  1. My 40 year old single Thai friend is considering buying private health care insurance since her 41 year old cousin got seriously ill.

We were researching Bupa here on Thaivisa but it seems to get mixed reviews (sometimes they don't pay and sometimes they do).

Any thoughts or ideas on what good choices might be? Or what questions she should be asking? Who to ask?

I think she has been in the hospital only once (for some kind of kidney condition that resolved through medicine).

    thanks,

  3. The problem with the Icafe is they serve the internet to you and can have loggers or any number of means. I avoid the use of wireless connection but my own which is secure. Your true air card out of the box state that it is win and mac but I am posting from one like that right now that I use in boout th linux and windows. Most if they don't work in linux automaticly can work with a twik, but you can be secure with your windows via your own air card for banking etc it is using https and don't keep any passwords on the PC. It is your browser that is likey to give you up online as far as things like that i.e. the resent java expolit. If you just want to be private you can use a vpn or tor.

How can I find out how to get my air card working with Linux? (I think this is the best way for me).

  4. Is it secure to use my own laptop with a Live Linux CD at an Internet cafe (going through a cable to my computer, not wireless)?

My future apartment will have only public wifi and I don't think that is secure.

I thought I might use my True air card, but they tell me it does not support Linux.

Are there any other possibilities with a Live Linux CD?

(I wanted to use a Live Linux CD because I thought it would have a lower chance of containing malware. Is that correct?)

I believe Dr. Mason has a high level of integrity. I visited eight different orthopedic surgeons in regards to a knee problem. All of them recommended surgery. Dr. Mason refused to operate until he saw what kind of results I could get from strengthening my atrophied leg muscles. He felt that the condition was mostly caused by muscle weakness.

Although Dr Mason did not initially mention that my problem could be tendonitis, he agreed this could be part of the problem after it was diagnosed by the physical therapist.

(In the end, I waited to see two world famous specialists in the US before making the surgery decision. Both of them gave me a 90% chance of recovery with physical therapy for strengthening my leg muscles as Dr. Mason insisted. They also refused to operate until I strengthened my leg muscles.)

It was very difficult for me to figure out how to strengthen my leg muscles without inflaming the tendon and Dr. Mason did not address this (this could have been a communication issue). In the end, I went for physical therapy in the US. It seems to have helped, but it is too early to know if this is going to work.

I will definitely use Dr. Mason again in case of any future orthopedic problems.

  6. Greetings,

I am looking for a good surgeon to do a keyhole operation to smooth out ragged cartilage in my knee. Are there any recommendations for doctors in Bangkok? My primary concern is getting the best possible results (with the least medical risk) since my knee condition is greatly affecting my mobility and my life.

How do I determine the competence of the anethstesiologist for the operation? I think this must be the most dangerous part of the operation. What are the statistics in Thailand for death or brain damage as a result of such mistakes.

    Thanks,

  7. I am trying to find out how to get information about getting satellite tv in a condo in Bangkok.

Where can I get information about this? Is there a dealer in Bangkok that can help me?

How difficult is it to set up?

How big a dish is needed?

    How much does it cost?

    Many thanks,

  8. Greetings,

I am trying to ship personal items back to the US by boat. During a call to US customs, they advised me to make sure I research the shipping company since there can be problems.

Can you share experiences and give any advice about how to do this?

What companies can do this reliably?

At the moment, I have the names of two shipping companies. One is called Transpologistics. I don't know anything about them, but so far they do not seem very responsive to my requests for information, and they do not do what they say they will do. Any opinion about this company?

A local UPS store recommended another company called EXCO World Wide, but I don't know anything about them either.

    Thanks,

  9. Not sure why you are saying wireless then USB (which is a wired connection). You can look here for full Internet ready webcams.

    http://www.shop4thai.com/en/category/?cat=138

    Thank you for your help.

Yes, I apologize for the confusion. I was hoping to find a webcam that would have two parts: one part with a wireless transceiver that would plug into the USB port, and one part that had a wireless transceiver connected to the webcam itself. The webcam transceiver would communicate with the transceiver connected to the USB port.

  10. How do you determine that 10 mil. people have high blood pressure and only 1/3 know it? Did not the doctors tell the other 6 plus mil ? This seems to be a reoccuring statement when groups, countries, people, etc are trying to raise money or to get grants, aid etc. I hope I am mistaken in this concept and some one can point out what I am missing.

The percentage of people who are not aware of their condition can be determined to a certain confidence level using sampling. By examining a small but broad spectrum of the population, you can estimate to a certain accuracy level, the characteristics of the whole population. You have to estimate the quality of the sampling to determine the error bounds on the accuracy of the estimate.

The results of a broad sampling will represent the results of the whole group to within a certain accuracy. Larger samples have greater accuracy levels, but the size of the sample required to achieve a given accuracy level depends on the diversity of the population. More diverse populations require more samples to achieve a given accuracy level.

  11. I was surprised to learn that I attended MIT at the same time as HRH. Ubolratana Manidol. I probably never met her though. She graduated in mathematics and I graduated in electrical engineering so we were in different departments. There were 4,000 undergraduates at the time. She was a senior when I was a freshman.

I was also surprised to learn that Mr. Phra Bisal Sukhumvit also attended MIT. He graduated in 1923 so I didn't know him because I hadn't been born yet. He ran the department of transportation in Thailand when Sukhumvit Road was being completed and the road was named after him
