemp (and other plants), except Thai gov't won't allow their farmers to join the world community that is growing hemp and enjoying its benefits. The reason? Because Thailand is too tightly tied to US laws on such things, therefore it has no capacity for independent thought in that regard. Sorry to bash the Thais on this tangent, but hemp is one of my special interests, and it burns my biscuit that Thailand is behind the 8 ball on it.

  8. I'm in the first year of a smallish Eucalyptus project (about 12 rai) in mostly very dry Korat land.

Planting 2 metres apart as advised seems an awful waste of space. I don't intend to drive a tractor through for at least 3 years.

Does anyone grow a compimentary crop or have any advice on this?

I'm looking into Jatropha. Know of this as an oil producing nut?

    Many thanks.

  9. Is it possible for anyone to get a non imm o visa in Asia?

    If so where?

    Or is Australia advised?

It depends upon what basis you are able get it upon.

Marriage, to visit a child and over 50 are possible.

Other than that it is Australia for you.

I'm under 50 yoa and not married in law but I do have a child with my Thai 'wife'.

I'm currently here on a 2 month extension to 'visit my son'.

Some say I can get a non imm o in Penang, others say cannot.

  10. I know next to nothing about farming save growing my own vegetables but would you be so kind as to explain why you bought 17 rai of land without any clear indication of what you were going to do with it ?

If not Thai, then in your partner's name ?

Not being critical, just interested to see why ?

    It was CHEAP!
